Made it through Thanksgiving...no cheating!
Mommabird replied to Vabeachlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still pre-op (surgery on 12/10) I made it through fixing the meal with no problems. I even made it through the eating of the meal (I had a half cup of green beans and a protein shake). It was afterwards that I ran into problems. I walked into the kitchen to clean up afterwards and just turned around and walked back out. Told my husband that I just couldn't handle all that food. He had everyone fix a plate of leftovers to put in the fridge for dinner and then proceeded to put up the rest of the food and then washed all the dishes! I really love that man! ???? -
Dec 10th for me ????

I guess I just got lucky. My final weigh-in was on 11/11. Got my medical clearance by the surgeon's office on 11/17. Paperwork arrived at the insurance company the afternoon of 11/20 and I got the approval call the next morning 11/21. I was given my surgery date on 11/25. My surgery date is 12/10. I started my pre-op diet the same day that I found out my date. My head is still spinning!

Anyone Else On Liquid Diet For Thanksgiving?
Mommabird replied to hajones5891's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have time to have an early Thanksgiving dinner. I found out my surgery date on Tuesday and was told "by the way, your pre-op diet starts NOW" I don't think anyone in the surgeon's office thought I would get approved as fast as I did. From medical clearance by the Dr to insurance approval was 4 days. -
I started today by making the hour long drive to Killeen to take my soon to be daughter in law to her first OB appointment as my son couldn't get off work and Jackie wanted to have a bonding time with me. The appointment was very exciting as we got to see the baby on the ultrasound. Jackie was astonished with how much the baby was moving around. After lunch, (you can do a lot of bonding over Olive Garden's Soup, salad and breadsticks!) I had a message to call Jordan. Now, I happen to know that Jordan is the one who sets up all the surgery appointments so I was very excited. I figured with Thanksgiving being in just two days and the pre-op diet being two weeks that he was calling to tell me my surgery wold be towards mid to late December. What I didn't expect was for Jordan to tell me that my pre-op diet started NOW! It seems that I'm having surgery on December 10th! So, no Thanksgiving dinner foe me (except green Beans that are on my pre-op list). Also, no eating at the family reunion (except salad with no dressing but a little vinegar). And did I mention that my sister from North Carolina is coming to visit and she arrives three days before my surgery! And she always brings pulled pork BBQ!!!. But I have a December 10th surgery date so its all good! Besides, I happen to like my Protein shakes!

This Has Been Quite a Day!
Mommabird replied to Mommabird's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to admit that today hasn't been fun. I take a water aerobics class from 8-9 AM weekdays. This morning, by 8:20, my stomach was growling! It's going to be a long two weeks but worth every minute of pre-op! -
This Has Been Quite a Day!
Mommabird replied to Mommabird's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I found out that my surgery date and pre-op at about 2:00 yesterday afternoon and ended up going out for Mexican food last night and then I sampled the pies that my daughter bought from the Culinary School. But I woke up at around 4:15 this morning ready to get started. I have a history of very fatty liver and pancreas so I know that the pre-op is particularly important for me to follow. I'm just relieved that I managed to improve my labs values enough to only have to do two weeks. When I started this back in May, the surgeon told me that I would probably have to do the pre-op diet for three weeks! -
If you weren't obese "all" of your life, what is it that caused you to become obese ?
Mommabird replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
For me, it was starting on birth control pills. They kicked off an uncontrollable weight gain. Decades later, I found out that what they actually kicked off was a hormone disorder called PCOS. Years of getting diets from doctors only to gain more weight on them. Once I was diagnosed, I was able to lose some pounds, but by then the damage had been done. Morbid obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and arthritis. -
WooHoo! I get to join the party! Just found out this afternoon that my surgery date is December 10th! I was told to start my pre-op immediately.
-
Can I join all this December fun? I just found out a little earlier today that my surgery will be on the 10th! By the time I found out, I had eaten breakfast and lunch and today is day one of pre-op dieting. I guess I got bonus meals! now it's all about protein shakes and non starchy veggies!

Thanksgiving on pre-op liquids
Mommabird replied to Vabeachlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I replied to this thread and mentioned the pumpkin spice syrup in a shake as something "Thanksgiving-ish" Little did I know when I posted that, that will be my Thanksgiving flavor! I got a call from the clinic a little while a go telling me that my surgery will be on December 10th and got an "Oh, by the way, your pre-op diet starts NOW" ! -
Thanksgiving on pre-op liquids
Mommabird replied to Vabeachlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found pumpkin pie flavored sugar free syrup in the coffee section of Target. Added to a vanilla shake, it gives the illusion of pumpkin pie. I've been approved but don't have my date yet. I'd love to be on my pre-op diet for Thanksgiving!! -
I'm doing a major happy dance all over the place! Less than 12 hours after Aetna received my paper work, I've been APPROVED! Now I'm just waiting to hear from the surgeon's office about my surgery date.

You can't see me, but
Mommabird replied to Mommabird's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oops, wrong button! I was told that my paperwork would be submitted by Thursday. I started calling Aetna twice a day starting Tuesday. On my second call on Thursday, I managed to get a wonderful rep who, while I was on the phone, pulled all my paperwork out of the faxes that had been received and put them together into a packet and sent it to the powers that be. If not for her, I'd still be waiting! -

Doctor says he wouldn't let his own sister have rny!
Mommabird replied to bellabloom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My former (as of last week) endocrinologist is middle eastern (southern India) and he tried to talk me out of my RNY last week. He was telling me all about the bad things that would happen to me if I did it. However, he didn't change my mind! -
Sorry, I don't know why I thought you were with Aetna! However, you might want to go to the thread I mentioned for the link to the patient advocate.

I saw my Endocrinologist this past Monday (the 10th). This is just my second time to see him, my other Endo. retired earlier this year. At my first appointment., he was SO supportive of my having RNY. Would do whatever he could to help me thru the process. Last Monday, I really thought for a while that he had another patient's chart from the way he was talking. Saying that RNY was bad, bad, BAD!!! that it wasn't going to help my type 2 diabetes becuase "I'm too well controlled" and it would do nothing for my insulin resistance! Then he turns around and wants me to go on "CholestOff" to lower my LDL cholesterol as it's "too high and he's seeing an upward trend." My LDL has been coming down the last three tests and I'm only two points away from being in the "optimal" range. He also wants me on 5000 IU of vit. D and 2500-5000 mcg of sub-lingual B-12 a day. Both of those tested well into the normal range! He also wants me to double my diabetes medicine that the previous Endo had halved due to a bad reaction I started having from it. The he dictated a diet for me with three meals and three Snacks and told me to eat even if I wasn't hungry! I've spent the week trying to figure out just what the heck is going on with him! Today I went to the Bariatric Clinic to get my medical clearance for my RNY. (I got it and everything is being sent to Aetna for approval! YIPPEE!!!) I told the nurse practitioner about the appointment last week and showed her the print out the Endo gave me with all the meds and the diet listed. Needless to say , she is Very puzzled. She even asked me if I thought he had the wrong chart! (he didn't) She has vetoed all of it! Told me that I would be closely monitored and supplemented beyond the norm only if I needed it. So, was he just trying to discourage me from having RNY? Or is he nuts? One thing I do know, I won't be seeing him again! Luckily, he is leaving the practice at the end of the year and my next appointment isn't until April!

I am so sorry to hear you were denied. I wish that I had some advice to give you. There is a thread on the pre-op board titled "I was Denied" dealing with Aetna. In one of the posts, there is a link to an advocacy group that helped one person one the thread get her denial overturned. I have to admit, posts like yours saying that Aetna denied you're surgery really stress me. I'm waiting to hear from Aetna myself. Hearing about them denying people doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling!!

If you can, check your blood sugar. It could be a hypoglycemic reaction to the sugars and starchy carbs.

I know why he's leaving. He's been driving around an hour each way to the clinic from Austin to Temple. (About the same distance as I am). He was going to move closer to the clinic but his daughter was accepted to the University of Texas so he wants to stay in Austin. It doesn't excuse the way he acted or what he said. He's made my next appointment with a colleague who he says is "very smart ”. I think I may cancel it and pick another doctor from the list that I won't feel like has the same views as he does. My Endo that retired was wonderful! He's the one who originally suggested RNY.

What's your opinion of these Celebrate Vitamins (capsules)?
Mommabird replied to Okiebon's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My doctor recommends the Celebrate Vitamins. I have to take the chewable for six weeks, but then I can switch to the capsules. I'll be taking the chewable Multi-Complete, the Calcium Plus 500 and the B-12 Sub-lingual Quick Melt. Pre-op, I'm using Centrum Adult and Citracal calcium (1200mg calcium plus D) also on my doctors recommendations.
