Any DC Metro/NoVA/MD folks
Hi Jenn! I was planning on going to the group meeting, but when I woke up Saturday morning, I had a low-grade fever and I just didn't feel well, so I went back to bed. I ended up feeling like that most of the day and slept a lot. By Sunday morning I was fine. I do want to go to a meeting, but I will be out of town for next month's meeting, so maybe November. Yes, all my testing is done. Pam will be submitting to insurance on Friday (9/26). I'm hoping since you and I have the same insurance, it will only take a week for an answer (hopefully approval!) since that is how long it took for you to get an answer and I will be able to get a surgery date by next Friday. I know I am probably looking at late November for surgery. I would love to hear about your appointment with the nutritionist and what the guidelines will be. Do you know when you will be starting the Optifast? That is the part I'm mostly dreading - those 2 weeks will be awful, but I guess worth it in the long run (at least that's what I keep telling myself!) Please keep in touch and good luck with everything! November 4th will be here before you know it!!!

Congratulations on approval and surgery date! I'm so happy for you!! When did Pam submit for approval? It doesn't seem like it took very long to get an approval. They are already scheduling into November...wow! I'm prob looking at December or January for my surgery then.

Yes...isn't that where you had yours and where the guy works?

Any DC Metro/NoVA/MD folks
You know the more info you give on this guy the more pissed off I get. Who does he think he is...God? If your doctor orders pain meds for you and you ask for them, I don't care if he thinks you abuse drugs or freakin sell them - he needs to shut up and give you the meds - PERIOD!! I haven't had my surgery yet...I'm hoping for late October, but if this dude, John, is one of my nurses and he so much as looks like he's denying me something my doctor has ordered and I ask for...there will be trouble. I will not tolerate it for one second.

Well that is just unacceptable! I didn't mean to make lite of him withholding meds that your doctor ordered for you. What were you supposed to do, just grin and bare the pain? Who the hell is he to not give you your meds? Were you denied pain meds during his entire shift? What did you do? I hope you reported him to someone. I'm sorry that you had to go through that...completely unacceptable! I would have been making all kinds of noises to make sure the dude who thought I should "cycle" through the pain was educated from someone who could put a boot up his backside. Unbelievable!

What does "cycle" through the pain mean? I hope you told him to shove it and give me my pain meds! LOL!!!

October 2014 RNY-ers :)
I'm hoping for late October surgery as well. I have to say it never occurred to me about the cooler weather for recovery and walking, but Oh Yeah!!! I hate the heat and how great will it be starting this journey in the fall! Thanks for mentioning that!!!! ????

Over the counter medications; lets discuss.
Well that is scary...medicine getting stuck? What is that about? I mean, where does it get stuck, what happens when it's stuck and what do they do in the hospital to help?

Over the counter medications; lets discuss.
This is a good topic that I hope others post more information. I'm worried about the no NSAIDS, but am still going for the RNY. (No surgery date yet) So I do need to know what I should/should not be taking. Thanks!!

Smoming
I quit smoking knowing I want this surgery. Both insurance and surgeon required me to be smoke free for 6 months. I haven't had a "real" cigarette since 12/31/13. I used an e-cigg until June 8th and then used a nicotine patch until June 16th. (I was planning on using the patch longer, but they really bugged my skin). Not a day goes by that I don't want a cigarette, but I will say it is getting easier to get past the cravings. I worry that I will smoke again after the surgery, too, but I keep telling myself you quit for this long - you will not smoke ever again. (I quit smoking for 9 months while I was pregnant - but by the time my daughter was 2 mos. old I was already back up to a pack a day, so I'm hoping I can stop myself from starting up again!!)

NSAIDS/Anti-Inflammatory Meds
Thank you for all the posts. I have been doing more research on both types of surgeries pretty much all day today. I'm still completely torn and still don't know which surgery I will get. All along I have wanted the RNY because I thought it was a better choice for me personally (I think I might need the dumping syndrome to keep me in line), but what if I fall into the group of folks that the weight loss does not help the pain and/or swelling in joints and lower back? What if I suffer some other injury that causes me pain and Tylenol doesn't work? I will be talking with the doctor as soon as I can for some medical advice, but I wanted to say thanks to you for answering my post!

NSAIDS/Anti-Inflammatory Meds
I am pre-op and have wanted the bypass and not the sleeve since I started the process. Now I have done more research and have read that after Gastric Bypass you can't take NSAIDS/Anit-Inflammatory meds. No Advil or Aleve or even aspirin. I have pretty bad arthritis and don't know what I would do without those meds for pain relief. Tylenol doesn't come even close to touching the pain. What would be your advice...should I switch to the sleeve or has someone found a substitute to control pain and swelling better than Advil or Aleve? Thanks!!

Bluepoint Surgical Group
Hi everybody! I am so glad I found this thread. I am still in pre-op stage and Dr. Moazzez will be my sugeon. I had my first appointment with him last month and I really liked him. I am going through all the hoops for the insurance, but luckily it's only 3 months. I have had all the tests done...just waiting on my last nutrician class on 8/20. When I talked to Pam, she thought I would probably have my surgery sometime in September.

What foods made you dump?
This was a great question...I'm wondering the same thing! Dumping Syndrome sounds horrible!! I'm taking notes!
