  1. The way my doctor put it was the average lap band patient loses about 40% of their excess weight. To get an average, there have to be high and low numbers. You can be as successful with the band as you choose to be. If you eat like you're supposed to and exercise, you will be more successful than if you graze all day and sit on your behind. I have 160 pounds to lose myself and my doctor has been very supportive of my decision to be banded. I would definitely seek out a second opinion. Good luck to you!

  2. Thanks Kathy. Right now I am just amazed that my back doesn't hurt if I am standing for more than 5 minutes. I am also happy that my feet and ankles don't pound anymore when I lay down for bed in the evening.

That's funny because I was just telling my husband today at my pre-op appointment that I thought that was one of the things I am most looking forward to.

  3. You answered your own question. A lot of the time, the people who have a negative attitude about WLS have never fought the battles we have trying to get control of their weight because they have never had a weight issue. That doesn't make them right or you any less knowledgable about what is right for your body. That just adds one more name to the list of people you will amaze with the new you once you have surgery and that weight is gone forever!!

  4. My husband is a very fast eater and I have found if we are eating together, I also tend to eat faster. I have already told him he will have to slow down once I have surgery because of that. We'll see how that goes. I agree with what someone else said, try to talk between bites and chew really well. If you notice you have been distracted, bring your focus back to your meal and take note of how full you feel. And remember not to drink!!

  5. My mom also "spilled the beans" for me. I had told her, my husband, and my son. I was planning to also tell my brother, but she beat me to it. Then, my uncle calls one day and asks me how much longer until I'm ready for surgery. This was after I speciaifcally asked her NOT to tell anyone else. Kinda made me mad at the time. Now though, I find I ma telling more people as my date gets closer. I'm still not yelling it from the rooftops or anything, but if it comes up, so be it. There are still a few people I defintitely won't share with (and am hoing no one else finds the need to), but I am a lot more open about it than I was at first.

  6. I totally understand... here is what I did.... I did Protein shake throughout the day... then when dinner came... I had a salad first......got pretty filled up on that... and then had the entree... so I got to taste what I wanted to eat so badly... but I didnt over eat it because I had filled almost all the way up before eating the entree.... Like we went for pizza... I ordered a nice house salad... ate the whole thing... waited about 5 minutes ate a piece of my FAV FAV pizza and was done.....

You are getting use to the shakes during this time too.....when it is time to go on just shakes you will have all your favorite shakes lined up to get you through your liquid phase....

    It worked for me.... !!!

I am 8 days post op and have only had shakes and broth and Water and I am fine... I did all shakes 4 days prior to surgery.....

That sounds like a good idea! :tt2: I am less than 3 weeks from my surgery and less than 1 week from my pre-op diet and I am eating like a mad woman!! I had reallly been doing well up until I got my approval and it has been an almost non stop binge ever since.

  7. I managed to make it home on Sunday. Rested yesterday and back to work today. Working seems to take my mind off how bad I feel. Still hurts more than I think it should but it is manageable. Lots of gas pains too. I am going to try and keep plugging away at work.

Sorry you are feeling so bad. Hope it starts getting better soon!

  8. Still holding on to a small piece of hope he'll change his mind. If not, he's fired, and I'll find a new GP. Was hoping he would call today, but don't look like it. I'll give him till tommorow, and after work if he hasn't called I'll stop by the office, and get my records.

Did you hear anything from the doctor today?

  9. I just bought the chocolate and vanilla Protein powders from Walmart--the brand is Fortress, I believe. I haven't tried them yet, but either way, it's what I'm stuck with. I'm officially a budget bandster, I can't really spend 40-50 bucks on a tub of Protein Powder. These were like $13 each for the same quantity of the more expensive ones.

That's the one I bought in bulk too. I have only bought the vanilla, but I like it. It has no after taste. I am going to try the chocolate too. Have you cracked yours open yet? I ordered the samples for so I can add some variety to my liquid diet, but don't see them as a long-range thing because it can get costly. I ordered 9 samples and it was like $20!
