    Post Op June 2014 Sleevers

I am def going through some buyers remorse. They did my sleeve and fixed a hernia while I was in. I don't know if that means the insurance will cover some of the surgery now (I was self pay) so any thoughts or advice on that is appreciated!! Once they rolled me out of surfer I pretty much don't remember anything from the first 6-7 hours post op. Hubby says I was talking but would fall asleep mid sentence. They then take your bed away and make you lay in this surprisingly comfortable recliner. I was up pretty much every hour to walk because it was the only thing that relieved the gas pain and nausea. Everytime I thought I was going to vomit, I really just needed to burp. My advice to those about to do this surgery- when in doubt, walk it out!! Each time I would walk the pain got better, I got stronger the nausea went away. Granted, it always came back an hour or two later but then I would walk again. The morning after they take you down to radiology where you do a barium swallow- which again made me try to vomit but I only needed to really burp. They also have you do breathing games after each walk. For some reason or another these really tire you out but they do help you cough up flem so they are important. They send you home with the breathing game as well. Before I left I chose to take a shower which was heavenly! The nurses helped me quite a bit which I thought would be awkward but it wasn't. After the shower my doc came in and went over post op meds to be filled and his expectations at home. All of my pills have to be crushed and my pain meds are all liquid so that's nice. The only meds he has me on is ondancetron (pill I am crushing for nausea), hydrocodone/Tylenol (for pain but comes liquid) and sucralfate( comes as a liquid but haven't taken it yet). My first attempt at pain meds at home made me vomit. My sleeve really let me know it got too full by making me immediately hyper salivate and retch a wee bit. Not so fun!! So anyways here is a summary of my tips for those about to go in: 1) walk walk walk walk. If you hurt in any way try walking first and then ask for meds after. It really does help 2) bring your own pillow! 3) don't be shy- the nurses will gladly help if you ask. Literally for anything. Also- when I got there I told my anesthesiologist I was really nervous (I cried) so he was super nice and gave me some good meds before surgery to calm my nerves. 4) ice chips are your friend, they help with the dry mouth. 5) tell your doc if you need meds for nausea! Originally he wasn't going to send me home with any but when I ask he happily gave them to me. 5) drink slow, really really slow. 6) bring slip on shoes Well that's all I can think of for now. I'm on some pretty great pain meds so sorry if some of it doesn't make sense or I repeated myself! Feel free to private message me if you have anymore questions!!!

That's frustrating! I hope it gets better soon !

    Headed to the hospital!

Thanks for all the well wishes. Waiting for my surgeon to get here. It takes an army to move me because of all the things I'm hooked up to. I'm nervous of course and I cried again but my anesthesiologist will be here soon and the nurses said they will give me something for anxiety. The heperin shot in my belly didn't hurt but that's the reason I had to get here 2 hours early. Practiced my breathing with that funny breathing tube game (don't remember it's real name). Anyways- just thought I would chronicle what they have you do preop. Bring something to keep you occupied. For me, it's this app on my phone. See y'all on the flip side (aka recovery).
  7. I have surgery in two days and it never occurred to me to ask my surgeon when I could go back to full activities until my husband asked me tonight. I'm guessing 8 weeks like exercising??

Seabrook here, happy I found this site ! Anyone use Dr. Alanis in league city?
  11. So I have been pretty busy at work and haven't had time to think about surgery. Now that it's two days away it's all I think about and on the way home today I just started crying. Mainly I think it was fear but some of it was disappointment that I ever got to the point where surgery is the only fix. I know being nervous about surgery is normal, I guess I just didn't anticipate how emotional this journey is. Now that I can't go eat my feelings my whole world was flipped upside down. Anyways, I hope I am not the only one who felt like this before surgery.
  12. I did a lot of research on my surgeon and I really like him but I am only suppose to stay in the hospital for one night. Surgery is 9:30am on June 11th and I get discharged the next day after a barium swallow to check for any leaks. Anyone else similar? Just starting to freak out a bit because I'm watching you tube videos of people who stayed in for 3 days. Anyone with a similar experience that could put my mind at ease would be helpful!!!

  16. I no longer care to go to the movies because I can't enjoy the popcorn....lol. I guess I never realized how much my life revolved around food. This whole time I thought I went for the movies but turns out, I guess not. Anyone else stop other activities or find other things like this?

    6/12/14 - Sugery Buddies Needed

I am a veterinarian and I do surgery every day on animals and I keep having this stupid recurring nightmare where I am awake during anesthesia for my own surgery. It's so silly seeing as I know full and well how anesthesia drugs work but none the less I keep having it. That's the most irritating part is worrying about the surgery. The pre op diet has been pretty good so far. I am not really concerned about the post op diet since I know I won't have a choice in the matter (or at least that's how I think about it). I keep hoping I'll be one of the lucky ones who feels great 2-3 days post op! When I get really stressed or thinking about it I go and look at before and after pics which really help my mind switch to wishful thinking. I also wonder if my tastes will change like people say. So many what ifs.... It's exciting and Scary all at once. Have you ever had any surgery befor? I'm hoping they give me some kind of anti anxiety medication before they knock me out! -Michelle

    6/12/14 - Sugery Buddies Needed

Hello! I am having my surgery June 11th. I'm 285, 28 years old and live in Houston Texas. I am married but no kids yet (someday!). I've been stalking around the boards for a while and pretty freaked out about surgery. How are you feeling about it?
  20. I know I am jumping the gun as tomorrow is the first day in June but I just wanted to ask anyone having surgery in June to post on here their post op experiences. I am having surgery the 11th so everyone before me- I can't wait to hear your experience, pain levels, advice etc! So far I was told to: 1) take my own pillow to the hospital 2) bring Chapstick 3) get up and walk as soon as they let me post op 4) try broth or G2 if Water doesn't sit well after surgery 5) Stay positive because this too shall pass! Anyways- best of luck to all those June sleevers! Let me know if we need to bring something else with us on our journey! Can't wait to see how your surgeries go!

I'm so sorry! That sounds like a nightmare to deal with. I don't know if your a religious person but I am and truly believe everything happens for a reason. We may never know why but there is a bigger plan, just keep your head up and be proud of the work you have done so far! Big hugs!!!

    HOUSTON Sleevers?

I went to true results for my initial consultation but found a surgeon I better fit with closer to seabrook where I live. I really liked them though. They were very nice on my initial consultation. My sleeve is June 11th and I'm a little terrified and A LOT excited! Who is your surgeon? Dr. Hollis? I heard good things about him!
