    Hi Asher!
One of the best things I did to prepare for my surgery was to take off the day before the procedure. I gave myself the full day to run errands, do some laundry and make sure the house was in order before I headed out. I also made sure my bag was ready for the possibility of staying at the hospital more than one night. However, when you get your hospital bag ready, I wouldn't advise packing for a vacation- truth be told, I wore my hospital gown the whole time (they'll be in to check you so often & for so many things, my pajamas would have gotten in the way anyway), and went home in the clothes I wore the morning of my RNY. I wasn't able to get a "real" shower while I was there, and honestly, I didn't care enough about hair and makeup while I was there to use anything I packed anyway.
Something else to keep in mind is your surgeon's directives as far as eating while in the hospital. The person who brings you your "food" brings standard portions- it's up to us to remember how much we're supposed to try and handle (and don't use that straw- I got one with both "meals" I was served!)
My last bit of immediate post-surgery advice would probably be to take it easy on yourself, especially when it comes to the protein/liquid amount that will be suggested to you. Depending on your pain and tolerance levels, you simply won't be able to get that 70some grams of Protein and 64 ounces of Water every day, and that's ok. Concentrate on your Protein as much as you can, and as your body heals, the rest will fall into place. I'd stay off the scale too, for the first few days- from all the liquid they pump through your IV, you may appear heavier than when you went into surgery, and who needs that kind of discouragement?!

I don't finish my mandated weight loss until mid November but gave up sodas in May (my easiest thing to do) and coffee in June. That wasn't as easy as I love my cup of coffee in the mid afternoon. Next up was caffeine, Towards the end of my first week with no coffee, I decided to go ahead and stop the caffeine. Had the headache irritability, etc. That Sunday, my husband and I took our son and his girlfriend out to eat, I was so proud of myself...I had made a healthy choice for dinner, had unsweetened tea with my meal. I commented on the way home that I thought I must be about detoxed from all that caffeine as my headache was gone. Then it hit me, I had two glasses of caffeinated tea with dinner!! So, I started over again. But the second round of headaches was not nearly as bad and only lasted a couple of days. Now when we go out to eat, I only drink water! And if you knew how bad the Water tasted here in Waco, you'd know what a big deal that is!

All plans are different as we know, mine allows for coffee in limited amounts as long as I add that much more Water to my day so 8 oz of coffee means 64+8 water but I have always drank Decaf ...now I enjoy Click decaf Protein coffee and Starbucks skinny vanilla decaf and add a scoop of unflavored protein!! Great job on taking steps now, good luck!!!

Keep in mind that not everyone will dump. It's a 50/50 thing. I did RNY and I am happy with my results. Don't regret it. I did dump a few times but it doesn't happen all the time but then again I don't eat sweets either. Good luck!

I think the decision really comes down to your goals and what other health issues you may have.
For me - I chose RNY for two main reasons:
1 - The proven track record and history of RNY surgery looked to me like a more sure way to lose the weight I need to.
2 - The malabsorption and dumping would prevent me from sabotaging myself and potentially reverting to old ways
I didn't have comorbitities to consider and truly made the choice based on what I thought would give me the best chance at success, but since I never had the sleeve I can't say for sure that any success I have with RNY would/could not be duplicated through sleeve instead.

I had RNY July 21st. I chose it after going to the seminar and hearing what the doctor said. I had GERD terribly and the sleeve would make it worse. Also I agree with the above, dumping, etc ... the Bypass would keep me more on track. Research EVERYTHING you can on both...and GOOD LUCK!

I'd have to agree with the other posters here. It's a very personal decision and one you'd need to weigh the pros/cons.
For me, I had a serious addiction to pastas, carbs & fast foods, sugars & emotional/bored eating. I was originally going to go with the sleeve but had to take a hard look at my habits, history and where I was mentally before the surgery.
For me, this tool was the "last stop" on my weight yo-yo over the past 2 decades. I would lose weight, get comfortable then regain more weight--over & over till I ballooned to my heaviest weight of 330. I wanted that secondary "reinforcement" of staying on track w/ what you're eating AFTER you've healed from surgery and get back to "normal". With the RNY, if you eat anything high in sugar, carbs etc. your body will react right afterwards and YOU WILL have a dumping episode--which is NOT FUN.
The upside (if you want to call it that) is that you can immediately re-evaluate what you just ate and adjust to ensure it doesn't happen again. Honestly, I've never had a "dumping episode" over the same scenario twice-- but I now know that I must evaluate not just the meats I eat but also the sauces etc., the combination of foods I eat & the length between meals.
There's no "cheat" meals or days w/ RNY unless you enjoy "dumping" (which I don't). Are there days (like my birthday) where I wish I could've had a slice of that b-day cake w/icing? Yes. But these are also the times that I'm glad that I chose the RNY, cause I probably would've "cheated" if I didn't know what would happened afterwards (dumping).
Also, seeing the scale go down since my surgery (May 12) let's me know I made the best decision for me. Whatever your final decision is (sleeve or RNY), if you use it as a "tool" for permanent weight loss/healthy living, you will lose the weight and keep it off this time.
    Good luck with your decision.

You're asking a loaded question, I'll say that right off the bat. Every person on here is highly passionate about their surgery of choice and most tend to try to tarnish the other options without knowing all the facts. That being said, I was also thinking that sleeve was a good choice but after my consultation with the surgeon I ended up choosing RNY because...... I too had a sugar addiction along with a tendency to get reflux. With RNY you get sick if you eat sugar and reflux is exacerbated by the sleeve. I've done wonderfully with my surgery and would recommend it for anyone soley based on my experience. Are the other surgery good option, absolutely they are. It's really a choice that should be made between you, your surgeon and your nutritionist based on your current health and your goals for weight loss. I can tell you this. My type 2 diabetes is gone as well as my high cholesterol as well as my high blood pressure. I haven't had a problem with reflux since surgery as well. If you have specific questions please feel free to send a message. I'll do my best to answer you honestly.
