  1. Hi, I'm in the beginning stages of my surgery process. I came in with high hopes, I was hoping I would be able to have surgery within 4 months. Unfortunately I was informed BCBS NC requires me to complete 6 month supervised diet, I won't be able to have my surgery until December . Honestly I am depressed and very disappointed. I've been dealing with my weight issue since Preschool. I've been on numerous diets, i've gained all the weight back then some. After attending my biatric surgical practice educational seminar I was extremely excited and ready. So now I'm trying to pick myself up and look at the brighter side of all of this but it's hard. Is there anyone experiencing same thing or have any advice? Are you beginning sleeve process?

    September Sleevers!

Don't feel bad about asking questions. We're having a major procedure completed. I was very nervous when I saw my surgeon last week and I knew I would be so I wrote down my questions the night before. When I saw him I asked him 3 of 6 questions lol. Lucky for me he covered all the areas I questioned. I hope you get the answers you need before your procedure. Wishing you the best!!!

    Newbie looking for Oct sleevers!

Hey Peekaboo, if your surgeon doesn't require you to stay overnight make sure you feel totally comfortable before leaving. Whether you're on a liquid or pureed diet you should be able to get your protein down comfortably. And you should request to be evaluated after a couple of hours of intaking your diet. You will be fine but you have to make sure you advocate for your needs. My doctor will be performing a series of test the day after my surgery and making sure I'm able to keep my liquid diet down without any trouble. Remember to Advocate For You!!!

    October 2014

Hey Nikki, congratulations to you. I have the same emotions, I'm ready though. I'm nervous about how much my life is going to change. I'm trying to stay occupied by planning my 4 week liquid diet, pureed meals, and triple checking the things needed for aftercare. The only thing I'm focused on 24/7 is October 7th. I wish you best, we will do awesome! Dana

Thanks, it went great. Everything happened very quickly and the staff were just awesome at Atlantic Gastroenterology! At this point I'm waiting for insurance approval from BCBS NC. Once approved I'll meet with my surgeon and schedule procedure date ! I'm very excited, all I think about is having surgery. Best wishes to all!

Looking for Sleeve Buddy in NC

I am very excited! I will be completing my endoscopy on 9/4 and that's it for my pre-op appointments. So I'm hoping I can have my surgery the beginning of October. Where are you with your appointments?
  12. During my bariatric appt today I learned that the 6 month supervised diet may be no longer after July 1, 2014 for BCBS NC policy holders. The Bariatric Association has been arguing that the 6 month supervised diet requirement has shown no benefit for many individuals seeking insurance approval and it prolongs on-going medical issues of many. As we all know some individuals benefit from having to wait 6 months before surgery (more education, planning, etc.). However some individuals are dangerously obese and want to start their journey to becoming healthier. I did not want to wait, I've been educating myself over the past 3 months (everyday) because I'm ready for a change. I've always been overweight. I have 2 pages of past diets and I can't count how many times I've tried to starve myself so I wouldn't put calories in my body (hoping my body would burn the fat). I know some may say that was stupid, it was but I've always wanted to look healthier. I have a very nonexistent metabolism. I have to work out 7 days a week, 30 days a month to see results. Realistically I don't have the time with career, 3 children, husband and household. I learned this morning that I only have to complete my endoscopy and psychological. Then I can see my surgeon and get scheduled for surgery!! Anyway I didn't mean to get off topic but I'm really excited !! I will definitely keep you posted if i hear more regarding BSBC NC decision. Hope this helps someone.

    Finally Did It

Congratulations, I wish you the best!!! I'm ready for my big day as well .
  14. Hey, I'm not on the post-op side yet but I like reading how people are doing on this side. I'm sorry you are not feeling well and I hope you are feeling better soon. I saw that you are thinking of taking Tylenol. My practice has informed me to avoid pills unless chewable after surgery. But I know medical advice differs for everyone. Did your surgeon give you a list of medications you should not take after surgery? If your fever persist you should consider seeking medical attention. There has to be a reason for the temperature if it continues.
  15. Hello Everyone, I started a thread a little while ago regarding Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC possibly changing 6 month supervised weight/diet requirement. As of today the requirement has been removed. This is awesome news for a lot of us. The Surgical Morbid Obesity policy has been updated to reflect change. Hope this information helps someone.
  16. I haven't heard anything since I contacted my surgical practice. Thinking about calling my insurance company today. I checked BCBS NC website for upcoming policy revisions but I didn't see a policy pertaining to bariatric surgery requirements.
  17. Hey everyone, just called my surgical practice for update. They've heard the following, the decision to eliminate the 6 month supervised diet has been approved. However practices cannot do anything differently until the update is put in writing. They are expecting the updated policy revision on July 15. This is so awesome!

    Just Starting 6 Month Program

Hey, we've had a discussion before. I'm looking to have surgery in November or December. So I would definitely like us to continue communicating with each other and we're both NC coastal girls lol! I'm very excited as well. But I must admit that when I think about the wait it's a little frustrating. Like you I'm educating myself everyday. My surgical practice is awesome, I'm getting much information from them. I'm competing my psych endoscopy next month. Those are the only appointments I have besides the supervised diet appts of course. This app is very informative and I enjoy having the support of individuals that are pre & post op. Please stay in touch & I'll do the same. I wish you the best on your journey!
  19. Hi, I'm having my surgery through Southern Surgical Associates in Greenville, they are awesome. I hope the change happens, I think it would be beneficial for many including myself.
  20. Yes your insurance agent should be able to give you information about it. My doctor informed me the decision will be given on July 1st. But please let me know what you hear from your insurance agent.
  21. The entire Bariatric Team was buzzing about it, everyone is ready to see if this change is going to happen. I know a lot of people who will benefit from the change.
