    OCTOBER 2014

@@LisaCO On the B1, just wondering how much B1 did you take before your 3 month blood test ?I am sure your multi Vitamin had some? How did you take your vitamin. Once or twice per day? I know some people take 2 together, etc. I am taking an informal tab on how we all do as a group. Mini research!!!!!
  2. Hi everyone. TMI nausea warning at 10 weeks post Bypass. Anyone suffer from nausea after eating? This just started for me and I throw up slime, not actual food. It's not foam but a clear or with a tinge of color, thick stuff. The nausea sometimes lasts for for hours as well as the vomiting. Very early on I did get a little nausea because I thought I could eat 1/2 cup but could only actually eat 1/4 cup. An extra bite was too much. This is different. This is full blown nausea, I am going to throw up in the middle of the room if I don't run to the bathroom. In fact, I lost it in the car. Not sure what to do because it happens with all sorts of foods I could eat before. Anyone knows what this is? What to do? Experienced it? Help!

    10 weeks post NAUSEA

@@Carol1965 Fortunately, I don't have an issue with liquids. I get 48oz per day. My tummy does not like cold Water. It makes me burp but warm herbal tea is great. The sad part is my nausea happens one day and then not again. The vomiting comes out of nowhere but then the next day I'm fine. Did you ever vomited?
  4. I called my insurance. The 1 800 number on the back of the card and they told me the entire requirements and e-mailed me the portion of the benefit explanation guide. For me I was about 40 BMI but if I was below 35 BMI it was not covered. The Nutrition appointments ARE NOT for weight loss. The requirement is to educate you on what you are about to go through. In some ways it is also a way to put some time in your decision making process. Insurance companies do not want patients to rush into such surgery. Please do not attempt to lose weight or they are not going to cover the surgery and you will have to start the process all over.
  5. I have this sometimes but it's always related to what I ate. It feels like my food has made it down the track and when it gets to intestines it doesn't agree with me. I think it maybe because we have not digested it in the stomach completely. I think it is a form of dumping but I am not sure. For me it's with higher fat content. I have not figured out how to prevent it but at least I can tell you I do have it sometimes. I usually lay down for a while to settle my lower tummy. The good news is, it goes away after a while.

    OCTOBER 2014

Hi everyone, Thank you for your kind words. I am not usually a downer but this has been hard lately. It feels like I was going so well and then I hit the brick wall. I am planning on calling my RA tomorrow. Decided not to call today because on Mondays they get so many calls and I am sure there were some urgent matters after a New Year's weekend. But it sounds like this slime thing is common. For a while I think my issue was eating too much, like a bite over 1/4 cup. I don't do that anymore. I rather have two Snacks then go down that road but this is way more severe. I have had 5 pregnancies and not once did I throw up in the car. Well, can't say that anymore! I did have a good day today but I ate very little. My weight has been a little slow to go down because of my food issues, no doubt. Breakfast: Hummus Lunch: 1/2 of a Quest Bar - gave me nausea I had a cup of camomile tea in the morning and another of decaf tea this afternoon. I have to keep my fluids up or my constipation is impossible to live with. I am about to have a yogurt and for dinner, I was planning Beans and veggies but I am not sure I can handle it. I may do something super safe like baby oatmeal. I also have lost my energy bounce. I was doing so well. Back to nap mid-day and frequent couch breaks. This too shall past.

I have tried to limit eating out because I am not sure what is in the food such as hidden fat and sugar. But while on vacation, I had to. I had pork takitos and guacamole without a problem but next meal had grilled chicken and caramelized onions and lost my Cookies. I even made sure not to eat any browned bits. Only the inside of the chicken that was moist. I did eat one bite of the onions. Today I am going to try to cook red Beans from scratch. I'll empty the bag of beans in a bowl and cover them with boiling Water. I was told, if I do this I will be able to remove the skins a few hours later. Then after a 1/2 day of soaking or so, I will boil them and freeze in ziplock portions. Given the size of my meals. This bag will last until 2020. I find the skins too thick and annoying. I have an issue with making such small meals all the time and as I get busy I notice I am not eating as well. I tend to grab foods that are not as high in Protein. Besides there is only so much cheese, hummus and yogurt I can handle.

@@misstvb How strange is that? It's like all is well then WAM sick like a dog. I can't figure it out. Maybe I'm eating too fast or something really is not okay with how, what I am eating because this is horrible. I'm not working right now but if I was, I would have not been able to cope. Thank you for telling me this happens with you too because I was getting so discouraged. The first few times I thought it was because my stomach couldn't handle what I was eating (it may still be the case) but now I wonder if this is the way it's always going to be. I think we need some old timers or at least some people further down the line.

    OCTOBER 2014

Happy Birthday. So cute you both share the same b-day. I feel much better but while on vacation that first day was not the best and I actually threw up in the car. Thank goodness I had a bag because it came so sudden there was no time to stop. Today I have been fine but all my food was mushy. Yogurt is my friend. The odd thing is I throw up just slime. No food at all (maybe a tiny bit). Sorry for the TMI. Does anyone have this? It's like the food won't come up.

    OCTOBER 2014

It finally happened. I know it was a matter of time. A, not if but a when? I had a moment that screamed, WHAT HAVE I DONE? But I'm over it now. New years eve. Sick as a dog. Had steak at 7:00 PM. But mine was ground and I made it into a patty. I was thinking it would be easier to digest. There was also a bit of salad with caramelized onions. This is the 3rd time I have had a reaction to onions. I am done with onions for quite a while. Steak, I will try again but I will have to take only 1 or 2 bites. It was horrible. I was sick for 4 hours straight. Could not stop throwing up no matter what I did. At one point I chewed a TUMS in desperation and dry heaved for an hour. OMG. I am not sure why it was so bad but the desperation was beyond belief. I have not had severe nausea for that long in my entire life. I was a very nauseated pregnant woman but this was non-stop. My tummy hurt so badly too. Our family went on a trip New Years day. We left at 7:00 AM and just returned. I didn't have the heart to cancel but I have been shell shocked ever since.

@@smiley922 Now wasn't that easy! Isn't it amazing how diabetes was "the cure." For me was sleep Apnea and the CPAP machine. I told my sleep doctor her CPAP machine cured me and how grateful I was it was such an uncomfortable annoying machine. She thought it was funny!

    Sooooo tired!

I see. I think most likely you were just tired. Your body went through a lot. I was pretty tired too but every day you will get stronger. Sleeping is not as restful too. I think your body knows you went through a lot because the fear or flight instinct kicks in. It's like you are ready to wake up at a second's notice because the lions are about to eat you, lol. At 8 weeks I am better then new. Hang in there. Your turn will come.

    No caffeine ever?

I was told by my Nutritionist at week 8 that I could have coffee if I so desired. There is no medical reason not to. All I have to keep in mind is: Do I tolerate it? I'm I using common sense is how I drink it? Obviously, I don't want to be drinking too much. It can be absorbed too quickly and give you jitters. A smaller cup is all I need now. I can use my pretty mugs that before where way too small.
  16. I had 6 tiny incisions and they bothered me getting up from bed. It was a pulling soreness kind of thing. A single larger incision is likely to hurt a bit more, especially once the powerful meds wear off. I am only saying this because I had a C-section with my 3rd baby. A little discomfort is to me expected but severe pain is not normal. In my opinion, anything extreme should be called in to the doctor. Focus on telling them exactly what your symptoms are. Be as to the point as you can. Rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10 and make sure they take you seriously. Where you advised to take pain medication? Good luck!

    Sooooo tired!

How long ago did you have WLS? The first 2 weeks I was napping twice per day and I did rest a lot. The next 2 weeks I was going to bed at 7:00 PM and still napping most days in the afternoon. The next 4 weeks I napped occasionally and some days I went to bed early but less and less. At times I felt like a toddler who wears himself out from so much playing. Exhaustion came up all of a sudden. At 8 weeks I am completely recovered. You have to pace yourself. It's kind of learning not to do anymore then you have to but doing a little more everyday. Take lots of breaks. Even sitting down for a few minutes here and there helps. Of course, at work it will be a little more challenging but please understand you had major surgery and nobody expects you to bounce back like a rubber band. The good news is at this point I feel way better then then I did before surgery. There is hope!

    One step closer!

You will be amazed at the difference. I wouldn't have believed you if you told me this would be the result after surgery. The only people I have read that are not feeling fantastic are those with nutrient deficiencies or complications (minority). Don't forget your pills as per doctor's plan. Drink your fluids and follow your plan and the rest is nature taking it's course. It is a tool and I look at it as: Before surgery: hammering a nail without a hammer After surgery: having a hammer. You still need to know how to hammer the nail (sometimes you will hit your finger) but now you have something that will work for you as before all you had was your bare hands. Happy New Year.

    OCTOBER 2014

To those of you who are in a or have had a recent stall, my heart goes to you because it is mentally devastating. I have been reading about them. It looks like after a period of weight loss our bodies are trying to hold on to the "dear fat" by resetting our metabolism. It's a starvation mode. Some of the things I read (not personally tested) are: An these can be just for a couple days or for a short while. It's intended as a burst. 1. Increase Water intake 2. Increase exercise 3. Increase Protein intake (but I have also read increase food intake, IDK) The goal is to shake the system and reset the fat burn rate. Turns out our body losses fat as water and air (pee and breath). This is why the water intake is so crucial to flush and it may explain why body odor (BO) is up. With exercise it's the same thing. We are reseting the burn rate. I am not as sure about the science behind the protein but I think it is also because muscle burns more fat and increasing protein while exercising will promote weight loss. The last thing is to avoid snacking (me, a little guilty) because calories do add up. Can't wait for the holiday season to be gone so I can focus. It's hard not to take a tiny bite here and there when it's staring at you. We have lots of sweets, Cookies and chocolates on our dining room table displayed through the holidays. We have always done this and the kids love it. We plan what is worthy of the holiday table for weeks. I only do it from Christmas Eve through New Year's but that's a whole week of all our favorite sweets staring at us. It's a family tradition and when friends or family drop by there is always something to offer. If anyone knows of other stall busting ideas please share.

    One step closer!

@@laurenella82 Very soon. I would say 6 weeks at the most for GW and your doctor may even be less. Right around the corner and a wonderful new year's present to yourself. I'm 9 weeks post and have lost 51 lbs. I cannot tell you how good I feel. Never mind the weight loss and how I look, how I feel is the real miracle. I walked around for 3 hours last night at the Wash. DC Zoo to see the lights and I was running around like a little kid. A year ago. I would have to take breaks and go slow up that hill. Even the 45 minute line to get flashing lights cotton candy was a breeze. Not once did I require a break.

stall at 2 weeks out?! help!

I have had 3 stalls so far and I am 9 weeks post. My first on week two, the second on week 5 and the third on week 7 and 1/2. This last one was 9 days long. It about killed me. I was going insane because a couple days I actually gained weight. Hello, how is that even possible with the tiny meals I eat. No idea why they happen my NUT says not to pay attention to them, it's temporary. If you are doing what you are supposed to do you will lose weight. Little consolation when you are in the middle of one but rest assured, you will not be the only human being in the planet for which WLS does not work. Believe me, I thought I was. After the 9 day stall which ended yesterday I lost 1 pound in 2 days. Not bad. Good luck!
  22. I crossed my legs today. They still don't stay there for too long but I couldn't do that before for even a second. But best of all, the person I see in the mirror has hope for the future.

    Regret?

9 weeks and no regrets. In fact, if I start talking about my surgery I'm going to start crying of joy. I was worried sick before surgery but all my fears were just that. It wasn't as hard as I thought, not even close. The first few days were challenging because drinking enough liquids was hard and I was afraid of getting dehydrated. Learning how to eat also took a few weeks because I am a slow learner and did not want to eat as slow as I'm supposed to. Learning that my stomach can only fit 1/4 cup of food also was a hard concept for me. I tried to have an extra bite and hello nausea. I also, learned that lion sized hunger is not there anymore. It's gentle and well behaved now. This makes everything possible. I don't feel deprived because I can eat anything. Even sweets. It's amazing how satisfying a single bite can be. I just don't have food urges controlling my life. I used to see people eat 1/2 a slice of dessert and wonder how they could leave 1/2 on their plate. It's exactly how I feel now. It is liberating not to be thinking of food all the time. But the most amazing thing of all is how fantastic I feel. The weight coming off is nothing in comparison to how much energy I have. I had no idea this was going to be even better then expected. I swear I feel better then I have felt in 10 years and I am smarter, more focused then I could imagine. My cranky self is gone. I think being overweight was exhausting me to the point that life was getting unbearable. I was tired, sad, and miserable all the time. It's all gone. I have lost 51 lbs with 69 to go to reach goal. If I didn't lose another pound I would still say my surgery has been a success. I didn't know I was going to feel physically amazing. I was expecting that the weight loss would be a mental boost but what I am talking about is physical and real. It's almost like when you have a baby and everyone is happy for you but nobody can explain to you how much you love your child. Nobody can tell you how wonderful that is. I tell you with my surgery it's the same. I wish I could explain how wonderful it is because if I could, everyone with a BMI of 35 and above would be running to the hospital for WLS.
  24. I am not a doctor but that does sounds unusual. Could it be an ulcer? Watch out for tar colored stool in case it bleeds. But it could also be acid. My RA may be placing me on double dose of Protonix (omoprozole) if my burping doesn't settle down. About a year ago, I did take one in the morning and one in the evening for about a month for acid reflux. This was before surgery and it helped a lot. I say this because it may be an option for you. Worth asking your doctor. Could it be a food allergy or gallbladder?
  25. Amazing. 110 lbs in a year is fantastic. You look so good.
