Hello all!
I am super excited I got approved and I am preparing for surgery. I have the following list of questions, can anybody care to add any that may be helpful that I am missing?
Some questions pertain to nursing as I am still nursing my little one and want to carry on with that until March.

I flew into Newark NJ, I had one transfer flight and it was a nightmare because it ended up getting canceled and I had to sleep in the airport overnight, not pleasant after surgery, thankfully, my sister took good care of me.
If you are flying without a companion, aim for a direct flight and pack light. The flight itself was not an issue, even with turbulence. Remember to get up and walk down the aisle every hour or two.
I also flew first class back and regular there, first time flying first class and I didn't get to eat the warm nuts but it was worth it.
-
We were told not to book our flight earlier than 3 pm. It's not such an issue for post-op tests (those go fast), it's more the possible delays at crossing the border back into the US.
My flight was at 3:05, and we got to the airport at approximately 1 pm and we left at around 11:45 am (driver was running a little later because he had to drop off patients at occ)
If your flight is at 3 it's fine, gives you a 2 hours buffer, the line for Americans to go through the border is shorter and I waited until I was in the building before showing my border crossing letter. There were several people who's flight didn't meet the timeline and they were accommodated

I went back to work after a week and a half, I have a physical job so I was on light duty. I was a little sore, but otherwise okay.

I used this Google Docs Calendar Template and just filled in info on the appropriate dates, then printed off the August, September, and October tabs (since those were the months most stuff was happening for me) and hung them on my cabinets in my kitchen. https://drive.google.com/previewtemplate?id=0As3tAuweYU9QcHlVM3hrY2tocEkzYlFhX2hXTlNRSVE&mode=public
Thank you!

Have no idea which blog site is best or even where to direct you to start, but I wanted to let u know that documenting your journey will be awesome. I so wish I had done that, with pictures and all. The transformation was just so fast...that even during some of my struggles, it was so worth it. Wish u all the best!
I've also tried to document my journey when I've started other diets, but that was mainly to keep myself on track, I was always hesitant about taking before pictures in my past because I didn't want to look at myself at that weight..and was afraid I wouldn't lose the weight.
I went to a work event, got my photo taken! I'm planning on using that as my before picture because it's a full body pic.
I'm ready for change and want to document everything this time from pics to weight and inches lost.

Hi,
I will be going for VSG Sept. 2nd, In addition to sharing posts on the forum that I feel will be helpful to others I would like to start my own blog so I can vent through this journey. Can you recommend a good site for blogging? What do you guys use?
I feel awful, but now that the date is approaching, it's all I can think about. I have already given my family and boyfriend an earful and I'm sure they are sick of hearing about it, but it is just so hard not to keep on bringing it up, my thoughts are constantly wandering to it.
Thank you =] I woud also love a buddy to be able to touch base on this subject, kind of like the buddy/mentor idea.

It would be an excellent idea to make a template with dates in excel to make it easy to track.. I have been writing everything on paper.
You are definitely lucky to only have two days of liquids. I'm on day 12 of my liquid diet, with three more to go after this. Surgery is Monday!
It's funny you mention your list-making. I have several Google Doc files going where I have a to-do list and a packing list. Plus I made a calendar of everything (when to start pre-op diet, when to go off my supplements, surgery date, when to re-start supplements, when I can start each new food phase, doctors appointments, etc.).

I wouldn't consider WLS if your eating disorder isn't under control. I have experience with both eating disorders and yoyo dieting but I have much more than 40 lbs to lose (more like 80.)
I expect old ugly feelings to resurface once I start losing weight and I am preparing myself by having the necessary support system.
The real question is would you even qualify with less than 40 lbs to lose? what is your bmi?

Wait, am I missing something? Does vsg cause you to get grey hairs regardless of age?? Or are the greys unrelated to the surgery?
I sprouted a few grays my senior semester of college.
Chem major problems lol

After I tried to have surgery previously and my liver/fat was still too big, I went to another surgeon who told me I need to do bypass because I like to eat a poptart once in a blue moon. I told him I wasn't comfortable having a blind stomach and that I didn't understand why they couldn't do bypass and remove the useless stomach part and that to me, rearranging my organs like that really weirds me out. He told me "maybe you shouldn't have any wls then." I never went back to him. I felt like he wasn't listening to my concerns. The first place I went to, I actually gained weight before surgery since it was so much Protein and carbs from the lean cuisines/weight watchers frozen meals. I'm sure it works for most people, but the new doc I'm going to says that my body is carb sensitive so to speak. So it took me about 2 years to come back to the point of having surgery again. I am going to be doing the preop diet for 3 weeks instead of just one. I feel more comfortable with this doc. I told him my story and how I was even scared to try again. He asked me if I had ever seen Shawshank Redemption, which I replied no, and he told me I should watch it and the ending moral is about not giving up hope.
Melanie, you are better off following phase 1 Atkins then switching to low carb Protein shakes, forget lean cuisine. This way you can also start cooking some recipes that you can use post op
Shawshank redemption is a great movie! A classic actually.

Cassie congrats on your decision! I think you're right- the surgery is the easier part and the aftermath is a lot harder mentally to deal with. People do treat you different and you have to mentally maintain a sense of self constantly in those situations. I'm the same person whether I'm my size now or over 300lbs. It seems like people have a harder time adjusting to being around you than you have adjusting to the new you. I admit I'm sure it is a shock when you look totally different than you ever have, but some of the comments are annoying. My mom said to me "don't act a b!&$h now that you look good" the other day when I went to visit my father and all I said was that I didn't want to hear his nurses personal problems that day I just wanted to visit with my dad. I listen to his nurse talk nonstop regularly but I just didn't want to hear it that day but I'm still trying to figure out what that has to do with how I look. I'm going to let it go, but things like that where people treat you different and make reference to your loss or your look will happen all the time. Im no different than I was 10 months ago and I wouldn't have wanted to hear his nurse talk whether I was fat or thin or somewhere in between. I just think it's important to be yourself and remain aware of that through the process.
I agree, don't let anybody tell you it's cause of the way you look, that's silly, sometimes it is better to listen then try to fight it though.. I've learned the hard way! Lol
I got measured for new uniforms today at work which we are not getting for at least a month after my surgery, to be honest I was happy because I was thinking by the time I get them I'll be at least 4 weeks post op and they will be big on me the girl there was kinda annoying, I really hate when skinny people use their size as a way to measure you. She looked at me said she's a medium so I must at least be an XL, when I told her my pant size she insist I try something 2-4 sizes bigger. A

My uncle is a US surgeon, when I told him I wanted to do this surgery he said I would have an extremely difficult time getting it approved by insurance and that my best bet is to start saving, and to pick a surgeon I feel comfortable with. I told him I'm going to a center of excellence in mexico, which he said means nothing.. He did say that gastric sleeve is the golden standard for weight loss surgery as far as he knows. I'lll be going for the vsg with Dr.Ortiz.Really? You don't think him saying "going to Mexico is suicide" isn't an asinine statement? At the very least it's racist and to me that makes him an ass.
