  1. I can definately relate. I am 17 months out and have never gotten to goal. My loss came to a screeching halt around November. I refuse to think of myself as a failure, I am determined to get to goal, regardless how long it takes.

I recently met w/my bariatric team. They recommended:

    1) get over 20 g of Fiber a day (I was only getting about five)

    2) make sure 2 days a week I include strength training, ,even if it's only 10-15 minutes, as this will speed up my metabolism.

    3) work out 5/6 days a week

    4) log my food. Side note, I recently bought a Fitbit and love it. Both work together and help me remain accountable.

    5) and of course the old bariatric saying, "Protein first".

Remaining hopeful & wishing you success.

  2. food obsessions

-Perky Jerky (sweet and spicy) have to have it everyday.

-skinnypop popcorn, I usually have two cups a day

-Quest Protein bars, chocolate chip only.

    Other obsessions

-online shopping, I challenged myself not to buy anything for the month of February. I failed, it only lasted about two weeks. I justify it by saying I'm paying cash instead of credit.

-interior decorating-a serious passion and lastly,

-flower gardening. I live in the Midwest so I only have a few months to enjoy this passion, May can't get here fast enough!

  3. Have you ever thought about getting a second opinion from another surgeon?

I was following a lady on YouTube and she, too, lost about 25-30lbs in a year, she disappeared for awhile and returned explaining she sought out a second opinion & found out she needed a revision. Within 6 months after the revision, she lost all her weight.

Hope you don't have to go down that road & maybe there's an easier answer. Just something to consider……

  4. OK, you said you wanted the good or bad, so my personal experience the first week was not so great. the pain was horrible. I didn't have gas pain mine was more at the incision. I could not meet the walking goal my surgeon set for me, so I had to spend two days in the hospital. I was never nauseous.

They also sent me home with blood thinners for two weeks! So I had to give myself shots every morning and night for two weeks and to be honest that may have been the WORST part of my experience. Thankfully, my husband took the first week off with me and he gave me the shots but nonetheless it was still very painful. Fortunately, not many people have to do that.

Here's the good news, by day four or five I no longer need the pain meds and things started getting better. I NEVER threw up or had any complications after that.

The thing to remember is no matter what you experience, it will get better. I remained positive because I knew it was a temporary setback. I would do the surgery over again in a heartbeat

Wishing you an easy breezy experience.

  5. I have a thyroid condition(hypo) and although I am struggling to get to goal, these last twenty pounds are so difficult, I'm still pretty pleased w/my progress (75#).

I was also borderline diabetic & my dr.was going to refer me to a specialist but I begged her to wait, as I was preparing for the surgery.

Thankfully, my numbers are now perfect, I never needed meds.

You'll find many people lose successfully w/a thyroid condition.

  6. Wow, just saw this thread for the first time, never thought menopause could be a factor. I always blamed my thyroid. I never reached goal ( I'm 17 months out). Now, I have to assume menopause could be a factor?

I work out 5 days a week, log my calories and still vacilate between 167/168 #. Very frustrating and at times emotional. You would think with all this work I could drop at least a few pounds. Sigh...

Anyway, I'm determined. I just have to figure out what will work for me.

  7. Sigh.....I can relate. But, I know sometimes when the scale doesn't move you have to re-evaluate what you're doing. It's possible you may not be getting enough calories. What is your carb intake-do you track it?

Once my exercise physiologist told me to take a week off to let my body rest & I lost two #'s that week. I really don't like doing that because it makes it hard to start back after a week of rest.

Your body can get used to the same routine and you have to tweak things to get the scale moving again.

How about strength training? I was recently told to incorporate weights two days a week, that started my scale moving again, ounces only but I'll take it.

  8. I have hypothyroidism as well and had my levels checked a few months after surgery and they were fine. Med was not adjusted but I'm scheduled for my annual blood work in May, curious to see if they will adjust. I take armour thyroid, not synthroid.

Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky ones with the weight coming off fast. Mine has been pretty slow. I have been at the same weight since November 2015.

I'm still hopeful that I'll lose the last 20 pounds, but I'm still very pleased with my progress. Before surgery I worked out 3 to 4 days a week and would not lose a pound. So, I know, without a doubt , my thyroid condition has been a huge factor in my slow loss. Remaining hopeful.

  9. I opted for no emails too and I always look for the red# on the top right (next to the envelope symbol) of my IPad to let me know I have notifications. I don't receive them any more. I have to actually click on it now to see my notifications, strange.

  10. We have similar stats. I was 228 on surgery day and like you, I worked out before surgery and could NOT loose weight. I am still struggling to get to goal.

My bariatric team provides me w/an exercise physiologist. He recommended I work-out 4-6 days a week but admittedly, I worked out 3-4 days. However, in the past month I've increased it to 5 days. He wants me to mix it up & keep the body guessing. I do zumba and run on the treadmill with some strength training (at home).

I was also told by my team that weight loss is 70-80% diet, working out is mostly to keep your heart healthy.

I love how I feel after a workout. I have more energy, sleep soundly and it helps with my mood.
