    Thyroid

Awesome. I'll know shortly myself. I had my labs drawn yesterday by my PCP. Thyroid is one he's checking on. I am on Synthroid. He said it will change with the weightloss and med will have to be adjusted.

    Post op day 5

good job! Hope your recovery continues smoothly.
  3. Yah, that sneeze a few days post op was painful. Coughing was tough enough (holding a pillow). The good news is it gets better pretty quickly. I'm almost 5 weeks out and I've sneezed a few times over the past couple of days. It was painless/normal. I think I noticed by two weeks that I didn't have any problem coughing. Until something in the air changed, I hadn't been sneezing (thankfully).

Left Side Pain 17 mo post op

Hi I had something similar. At the exam I was asked some questions. For example, is it related to when you eat? Or does it come on at anytime? Is it sharp pain, or dull pain, or both? Does it effect breathing? Any fever? It could be intestinal. I had similar symptoms at 3 - 4 weeks post op. Ended up I need a laxative. But before that I was kind of freaking out thinking leak. What ever the case, don't stop bugging your surgeon. You shouldn't be having pain like that and they need to keep looking until they find the cause. They did a CT, did they do a swallow study?
  5. I use these products, except the unflavored. The chicken Soup stirs up fine in a cup using a spoon. Just make sure the Water temp is not above 140 degrees. I have a little rubbermaid bottle, nothing fancy (it's the one Unjury sent when I bought a smaple pack), that I use for the shakes when away from my Ninja. It mixes well. I've not tried to mix with just a spoon, sorry. But I would think if it wasn't working, a mason jar would work, then you could give it a few shakes.

    6 week Post Op

@cindyd1967 I know it's frustrating, I'm in a stall myself. But one thing I've learned is not to compare my progress with other people's. Everyone is different. I was 195 the day of surgery. I have read that people with less than 100lbs to lose tend to lose slower. That's ok - it will still come off Keep the faith!
  7. a little over a week. It's the evil dreaded 3 week stall Looking at my intake I think I need to increase it. I'm running between 450 - 650 a day. Most days I can get in close to my nut's goal of 80g of Protein (it was easier with shakes, lol). I graduated from full liquids last week to eating soft, moist protein (chicken, tuna, turkey) and it's been a challenge. Everything goes down ok, etc. I still try to get in one Protein shake to make my goal. I'm figuring out how to eat, not drink 30 min, then drink..then a snack? then not drink, then drink...eat. Sigh. It will get easier, I know. But I need the entire day to work this out. So trying to increase cals is a little difficult right now. 8. Well, I may be stuck in a stall, but I'm happy to report that I'm in to the smallest clothes I own (14) I donated 3 bags of clothes yesterday. This time I am not keeping fat clothes! Sizes up to 24...gone! Good riddance! lol Have more clothes to go through, and I'm so happy to get some space back. We don't have much closet space, so it's really needed. Now if this stall would end, I'd be super happy
  9. Hi, are you referring to the ticker(s) at the bottom of my post? If so, they are found under your account settings: To the right of your name is a little "gear" symbol. Click on that and more options will appear. Select "my tickers". Once there, select "create new ticker". From there it walks you through the steps
  10. Is the nausea after eating certain things? e.g. milk based shake? You could be lactose intolerant. Nausea can also be from excess acid. Are you on an antacid/PPI from your dr.? If not, I believe you should be. If you are, and it's not food item related, perhaps you need it increased. In any event, you should not be nauseous all of the time - it's best to call you surgeon.
  11. I had stomach pains post-op (4 or 5 days out). They were pretty bad, and kept me from sleeping, etc. The pain would go right through my back. The Dr. brought me in, and did another ESD. Discovered acid reflux. So my omeprazol was increased to 2 x a day. That took care of it. I also kept Tums on hand if I needed them. Have taken Tums a couple of times, more so right after the PPI increase. That was 3 weeks ago, and now I don't have any issues. But be persistent! That kind of pain isn't "normal" IMO. Hope you have it resolved very soon.
  12. Hi First of all, you're not too old! I'm 51 and am 4 weeks post op. Folks in their 50's and 60's are on this board and are successful I don't know if you've had prior surgeries, but I have had more than my share. This is pretty easy. You'll have a few days in the beginning that are the most uncomfortable. But after that every day really gets better quickly. Nothing to be afraid of. The initial pain from right after surgery really seems to vary by person. But you're in the hospital and don't be afraid to ask for a painkiller if you need it. As far as work goes, you don't need to tell anyone, even your boss, what the reason is. It's just "medical" leave. It's a personal choice as to whether you tell people at work. The only time anything is noted about the surgery is on the FMLA form. That goes to HR and they would be violating HIPAA if they told anyone. My HR person doesn't even look, just puts it in the file. What helped me the most in this journey was the preparation before hand. Not every surgeon has the same program, so if you haven't chosen one, I would suggest finding one with the support you'll need. Not one that wants to do the surgery in two weeks and that's it. I had 4 months of learning to eat properly prior to my surgery, involving support groups, Nut appts, and so on. This made the post op transition much easier. In addition to nutrition, it enforced eating slowly and drinking/sipping Water all day. As far as complications go, there is a forum for that. It's good to read what some unfortuante folks have been through. But also keep in mind that the odds are very low of having a problem. But you have to understand what can happen and make an educated choice to proceed. Spend some time checking out the different areas of the site. Do lots of reading. Ask questions (great support here). Find a very good surgeon/Bariatric center if you move forward. Undertand that they operate on your stomach, not your head. So be prepared to deal with your relationship with food - it IS going to have to change to be successful. In the end, do what's right for YOU.
  13. Hi, yes that's what my surgeon recommends. Dose of 4 instead of 3, too. I take two in the a.m. and two in the p.m. I have the orange cream - not bad. I'm sure I'll tire of them, but I think of it as medicine. :-)
  14. Hi I have been having left sided pain for about a week. Had my 4 weeks appt today. It is believed to be, well...from not being regular post op. Yes. I'm apparently full of it I'm told if I'm not going enough, and fully, that residual backs up in the intestine that travels across and down the left side. You also trap gas there. So I've been told to take MOM more frequently (I had taken it a couple of times). Get things moving well. Also don't wait more than 3 or 4 days to take more if needed. I wanted to share this in case you could be in the same situation. Hope you feel better soon.
  15. Update: saw my NP and Nut today. The after examination the NP doesn't believe the pain I'm having is an indication of a complication (leak, infection, etc.). But she did say it is most like because I'm full of it I'm not going frequently enough, and this is what can happen. So I have to help things along more often. Picked up more MOM, some Miralax, and it was time to get another bottle of Benefiber. She said take an evening and then a morning does of MOM to get rid of the back up/residual poo. This will be fun! I'm going to start adding Miralax to my water once a day. Hopefully this takes care of the issue. The Nut cleared me for real food! The meat I can have is anything except beef, pork, or lamb. For another couple of months at least...start with the easy to digest stuff. So now I feel like I have so many options, it's kind of funny. What will I have for dinner tonight? After I work up to a 4 oz. serving, then add veggies and fruits. Also ditch the protein shakes at that point because I'll be getting enough from the foods. happy happy

  18. @@DevineMissM I wish I had an answer, lol. I don't even really want to eat or drink because it's uncomfortable. I wish I could say that slowing down my eating helped (which I though was all ready slow - putting down the spoon, etc). Am I swallowing air? It's like, where are these burps coming from I'll be sure to post a follow up after my appt. tomorrow afternoon. Hope you're doing ok!
  19. I go in for my 4 week check up tomorrow. The only issue I've been having for a few days is unpredicable stomach pains (gas?). I *think* it's becuase I'm full, but it's happened at some odd times, i.e. when I haven''t had anything to eat or drink for a little while. The pains can be really unconfortable, making it hard to take a normal breath. If not all ready standing, I have to stand up and walk around. Lots of times I burp a few times, things grumble, and it eventually subsides but it takes a while. I've also noticed I have to eat less. For example, used to eat 4 oz of greek yogurt, or 4 oz of blended Soup. I can still manage the Soups (mostly), but with yogurt I can only get down 2oz before I don't want it and start to get a full feeling. Then I burp and say, that's it! I do eat very slowly, with tiny bites. I've slowed things even more, hoping it would help, but no. I'm hoping it's just that my stomach is healing and I'm starting to feel more. What's disconcerting is that when I get this pain, it's on the left side, just below the ribs, also up under ribs and left boob. I thought left side pain was potentially a problem...but I'll know tomorrow. I was really hoping I'd get moved on to the next food stage (mushies). Fingers crossed! Oh ,and to make things even more enjoyable - TMI warning - my visitor is back after only 2.5 weeks. sigh. Comes along with WLS I guess :-)

    Post op 6 days

@@lisalaufenberg for what it's worth, I struggled with nausea post-op. It was an acid issue, and my PPI was increased and it took care of the issue. I'm alittle surprised you weren't put on a PPI immediately following surgery. Seems to be status quo from what I've read. But I know they all do things a little differently. WIshng you a speedy resolution! good luck

Contact your surgeon. He/she can address nausea. Either anti-nausea meds to get you through, or it could be acid (are you on a PPI?). But you really should call right away. You need to be able to get your fluids in, or you'll become dehydrated. Please let us know how you make out. Hope it's a simple fix!

    Question!

Welcome to the journey! I was a BMI of 37 and change when I started. My comorbidities are what allowed me to qualify. When I asked my NP about going below 35 prior to surgery, I was told that my insurance (BCBS-MA) goes by the weight when you start. But there are those that won't approve it if you go below it before surgery. So it's a good question! (note, mine did not require the 6 month supervised dieting) Either talk to your bariatric coordinator (they should know since they deal with these insurance co's) or call you provider and ask the question. It would seem really stupid and mean to have you diet for 6 months and then penalize you for losing weight! But then again, some of the crazy stories I've read about ins. co's...nothing would surprise me. Best of luck!
  23. I was sleeved on 8/14 (3 weeks ago yesterday). I'm down 10lbs. since surgery. (yay!). I did struggle terribly with nausea and vomiting post op. Then once taken care of during my stay, shortly after I started with some bad bad bad stomach pains. Did a ESD and everything was ok except I now had acid reflux (explained the pain). Doubled up my PPI and have been problem free since then. liquids go down much better - noticed that in the past couple of days. So drinking my Water isn't taking the full day to get in 64oz (plus my shakes). My surgeon's plan is 4 weeks on full liquids. Last week NUT told me I can puree lentil and black bean Soups. YUM! 4 oz is all I can handle. Guess it doesn't go through as quickly (it's thick). But happy to get a full feeling, it's helping me understand my sleeve. Next week is my 4 week check up and I expect to move on to the the soft food phase. Can't wait! The only thing I struggle with is not being regular and having to take MOM to get things going. I am using Benefiber in my shakes. It's not enugh I guess, or maybe things will change once I'm off liquids. Would like my energy to return, but I know it's still early. Exercising (e.g. walking 2 miles) is a chore. Oh, almost forgot, I'm off my diabetes meds (metformin). My blood sugars have been between 90 - 120's. My A1C will be checked in two weeks at my PCP appt. Will see if I can stay off them (fingers crossed). Over all I'm extremely happy I did this, even though I had a little bit of a rough start.

    Raving about Graham Elliot

@@auntiemel Thanks for posting the article. Just don't read the comments unless you want to get irritated - there are some reallly narrow minded people out there. (SMH)
  25. Mine was very similar to what folks have all ready mentioned, except I'd all ready gone through the pre-op appts and had a date. I'll just add that now is the perfect time to ask our questions - write them down so you don't forget any. If you have questions about your surgeon, now's the time to ask: how many of x procedure have you performed? What's your complication rate? And leaks - how far out and why, or (gulp) deaths? Things like that are hard to find out about an individual surgeon on-line. You want to feel as confident with them, and them with you being a good WLS candidate. Remember, he may be evaluating you for surgery, but you should also be evaluating him/her. good luck!!
