1kneeboots reacted to notyomamasfro in Hashmito's Thyroiditis and Weight Loss Surgery
    Hello Everyone,
I'm a newbie here from Texas. I am 35 years old, a full time college student and I work full-time, single mom of two beautiful girls. I have struggled with my weight most of my adult life. I have successfully lost weight twice with the help of Phentermine, but I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2004. In 2011, I found out I actually had Hashmito's Thyroiditis, since 2009 I started to struggle to lose weight and gradually gained more despite diet and exercise. In 2010, I went from 227lbs that summer to being 260lbs at Christmas! Since then, I feel like I've been losing and gaining the same 25lbs over and over again. Most of my relatives were not fat kids, but gained weight to the point of obesity/morbid obesity in their 30's and 40's. I'm not trying to do that and stay there.
I have bought a Fitbit last month and really rededicated myself to exercising and my eating right and all I have lost is 5lbs. The struggle has been real. I made up my mind at the first of the year that I was going to have weight loss surgery. I am in the process of getting my ducks in a row (sleep study, psych eval and etc.). My guess is that if I'm lucky I will have surgery either by the late summer or in the fall if my insurance approves. I didn't go to the doctor much last year, so I'm hoping I do not get denied because of lack of documentation. My BMI is 41!
At any rate, I am wondering if the surgery will help me finally get this weight off! I plan to follow it to the letter, but since I have been having such a difficult time losing the weight on my own I part of me is scared that I will be taking this drastic measure only for it not to work. I am taking Armour Thyroid and my numbers should (TSH) should be fine.
I guess my question is considering that I have hypothyroidism, can I lose and keep the weight off assuming that I follow the rules? Right now I feel like I have the metabolism of a 90 year old--a 90 year old's metabolism might be faster!

1kneeboots reacted to Dr. Adeyeri in Thinking about the future can banish the urge to “emotionally eat”
People dealing with significant obesity (who are pre- or post-bariatric surgery) are often challenged with a battle against emotional eating. We mistakenly feel (usually a short-term emotion) that eating will lighten the load, lessen the bad news, cure a sad feeling or be more fun than being bored.
New research has found a quick and simple way to help offset these cravings many of us face. It's so simple.
    And it works.

New research might provide insight into a simple way you can fight the urge to eat something fatty or sugary:
    Think about the future.
Researchers at the University of Delaware looked at how people’s emotions affect their food choices. In the first study, researchers found people rated healthy foods as being more favorable than indulgent foods when they were in a good mood (as opposed to a neutral one).
In a second study, researchers found people are more likely to prefer indulgent foods when they’re in a bad mood.
In the final two studies, researchers found that asking participants to focus on the future resulted in them choosing healthier food options while thinking only about the present caused participants to pick the less-healthy choice. This held true regardless of what mood participants were in when the study was conducted.
When you’re thinking long-term, you’re more likely to consider future health and overall quality of life benefits (better chances for finding a partner, better job options, expanded wardrobe options). But when you’re thinking now, it’s easier to get caught up in how tasty your food is—and forget about the consequences down the road.
The next time you’re ready to head to Wawa and get the mega Icy with a side of Wing Dings, make yourself stop ─ dead in your tracks ─ and think about how you’ll feel tomorrow about the decision you made. Will you feel empowered because you overcame the need to eat, or proud that you kept your “eye on the prize” and focused on losing weight?
Like every decision you make in your weight-loss journey, it’s your call.

Had my surgery in April 2013 and my life is unrecognisable from then until now. My mind is unrecognisable never mind my body, lol. I am happy and nothing in life is a problem...
Luckily for me that's what keeps me smiling when an acquaintance repeatedly tells mutual friends she is just waiting for me to "pile the weight back on".
Hell will be freezing over before I give her the satisfaction of seeing me gain a pound. But what a sad life she must have if taking pleasure in waiting for someone to fail is the highlight of her life.
The old me would have fretted about whether she might have a point. The new me says "feck her". And if she ever says it to my face, that's the gist of what I will say to her. Not very sophisticated - but I think it would be very effective in shutting her up once and for all!

My SIL is the same way. We were always dieting buddies and she had loads of fun making fun of another friend who was constantly losing and gaining. The last time she really spoke to me was when she was trash talking this friend. I asked her if she spoke of me this way when I failed another diet. Totally pissed her off.
She has no idea I had surgery and we went without seeing each other for about six months after. She went from gloating about being a size smaller than me to outweighing me by 100+ pounds. Whoooooops!
Even better? Her aunt is always on her to lose weight and now uses me as an example. Snort!
I love how much she hates me.

Hello all! I'm a bit late checking in! My VSG is just 2 days away on 8/26!!! I'm like everyone else... nervous and really looking forward to it too.
I have been doing OK on my pre-op Meal Replacement diet. I've had a little bit of head hunger, but it's not so bad. Pretty much I just have to go have another shake, or some broth, and I get through it. I've lost roughly 7 lbs on the pre-op diet, but frankly, I thought I would have lost more. I'm not knocking it, I'm just a tad bit concerned I didn't do something right. I'm wondering if I'll find out later that I was supposed to be eating more, or something crazy like that.
Anyway, I'm here.. I'll soon be on the other side of the VSG and I am excited.

It gets better. Remember that you just had a significant surgery and no one feels normal after a major surgery. Add to this the fact that you are unable to continue eating like you used to.
I felt the same way my first 2 weeks...I was miserable and wish I hadn't done it. Now that I am 6 weeks out I am so very glad I did it. It is forcing me to make good choices and adopt a healthy lifestyle. In time you will feel the same way especially when you are better healed and can progress your diet.
Hang in there! I have lost a close to 30lbs since July 14.

Stay strong, it does get better. Be kind to yourself and try not to stress. I would not worry too much about calories at the moment, concentrate on Fluid and Protein.< /p>

This too shall pass and you will feel like this WLS is the BEST thing you've done for yourself in your life! Trust me! I am almost 4 months out, 53 lbs down, energy levels ridiculously high and feel AMAZING. I am the happiest and healthiest I have been in over 30 years...!! Just get your walking in, your Protein and your Water. Good Luck!
