    bad breath

i am 5+ weeks out from surgery and i am so tired of hearing about my bad breath. i've read that it is because of the diet we are on or could it be from the healing of the stomach (granulation tissue)? when my son had his tonsils out...he had about 2 weeks of disgusting breath too. is this the same thing? but after 5 weeks....i'm afraid to go anywhere w/o a wad of gum in my mouth. when does this end?
  2. i also tried to do a bike ride last week and i noticed how weak i felt. before surgery i used to bike for miles....and this last ride was a real struggle. trying to up the Protein. alot of Proteins are just not appetizing to me right now. the surgery killed my liking for coffee. used to drink like 8 cups a day and now i can't even look at it... wonder why this surgery changes our taste?
  3. before my surgery....my nutritionist said we were never going to be able to eat regular Soup because the liquid in the soup will wash away the contents of the soup. since it is now fall ....and i am 5+ weeks postop...i am dying for just some regular soup....like italian wedding soup or chicken noodle with soft veggies and chicken. is anybody else eating regular soup and how are they doing wit that? what were you guys told about soup?

Post op surgery Was sept 24

right??? you can take 10 giant pills...but don't eat any tiny piece of meat. the only soup that is hard is clam chowder because you really can't chew the clams into pieces. i am going to try little bites of steak today with mashed potatoes.

wow...you are doing great!!! you can eat ALOT of stuff they told me NOT to eat. meatballs? soup?? pepperoni?? is any of that food not sitting right with you? i'm tired of eating this pureed crap and have been advancing little by little. i even had a piece of a turkey sub yesterday that was like 1 inch big and that was it and i did fine...felt fine. i think my doctor's office is being really way too over protective. i am dying for some good soup to eat. nutritionist said not to eat soup because the liquid will wash the food away. did they say anything about that to you?
  6. LOL...i'm also a "cody's mom"....wow....i don't get why they said no soup. they were telling me that 3 months preop....not to eat soup...or to eat the contents and not the liquid. i don't get why there are so many different rules from different doctors. i'm getting frustrated and i feel like i'm just going to eat whatever i want. i get it about the chips and pointy foods...that would make sense. i HAVE eaten 1 or 2 doritos....just chewed them up good.
  7. hey change it up....i am 5 weeks out...i am supposed to eat what you are too....but like you...i'm sick of that stupid list of 10 foods to eat and nothing else. yogurt and cottage cheese are dairy products...so apparently you CAN have dairy. i hate yogurt and the Protein shakes are just so gross sometimes. i tried eggs, ricotta cheese with spaghetti sauce, ricotta cheese with s/f blueberry sauce, refried Beans with l/f sour cream and taco sauce, chicken, tuna, fish, and creamed Soups. everything gets blah so fast. 4 or 5 bites of something and i'm done. have you made s/f pudding at all?? i made s/f chocolate pudding and put chocolate Protein powder in it. not too bad... i have to admit...i have been trying bites of other foods here and there...ham deli meat, turkey deli meat, cheese from a pizza, pretty much anything i make for my family...i will take a bite or 2 of it and see what happens. if you chew anything enough times...it'll be pureed. my next f/u visit is next week and i know the next phase is pretty much the same as this one....YUCK...i'm going to be inching along faster than that because the diet is just so ridiculous. by christmas...we should almost be able to eat everything again. i don't understand the discrepancy between all these different doctor's diet...why some can eat and some can't...there should be a standard rule of thumb...and if there isn't....them there's nothing stopping us from advancing our own diet little by litte.
  8. 1 month out today and i'm only down 22 pounds. i lost more weight doing the beer and cigarettes diet after my divorce 15 years ago. what the hell?? i am suspecting that i am getting my period since i skipped it last month after surgery....but for as little as i am eating (probably 500 calories)....i can't believe the scale is not going faster. any words of encouragement out there??
  9. lost 2 more pounds..so i guess i just need to be more patient!
  10. thanks everyone. i guess i thought i would lose more...i don't know. i am not a patient person....hence...the reason why i never succeeded at weight watchers. i expect immediate results from sacrifices being made. because i eat SO little...like tablespoons of food....i thought the weight would drop off like a dead leaf. i do realize now that heavier people will lose faster. i really need to stop complaining and comparing...having a bad couple of days and maybe it is PMS time and i'm feeling blah. my clothes do feel looser, so that's a positive thing. you guys are amazing. thanks for the support. this website is the greatest!

    Two Week Plateau?

are you still on pain pills?? as soon as i stopped them...which was almost at the 3-week mark...i was able to go like normal.
  12. greg....here is what i found on another's site...makes sense...so we can stay positive!! A "stall" a few weeks out is inevitable, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a saber tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

    Two Week Plateau?

    wow...what a great explanation...who knew???
  14. i don't get why that is....i will be 3 weeks tomorrow. i have been losing about 0.5 to 1 pound a day so far, but the last 2 days i have stayed the same. how can we not lose when we are eating barely 600 calories a day AND walking. i can only think that it may be Water gain from a period or salt...but even so... it doesn't make sense. i have lost 19 pounds since day of surgery.
  15. i am 2 weeks out and i am still have tremendous burning pain at the right incision site. i was vomiting after surgery and don't know if this is causing me more pain now. after vomiting...i could barely get out of bed as the pain was so bad on the right side. after 2 weeks, though, i am still holding my side, still doubling over at times and it is constantly burning, even when sitting. is this normal?
  16. thanks...i did get a refill of pain pills...she gave me 12. big whoop. i was kinda like you a little where i'd walk and think...hey no pain, but then it shows up. hopefully, it'll be gone in another week totally.
  17. i am 2 weeks out today and i still have terrible pain in the one trocar site on the right where they took the stomach out. i had vomiting after surgery and i don't know if that made things worse, but i am doubled over sometimes still in pain with burning that radiates to my right flank/back. still on pain pills and waiting to be pain free.

    Puree Meal Ideas

thanks for the idea GummyTummy. i had crock-potted shredded chicken with some gravy last night and that also did not sit well. i don't know what's going on. i still tasting it in my gut this morning. i know i am not eating more than 1/4 cup of anything. my whole taste palate is totally off. i used to be an avid coffee drinker and now i can't even think about coffee w/o feeling sick. so far since surgery almost 2 weeks ago....the only thing that i really loved was the carnation no-sugar added Breakfast drinks. hope things get better.

    Puree Meal Ideas

i have been on the pureed plan for 5 days. so far, i've done ricotta cheese with spaghetti sauce, ricotta cheese with sugar-free blueberry sauce, cream of wheat, shredded chicken with gravy, tuna with mayo, some scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese. i can only eat so little....i make one serving and it lasts me for 3 or 4 meals. i also bought baby food just for fruits so i don't have to puree this stuff. exploring every day with all kinds of stuff to see what i can mash up. have not done mashed potatoes yet, but probably will eventually.

    Question one week tomorrow!

we were told to get 98% f/f cream soups. they are not so bad. i just strained out the mushrooms for the cream of mushroom soup. have not done the cream of chicken yet. i am only getting down 2 shakes a day and maybe half a pudding cup. i hated yogurt before and now i REALLY hate it. just tastes even worse.

    Question one week tomorrow!

i've been doing sugar-free pudding with Protein powder. yogurt makes me gag...trying some now and my stomach is gurgling like crazy. i will be one week out tomorrow and getting my staples out. i find that F/F creamed soups are quite tasty and comforting and i have been using carnation no sugar added protein shakes. they taste so much better than that clumpy Protein Powder crap i bought. i add 1 tbsp of instant decaf coffed dissolved in hot Water to the shake to make it a cafe mocha flavor. no problem getting those down.
  23. OMG....88 pounds in 4.5 months???? that would be a dream come true for me. i did alot of vomiting after the surgery as well...the Protein shakes are just not appealing at all. i think at week 1, i move on to pureed food. it's okay tho....not feeling hungry for anything is a blessing. hope i am as successful as you all are. i have only heard positive feedback from people that have had this procedure done. they wouldn't go back for nothing. excited for my future!
  24. me too....5 days postop. i've been sipping this Protein shake for 2 hours....i made decaf iced tea with sweet-n-low and that's not so bad. Soups are not too bad either. i am down 10 pounds since wednesday. still a little nauseous and sore in the abdomen. looking forward to the next phase.
  25. wow...that's amazing. i hope i am that successful when i get m surgery in september.
