What's for breakfast?
What does everyone eat or drink for Breakfast? I am looking to maximize my Protein intake in the morning and am looking for good and healthy options. My go-to now is a protein pudding that is really delicious, It is just too sweet to eat every day for breakfast. This is a drastic change post-op for me since sweets were a "hot button" food for me prior. Any ideas or recipes would be most helpful.

3 weeks out is it normal to have 8 oz of food
As far as the length of time of meals, I would try to keep it at 30 minutes. You don't want to have your pouch start to empty out while you are still eating creating more room for more food. I was told meals should be between 20-30 minutes, but not longer, Perhaps this is why you never get a full feeling. My problem is that I don't spend enough time per meal! Best of luck!!

Calcium citrate
So I just checked with my NUT and was told that the capsules are totally fine - as long as I take 1500 mg per day in 3 - 500mg doses. or It is very strange how different programs have different guidelines for the Vitamin regimen for the same surgery. I've read tons of posts where patients are taking Flintstone chewables and my program said they are a big no no! Thanks again for all of the feedback. Hope everyone has a great day!

Calcium citrate
@@BryBro63 Thanks for the feedback. It really isn't about the carbs I just trying to find an alternative to the chews. My NUT said I could switch to Citrical but the pills were getting stuck before. I'm call my NUT again to check. If I need to switch back to chewables I will. Thanks to all for all of the feedback!

Calcium citrate
I tried a chewable from Vitamin Shoppe but I hated the chalky taste. Thanks for the info!

Calcium citrate
Does anyone take a Calcium citrate capsule instead of a chewable? I recently switched to a capsule instead of the Bariatric Advantage soft chews. The soft chews, to me, had too many carbs in each one and were a little pricey. I found some capsules at Vitamin Shoppe and they are easy to take. I just want to make sure that they are being absorbed. My Dr. said I could switch to a pill instead of a chewable but the pills were getting stuck.. No problem with the capsules though.

My bypass is tomorrow
@@Neesy.pendy Best of luck Denise! I really learned a lot from this site during my first week post-op. I'm sure you have heard this a million times, but make sure you walk, walk, walk as soon as you can after surgery. It helps with the healing. The breathing machine is also really important post-op! For the first 2,3,4 days after surgery I didn't think I would be able to eat or drink anything. It gets much better!!! Good luck!!

How can I increase my protein intake during the first four weeks post op...?
I used to hate Greek yogurt then I learned to "tolerate" it. Now, I really don't mind it at all. I have it in some ort of way at every meal. I mix with things to make a sauce for chicken, turkey etc. This has helped keeps the meats really soft and much easier to eat. I was having problems with food getting stuck and coming back up, now, it's not really a problem any more. I always have plain Greek yogurt in the refrigerator. Best of luck!!

How much do you eat for lunch and dinner?
@@Jorrin That is what was so confusing for me. I think I was told about 1/4 cup of food during the the transition stage but when I got the sample diet plan it seemed like a lot more that that amount of food per meal and it also included some Snacks. I'm over 3 months now and things are going really good for me, (I think!! lol) I was just curious. I want to keep my stomach as small as possible for as long as possible!!!

How much do you eat for lunch and dinner?
@@mamie60 Wow! Our stories are very similar. We both started at the same weight! I had my surgery 7/14/14 and have lost about the same amount as you in 3 months. My problem is that I don't measure the food I eat. I usually weigh my Protein and now and can pretty much tell a 3 oz. serving. There isn't room for much else! I think after the protein I get another 1/4 from a veggie or yogurt, etc. I think we are both doing great! Congrats on the first 3 months so far and from getting off of of your meds! Here's to the next 3 months!!!!

After coming home
I agree, I spent 2 nights in the hospital then went to a family member's house for one night. After that I went back to my house and was on my own. If I had to do it all over again, I would of stayed with family for another day or so. I had some obstruction issues ( I know, TMI!) that lasted a few days and were awful. I will say, I had my surgery on a Tuesday and went back to work the following Monday in a limited capacity. Best of luck!

How much do you eat for lunch and dinner?
@@Jonathan Blue Thanks for the info Jonathan! I think I get about 3/4 cup of food at each meal but only eat 3 meals a day. I think since surgery I've had maybe 1 or 2 Snacks in between meals. I just am not hungry. Your progress is inspiring! I ran a marathon in 2000 and my hope is to complete another one within the next 2 years also. Best of luck in all of your journeys!

3 month-before and during pics!
@@Dabliss111114 My doctor only required a 3 day prep but I did 4 just so I could get used to drinking Protein shakes. When I decided to move forward with the surgery in April I quit drinking all soda/ carbonated beverages/ caffeine , etc. I started getting all of my Water in everyday about 3 months prior to my surgery. Could the headaches be caffeine related? How are the Protein Shakes going for you? If you are a member of costco they have a really good Protein shake (premade in I think 10 oz. servings) It is Premier Protein. This is what got me through the pre-surgery prep and the weeks after surgery, I although for the first week I thought it would take an entire week to finish a 10oz shake! They taste great! When is your surgery? So happy for you that the prep is going pretty good for you! Best of luck with everything. Although I am pretty much a newbie myself and far from an expert, please let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Some of these post/topics really helped me immediately after surgery.

How much do you eat for lunch and dinner?
Just curious how much everyone is eating for lunch and dinner. I don't know if I am eating too much or too little. I starting weighing the Protein (chicken, pork, turkey- my 3 main proteins) and eat about 3 oz. at each meal along with a little Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and a few edamame . Is that too big a serving of meat? I know I'm getting in my protein but just want to make sure I'm not eating too much. Don't want to stretch the pouch!

3 month-before and during pics!
Here's my story! I've struggled with my weight my entire life. Blah, blah, blah! This is, I'm sure, the same story for most of us. I've tried all diets and have had a lot of success only to see the weight gradually come back the minute I stopped exercising and "dieting". I haven't stepped on a scale for over 7 years nor did I go to the doctor's office in this time frame. Quite frankly, I didn't want to hear the number, my weight. In the spring I started doing research on weight loss surgery and decided to move forward and attend a seminar. I was so impressed! Even though this was not covered by my insurance and I paid out of pocket, I moved forward with RNY. I didn't really "diet" prior to surgery but I didn't go on a eating binge either. I only had to do a 3 day surgery prep and had my surgery on July 14, 2014. This is my "before" and "during" pics. The last 3 months have truly been life changing. I've learned so much from this site and others. I look at food so much differently now. I don't consider myself as being on a "diet". Instead, I just choose to eat really healthy foods. I've stuck to a really low carb/high Protein diet. Pretty much the same for all of us. I really enjoy reading all of your stories and get something out of all of them. As of today, just about 3 1/2 months post op, I am down about 85 lbs! Here's to the next 3 months!!!

Question for vets that are 6 months post op
I just had my 3 month post op follow up with my doctor and things are going really well. I've lost over 75 lbs. since surgery with little or no problems, I am wondering if any of the vets encountered any setbacks/problems during the 3-6 month time frame. I made my 6 month appointment but am wondering how important it is to keep it. The reason I ask, is that my surgery was self pay and my follow ups are no longer covered by my self pay payment. I need to pay out of pocket for all future visits with the surgeon. I am hoping I can just transfer to my PCP and have insurance cover the visits. It was hard enough paying for the surgery so I don't want to keep paying out of pocket. Any thoughts are feedback anyone can give would be much appreciated.

8 months out
@@Nancy E. Here is a link to the Protein that I use. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/dymatize-nutrition-iso-100-gourmet-vanilla-1-6-lb-powder/d4-1055#.VEPR-JUtDIU I have the vanilla and the chocolate/peanut butter that are pretty good. I add a few splashes of the sugar free Toriani syrups to and a bit more flavoring.

8 months out
@@jrotondella Congrats on all of your success! Your pictures are fabulous. I am about 3 months post op now and have lost abut 75 lbs. so far. My only problems is food getting stuck. I guess from eating too fast or taking too big of bites. Even though I thought I was eating slow and taking small bites I have the problem pretty often. (about once a week) Any suggestions? Do you eat a lot of meat or mainly get the Protein from shakes. @@Beni I also prefer the Premier Protein Shakes from costco. They taste great and have a lot of protein. I've recently switched to a whey isolate protein that has no carbs/sugars with 27 grams of protein in a little scoop and only 130 calories. The taste is really good too.
