How do I know if....
Lissapmkn1 replied to katykate94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too, had gastric bypass on June 30th. I am able to now take bigger sips, but in the beginning they were very small. Now I can drink 2 -3 sips at a time -
Hi! I went in on Monday morning and left Wednesday at noon. I had no complications, no pain afterwards and had since had no issues. My surgery was June 30, 2014 and I am on all foods now. It's tough getting in all the Protein, but other than that I am great!! Back teaching with no issues!

Hi Angel, I had RNY on June 30th this year. I have had several occurrences of this and have found it to be normal, albeit frustrating, but normal. What my NUT/Dr. told me to check each time was if I had enough Protein, enough Water AND enough calories. I stalled because I was eating flounder (very high in protein) but really low in calories. Eating about 4 oz of flounder gave me 30g of protein but only about 160 calories. So while I got in my protein, I was too low in calories. So I had to bump up my calories! I know it sounds weird being that we have been taught to count calories, but this time I was really low. EX: Breakfast 1 - Dannon Fit and Light 80 calorie Greek Yogurt 12g protein - 80 calories 3 - Peanut Butter Protein Balls ( 5-6g protein in each) 15g protein - 80 calories lunch 4 0z Flounder 30g protein - 160 calories dinner 4 oz chicken Breast - plain - 35g protein - 184 calories Total protein (92g - my required daily amount) Total Calories (504) So I upped my calories to 700 and began dropping weight again. Hope this helps you! Clarissa

If you love Peanut Butter, try peanut butter Protein balls. 1C PB2 1C Protein powder - your choice of flavor 1C Steel Cut oats 1/4 C Natural, unsweetened applesauce Mix together and then roll in more oats to keep them from being to sticky! YUMMY! One batch = ~17 balls Each ball has 72.7 calories and 5 -6 grams of protein.

Is sleeping on your side safe within the first few days/weeks post op?
Lissapmkn1 replied to MisPetunia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ditto - side sleeping since the surgery. If you have no pain, you're fine -
Here's what my day looks like: Breakfast: Dannon Fit and Light Greek Yogurt and 3 Protein balls = 27 g Lunch: 5 oz. chicken breast = 35 g protein dinner will be: 4 - 5 oz of flounder = 28 - 35 g protein I may have a 1/2 c cottage cheese for a snack and that will put me over my needed amount. I started eating 1 oz at a time. Then pushed to 2 oz, then 3 oz….etc…I am now up to 5 oz and can eat comfortably at that. That's where I want to be. I make sure I get in protein first and if I am full (which I usually am) I don't eat anything more, but perhaps a sugar free popsicle at night as a treat!

I have had trouble getting in 92g of Protein a day and this has stalled my weight loss. I made some protein balls the other day to help me get in more protein without having to have a shake. I didn't get in 92 g yesterday and consequently was at the same weight today as yesterday. Concentrate on getting in all your protein and your weight will go down

I feel like I am dying! =/
Lissapmkn1 replied to pik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you using milk or anything with lactose? It's super common to become lactose intolerant after the surgery...I did. Switched to lactose free milk and it stopped. Took a day to get out of my system. I also was using carnation sugar free instant breakfast and it had lactose. My pain stopped after I stopped eating anything with lactose! -
Please, please, please, what can I eat that won't cause this horrible gas?
Lissapmkn1 replied to 4meonly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lactose caused it for me and I was in horrible pain. Have you been eating dairy? If so, cut it out immediately and go to Lactaid or lactose free milk and dairy. You can also take the lactaid pills (I got the Walgreens brand - less expensive) and they work just fine. It will take 24 - 48 hours to leave your system, but once it does, you will know it and feel a difference. Drink lots of water and eat sugar free popsicles because it can dehydrate you. Let me know how you fair! -

Shooting chest tightness rather than vomitting
Lissapmkn1 replied to latido's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist advised us to be very careful with "dry" foods - i.e. cooked chicken (cook it in broth), add fat free mayo or greek yogurt to chicken and tuna salad….What she said would happen is what you are experiencing. I had chicken salad yesterday and it got stuck. Realized how right she was. You need to add some moisture to it, and I cheat and add a sip of water. -
Why do I always feel hungry?!
Lissapmkn1 replied to nearnermal78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with head hunger. I realized the 2 weeks post surgery that I wasn't hungry, but my brain kept telling me I should eat something. It is weird because my stomach and my brain tell me different things. I realized I needed to find things to do or the overeating issue would still be there! You can do it! When I feel like a need something, I go for one sugar free popsicle. I feel like I've had a treat and it helps with hydration! -
almost 3 weeks post op
Lissapmkn1 replied to kayla1990's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If we don't eat enough Protein, we don't lose! Every single day that I don't get in my protein, I don't lose. It's eating to lose which is backwards to what we think! Eat protein! -
I haven't been told yes or no. I chewed gum pre-surgery and I had gum this week (3 weeks post op) and no problems. Just don't swallow!

Hi My drain hole oozed for several days. The area around it is still red as it heals. Dr. checked me out and said it was fine. My oozing stopped after a several days. if the oozing changed color - greenish and had an odor to it, I was instructed to call. He did say to clean it with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide/1/2 water, but I never did. Was checked again this past week and everything is good. Glue is coming off and so are some of the scabs. All normal. When in doubt call - only you know how your body has changed!

Hi Stacyann, My surgery was on June 30, 2014 and while I was not outwardly nervous the day I had surgery, my blood pressure said something totally different! I have never had high blood pressure at all, but the day of my surgery when they checked, it was 204! Little beepers went off! I realized I was internally scared, but had only found bariatric pal two days before my surgery. After about 5 minutes of deep breathing and telling myself that so many people I knew had surgery with the Dr. I had also chosen, my blood pressure came down to 130/74 and I got a hold of myself! I had a drain and it did not bother me, but the last day it began to be a little sore. I had stopped taking pain meds and it was not painful - just sore. Because I was checking out that day they took it out. I took a deep breath, clenched my tummy muscles and it was a breeze when they took it out. No pain. The drain hole healed up very quickly, too! 7 days after surgery it was healed and is the size of a pencil eraser. My surgeon used an anesthetic pack for my stomach. It was a pouch that I wore around my neck and two little bitty (and I mean super tiny) tubes delivered anesthetic directly to my stomach during my hospital stay. So I really felt very little, if any pain after surgery. Once I came home, other than needing a nap in the afternoons and trying to make sure I walked, I really have had no pain. When I did have pain I found it was from becoming lactose intolerant - a very common issue after surgery. Lactose free milk is just plain gentler on your stomach and once I switched, it has been great. I am due for my 2 week post op appointment in 5 days and other than drinking shakes for meals, I don't feel like I have had surgery. No pain, no discomfort. I know everyone's different, but I want you to know the my truth. I also had many friends and family praying for me and that feeling surrounded me as I took comfort in knowing I was cared for. Keep asking questions and know that we are all in this together. (No high school musical song pun intended!) Lissa

Because your stomach is tiny and stapled, I would call your Dr. asap. You don't want to have bleeding internally or a tear or something of that kind. And don't worry about what your Dr. will say - your life is more important!

People Won't Cater to You
Lissapmkn1 replied to OkieAsh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been out to dinner with friends since my gastric bypass and ordered broth. I made the decision to change and so I will need to do all the modifying. One thing I keep thinking about is that I was raised to offer to bring something when invited to a dinner or party. By suggesting to bring something, I guarantee that there will be something there that I can eat. On the flip side, I have friends who have food allergies and every time we have a get together, they ask everyone if they have any food issues so that they might be kind in accommodating others needs. They are absolutely lovely people and I am blessed to have friends such as this. In the end, I do feel it is up to me though! -
I had surgery on June 30 and have not experienced any pain like that at all. Have you had any prior abdominal surgeries that could be contributing to this? If not, call your Doc. Better to be safe about it. Best wishes and keep us posted!

pirate's booty cheddar puffs
Lissapmkn1 replied to latido's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi - I am week 2 post surgery…..I think the issue with it might be carbs, artificial ingredients and non nutritional caloric intake, plus it's in a new tummy. I am on a strict 2 week post op full liquid diet, then soft foods (cottage cheese, applesauce, canned tuna, canned chicken in little tiny flakes. Grains and carbs aren't entering back into the picture for 4 more weeks and those are healthy choices only. Raw foods not until late September and October. I know everyone's Dr. does is a little differently, so what I am following may not be what everyone is following. In support of what you are feeling, I am sick to death of sweet Protein shakes - UGH and so I leave broth for my salty choice. I am dying to chew something - celery, carrots - anything! I don't think what you did will hurt you and so understand why! I am really trying hard to focus on forming the good long term habits that I never had before. This surgery has given me the chance to start over and I know that this is my last option. You keep on going and know we are with you! -
milk making me sick?
Lissapmkn1 replied to maizeashley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one week post gastric bypass surgery. Have had all your symptoms, plus horrible gas and diarrhea and finally remembered that they did advise us we could become lactose intolerant following the surgery. I didn't eat anything yesterday and cleaned out my system. Today I started with lactose free milk and am fine. Watch out for hidden lactose in sugar free products! Combine those with the milk and it's horrible. I was eating my Protein shakes with Skim Milk and Carnation Sugar Free Instant Breakfast and it literally had me in bed, in pain, with a fever! All is well now that I have eliminated lactose! Best of luck! Clarissa -

Hi all June 20 surgery gals and beyond - I am four days post op and so excited! No pain, just a few little burpies The staff at Del Sol Bariatric Clinic in El Paso, Texas are outstanding! Kind, generous, always explaining everything and just really caring. Additionally, Dr. Acosta's office staff are amazing! I am so thankful that Dr. Acosta was my surgeon and that I had amazing care. Down 35 lbs since I started the pre-diet and am not on full liquids. 12 days to my post op visit where I will be cleared for soft foods. I am dreaming of what i will look like in another year and am so excited! How about you ladies! What are your post surgery plans! Clarissa -
