  3. Has anyone tried the Jawbone Up 24 bracelet and app. I just got it last week. It's awesome. It tracks your movements and lets you know if you've reached your daily goal. It tracks your sleep pattern and lets you know how much actual sleep you're getting (not enought). The app (downloadable on both android and smart phones) has a scanner that will scan barcodes and add calories, protein, carbs as well as other nutrients and give you a breakdown. It also has a social media piece attached to it so if anybody has the app let me know and we can connect to provide some additional encouragement.

  4. Down 36 pounds now since one week preop 4/4/14. Was hoping for more but being realistic the 36lbs down is pretty good. I would love to be out of the 300s by the end of June. I'm optimistic but, can it be done?

  5. piercedqt78 good for you in taking control of your medical situation. Doctor's go to school to diagnose and teach not learn how to be god. So if they attempt to act like time to move on.....
  6. had my first fill on Friday. Don't think it went too well. Dr. wanted me to drink water to make sure it went down while he made adjustments. I had really hard burps forming which distracted from my ability to sense if the water was going down. Or maybe I was just nervous about the process. not sure how many cc I got. Dr. says if there is not weight loss by the end of the week we'll try again.

  7. Dining Out and Small Victories: Yes, there are small victories that overshadow the number on the scale. Today was my first day eating out. My siblings and I took mom out to dinner for Mother's Day (and no I did not monitor her bite sizes....just mine). The restaurant we went to, make the best onion ring appetizers in town...or so we think. My family would have opted out of getting them for my sake but, I gotta learn how to do this eventually so, what better time than the present. I encouraged them to go for it. Of course when they brought them out the waiter sat the dish directly in front of me to savor its delicious aroma...and I did. Surprisingly, that was enough. The family enjoyed the onion rings and I enjoyed them enjoying the onion rings. And then for another first I ordered something totally different from my usual fare, which we won't ruminate on right now. So, my meal (lunch size) consisted of grilled salmon on a bed of rice (my rice was quickly shuffled off to my sister's plate), steamed broccoli, and black beans. Although the salmon was delicious I only finished a third of it and had room left for three broccoli florets and a spoon of black beans....no water yet...that was hard. Still trying to adjust to the water regimen. The remainder of the meal was packed away in the appropriate container and brought home to enjoy for at least two more meals. All in all I'd say it was a very successful dining out experience.

    been stuck twice since being banded in April 2014. For me it feels like food is stuck at the top of my esophagus. The first time it was because I ate something I should not have...potato chips...I know really dumb. The second time was because I wasn't being mindful to chew my food well. I was talking to my sister and knew the moment I swallowed that I had made a huge mistake. But, I survived.
  10. Cupcakebaby,, congrats on your pending nuptials. Happy to hear your story. I'm on board with healthynewme, This is a journey and should be categorized as the scenic route. The scenic route has its value in that we pick up information along the way. This definitely should be a reflective journey allowing us to pick up bits of insight regarding our relationship with food and lack of activity. Hopefully in gaining insight we can destroy all the excuses that halted progress in the first place and sustain whatever successes we earn THE HARD WAY. So Banders and other WLS recipients happy trails and enjoy the view.

  12. I can relate. I didn't tell anybody at work (except one of the nurses just in case of emergency) and thought twice about telling my BFF basically for the same reasons. I didn't want the constant observations. I know it will come and i will get questions but, I think you handled it very well. You told the truth. That is what I planned to do. You are absolutely right the band is a tool for constant accountability to keep us focused. We can still override it and revert back to our old ways.. On Easter Sunday my niece took a picture of me with the dog and posted it on Facebook. It was not very flattering and I looked huge. I was comforted by the fact that in a few months I can post a new and improved picture with less of me. So don't worry about people remembering that you were a big girl. Just let them be amazed. Good to hear of your success and keep up the good work.
  13. Hi Tasha and Terisis, I was banded on 4/11/14 felt the same about surgery. Second guessed myself all the way to the hospital but know I needed an intervention. I like my surgeon who is well experienced in banding. The anesthesiologist came in and talked to me and assured me all was well. The doctor came in to check on me and assured me he was on it and would take good care of me. the nurses were pleasant and because it was an Adventist hospital a chaplain came in to pray with me. After they got me into the operating room and gave me the meds in my IV, I was all good. It was like getting on an airplane. I trusted the pilot (and God) to get me to my destination and always arrived safely. So be encouraged and see this as the beginning of your journey. My doctor had me on a high Protein diet and I didn't get hungry. I'm still doing high protein and only eat when I feel hunger pangs and even then I don't need a lot. Not even nearly as much as I use to....at all. So far I've lost 28lbs. It hasn't been a month yet....I'm stoked.

    Short, I'm really sorry to hear of your traumatic experience but glad you were able to get it taken care of quickly. Your fears are valid its what you do with them now that you recognize and acknowledge what it is. I am a woman of faith and believe that if God has brought you this far he's definitely not going to leave you now. Look for the message in your situation I'm sure it will be profound. As for the future,,,,remember the band was a tool. The mind is an awesome tool as well use it to your advantage. You learned how to eat differently when you had the band. 2 1/2 year is a long time to experience a change in habit. Keep doing what you were doing. if necessary psych yourself out to believe that the band is still there. You're already a success!! Best wishes and prayers being sent your way.

  16. Old habits tend to want to die hard. While eating chicken stir fry I forgot to chew, chew, chew...I was distracted talking to my sister. As soon as I took the first swallow came the thought Oh No I didn't chew which was shortly followed by the uncomfortable revelation. So now I'm kinda stuck, Again.....Reflection: Never really took time to notice much about the food I was eating other than the taste. Didn't really savor the taste because it went down too fast. Never really recognized the moment of being satiated while zooming head on into feeling stuffed. In actuality, now the more I chew the less I like what I'm chewing. I now imagine that since eating is a life sustaining activity it deserves as much cognition as any other life sustaining/promoting activity. I can appreciate the immediate consequences of my actions or in this case lack of concentration, it helps keep me on track. Now to remember to apply this lesson on a regular basis.

      Has happened to me soo many times. It's just like eating Talapia - my baby stomach just won't allow me to do it. All of these are lessons learned and habits that must be ingrained in order to eat and have a healthy conversation. Good luck to all of us on this journey!

  17. Close Call. Went to work tonight and found someone had brought in some delicious looking brownies. The first thought from the old thinking pattern was just cut a corner off and enjoy. But, from old experience I know the corner would have just been the start of the relationship with the brownie. Fortunately the new thought patterns kicked in and reminded me of the subtle seduction of a nut filled brownie. Then I remembered I had a protein bar, mint chocolate with 19 grams of protein. Now that was a great trade off.

      Great choice!! It's the little victories that mean so much!! Last Sunday was my FIRST time in my life that i ate at Golden Corral and DIDNT have a dessert and DIDNT feel like I needed someone to roll me out cause I was so full!! A total waste of money!!! They wouldn't accept the lapband card. It was totally worth it not to feel full and miserable!!

  18. Girl watch out for those haters. Next time just say "thanks for noticing" Let that be your mantra. Cause they will soon be saying "oh wow, you're really loosing the weight". Don't beat yourself up. I think I have psych'ed myself out. I don't like throwing up. So I chew slowly and well. I swallow and wait to see if I get that acidic feeling in my throat then I keep going. My doc says I should only eat as much as I can hold in the palm of my hand. Once I get to that point I back off. He also said to only eat when I feel hunger so I wait for it. I've convinced myself (after all the reminders from the community) that the band is just a tool. I feel like it provides me a constant accountability partner. With any accountability partner you can listen to it or override it, which defeats the purpose. Just remember don't let the haters get you down cause they are waiting for signs of failure. I haven't really told a lot of people. No one on my job knows. I don't need the extra pressure. Family is in my corner and I have given them permission to pull my coat tail. We just need to be honest with ourselves and learn from the journey. But hang in there you will get to that sweet spot when all you have to do is coast on your journey. We'll be cruising in no time. We got this!!!

  20. Congratulations. We have the same Band Date. Sorry you had problems with the pain meds. I try to avoid if possible. You did good for your first few weeks. I'm down 20. My doc's practice is to wait six weeks before the first fill. I was kinda of glad because it gives me a bit of time to see what foods I can tolerate and get use to my band which is why he fills after six weeks. An If I'm loosing ok he won't need to fill. I can live with that. Keep us posted and remember to eat slow chew, chew, chew. It helps you identify your stop.

    Do any of you...

    I had to do the Adkins diet for seven days pre op. I lost 10 pounds. I thought the same thing, maybe I can do this on my own. Then I remembered I had tried Adkins in the past along with several others. I can loose the weight for a while but once I start back to my old diet could never seem to get on board again. The yoyo effect. I know the band is just a tool, sort of a constant accountability partner. But its the lifestyle change that we need to focus on. I hoping the band will help me solidify that lifestyle change. No matter what you choose its a journey and you get to choose your journey. Choose well grasshopper . Good luck and happy trails.
  23. It probably took you longer after surgery because of the swelling. I have to remember too not to drink so fast. My brother is banded and for him if he drinks after eating it all comes back up.
  24. I'm still trying to figure it out. I know it is partially due to stress, loneliness (when I lived alone), and control issues. I got to control what I ate. Sounds like and addict right, you take the first cookie and second cookie takes you. That is about right. I often binged on something I liked. giving myself the excuse that well I'll eat it all and then there will be no more temptation. How dumb is that. Might have worked if I never brought it again. But that little lying voice I allowed to tell me I had control... When I figure out the rest of the story I'll share it..... Happy trails

    4 days- what's normal?

    call or email your doc with your symptoms. It may just be the excess gas left over from surgery. It was put into the cavity to help with the visuals during surgery. It has to be reabsorbed back into the body and the best way to get that done is to move. If too painful take some of the pain meds they sent you home with. I went on youtube and found leslie sansone's 1 mile walk video.
