    Could use a little advice

I had a little bit of acid reflux but then found out I had a hiatal hernia. It was fixed when the sleeve surgery was done. No more acid issues - yay, I hope your friend gets good advice. My niece had a RNY about 3 years ago & when I told her what I was doing she came back with a bunch of stupid stuff about the sleeve surgery. I don't know where she got this info from but it wasn't true. I just ignored her. Glad I had the surgery.

    Protein

After surgery I used the Unjury chicken soup & had the same clumping issue. It definitely will not mix if the liquid is to hot. I still drink the chicken soup if I don't feel well but I don't heat the water to "hot". I do "warm". I then stir in the powder & when it is well mixed (no clumps) I put it back in the microwave & heat it some more. I don't like really hot food or drinks so foods that are "very warm" work well for me. BTW - I use a wire wisk & it works.
  3. I had scar tissue as well but my surgeon knew about it before surgery. I had my spleen removed in 1962 & it interfered getting to the liver. I also had to have a hiatal hernia fixed. All said & done, everything went well. Still glad I had this surgery.

    Isopure

I bought 4 bottles of different flavors & couldn't stand any of them. I ended up pouring them down the sink. Still makes me cringe thinking about it.
  5. I still drink a protein shake everyday & I order from various sources. I use Amazon, Unjury, Premier Protein & the Vitamin Shoppe for my Syntrax Nectur. Amazon's prices are in line with everyone else & if you have an Amazon account with Prime your shipping is free. A lot of it comes down to taste. I mix my protein powders with sugar free soy milk - can't stand mixed with water.

Am I eating enough to lose weight?

I'm always amazed at the difference of opinion all of us get from our doctors & NUTs. I was on 800 calories for about 6 weeks & then was raised to 1000 calories. I have found that carbs for me are very bad. They stop my weight loss. I use MyFitnessPal in my phone to track everything & then I transfer the info to my Diet Minder that I got from Amazon. I do this in the afternoon after lunch so I know what I can eat (or not eat) for dinner/snacks. This works well for me. I try not to have more than 50 carbs per day. On days when I have had 70+ carbs my weight will stall for a couple of days. I rarely get less than 60g of Protein per day. I also started logging in my Fiber. I was getting so little fiber I had to start chewing fiber wafers. With all that being said, I have trouble with exercise & Water. I'm lucky to get in 20 oz of water per day. Fortunately the other liquids I drink (protein drink) counts towards the 64 ozs. With exercise I have a real issue. I'm 70 & on oxygen 24/7. It's rather hard to get out and walk dragging around a portable oxygen tank. I go to the mall or Walmart or Target & walk around in those places for exercise. I know that's crazy but it beats sitting in a chair. Even losing a lot of weight I might not be able to get off the oxygen due to COPD (thanks to second hand smoke). I can always hope! I hope this helps you. Good luck on your weight loss. You won't regret it. I don't & I would do it again.
  7. I, too, use the Premier shake. I order mine on line & they come in 24 containers to a box. I like the chocolate & strawberry & switch back & forth. I haven't tried the vanilla. They also have a new flavor but I don't remember what it is. I'm on their email list & I got a request for what flavor I would like to see them make next. I chose chocolate/peanut butter. I also still drink 1 Protein shake a day. If I'm behind in my protein I will drink 2. I also use the unjury powder in strawberry sorbet. I tried mixing it in Water but couldn't stand it. I mix it with Vanilla, unsweetened almond milk. Yummy!! I think I will go and have some since I haven't had any today.
  8. I used Dr. Julie Kilgore. You will find her I Dr. Colleen Kennedy's office. I'm 70 & a heart patient with other issues so I wanted to be very careful who I chose. I originally called Dr. Nicholson's office but they do not take medicare anymore. They are the ones that told me to call Dr. Kennedy & gave me her number. Dr. Kennedy couldn't see me until March but Dr. Kilgore could see me sooner so I went with her since they share the same office. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Kilgore & the office staff. My surgery was at Baylor Plano. The experience was incredible. No complications or issues after surgery. I also attend the two support groups that the psychologist at Baylor Plano runs. One group meets once a month & the other meets every week. It is open to all bariatric patients regardless where you had your surgery done. Good luck finding a surgeon you really like. That is very important. Be sure & get in a support group too. Actually you can start visiting our support group before you have surgery. It would be worth your time.

    Too few calories?

My Fitness Pal tells me the same thing but I just ignore it. I go by what my doctor told me. I am only allowed 1000 calories per day. This was at my 6 week appt. Up to then I was allowed 800 calories. Sometimes I go over & get 1100 calories & other days I only get 800 calories. I keep a food journal & that keeps me on track. Good luck.
  10. Just keep doing your program. I have days where I don't lose anything or even gain a pound. I weigh everyday but I only track my weight on Mondays. This way I don't freak out over the lose/gain issue. Do you keep a food journal? I didn't at first & I have done much better since I started the journal. I got a DietMinder from Amazon & it tracks everything from food, Vitamins, Water & exercise. I also started reading a book on "keytones". I was told the sleeve diet ( by another Bariatric Pal member) is like the Adkins diet & when I thought about it I realized that this was true. I don't know if this issue with "keytones" is correct but I'm willing to try it. If it doesn't work I can go back to what I'm doing now, which isn't much different other than the amount of fat. I have increased my fat intake (who would ever think this was a good idea) & I'm careful with keeping my carb intake low. I still drink 1 Protein shake a day so that I do get all of my protein in. My biggest issue is with not drinking enough water & exercise. Remember, we are not all the same when it comes to how our bodies deal with weight loss. One day you will be so glad you did this. I'm at 4 months & I know my overall weight loss has been good but that's because I lost quite a bit in the first few weeks. I now average about 1 lb a week. I still think this was a good decision & I don't expect to hit my goal weight for 2 years. Good luck with your journey. Hopefully you get some more info from other Sleevers.

    i need help....

I spent 2 nights in the hospital & when I got home I was 10 lbs heavier - I was totally dumbfounded!! Thank goodness for this website. After reading what others had posted about this weight gain I felt better & a week later it was off. Thank goodness!!

    Let's talk about NSAIDs

I have been on Nabumatone, which is an NSAID, for several years due to arthritis. I can't take any aspirin products due to taking a blood thinner because of a heart issue. I can only take Tylenol. I was off the Nabumatone for about 6 weeks until I could start eating "regular" food. By that time my arthritis was giving me fits. I have not had any problems & my surgeon didn't say I couldn't take it. I see my internist/cardiologist next week so I will ask him since he is the prescribing doctor for the Nabumatone. I'm glad this subject came up.
  13. Unjury unflavored protein powder. My surgeon recommended it.

    Dailey Fat Allowance

Thanks so much for the info on fats. I never did the Adkins diet but I have seen on here that our diet is sort of based on Adkins like you said. I will now pay even closer attention to the type of carbs I eat. I try not to go over 50g. Thanks again.
  15. I have not been able to find out what the daily fat allowance should be. I know fat is necessary to some degree but what is the limit? I think I get to much fat. I have all the limits/requirements for calories, carbs, fiber & protein. These are the only things I track along with the fat. The only thing my surgeon & NUT told me to watch are calories & protein. The other 3 things I keep track of too. I have found carbs are a big issue. To many carbs & I don't lose weight. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
  16. Just remember that the weight loss with the Sleeve isn't as fast as those that have had the Gastric Bypass or Lap Band. This is fine with me. Gives your skin time to adjust. I have had several stalls & some days my weight will go up or down a pound. I looked at the average & in 16 weeks its been just over 3 pounds a week - that includes the post op diet. Right now I'm actually losing 1 to 2 lbs a week. I knew it wasn't going to be easy & I felt that if I lost 150 lbs in 2 years that would be great. It took more that 2 years to put it on!! Good luck with your journey & don't let it overwhelm you. Just keep on doing what you are supposed to & it will eventually come off.
  17. I drink 1 everyday & will for the rest of my life. I have a friend that had sleeve surgery about 3 years ago & she told me she drinks one everyday & she looks great. What amazes me is that she lost about 150 lbs & her skin doesn't sag a lot. The 30g I get in a shake is a good start for the day & I'm less likely to not get in all of my daily protein allotment.
  18. As they say, no question is stupid. A lot of foods contain a certain amount of Protein & you need to count it. Even tho' I'm on solid foods I still drink at least 1 shake a day. This helps making sure I get 60+ grams of protein. If you don't log in your food on something (even if it's just a sheet of paper) you won't be able to make sure you are hitting all of your daily requirements. I use MyFitnessPal on my cell phone. I always look up food before I eat it just to make sure it doesn't have some horrible carbs/fat in it, then I log it. Then, when can, I transfer this information to my DietMinder that I got from Amazon. In the afternoon I tally up all of my intake to make sure I'm getting everything I need & not over doing my calories & carbs. I know it's a bit redundant but this way I can just look something up from previous days. Trying to go back a few days on MyFitnessPal is a pain. My DietMinder also has a place for weight, exercise & Vitamins.
  19. I take the 5,000 mcp pill everyday for my hair & nails. I also get in 60+ grams of protein a day. I'm almost 4 months post op & I'm starting to have a tiny bit of hair loss. Who knows what another month will bring. I've been looking at wigs - lol

    Exercise

I'm terrible about exercising. I'm 70 & have to drag around oxygen so that is an issue - not the age but the oxygen. My daughter-in-law is a personal trainer so I called her & she said to start out with 1 lb ankle weights (I can put them on my wrist too) & just wear them around the house. After 2 or 3 weeks she said to up the weight to 2 lbs. I also do some leg exercises 2 - 3 times a day with the weights. Hopefully this helps with tightening up my muscles. Not sure what to do about the loose skin. I understand it takes about 2 years for your skin to sort of shrink back. Old people sag anyway so I'm not expecting to look like did when I was 20 something. Wishful thinking!!

    too many calories?

I was told 800 calories until I hit 6 weeks. At that point I was allowed 1000 calories. I generally get between 800 & 1000. A few times I got in 1100 calories. I also watch my carbs. I have to keep carbs under 50 grams for I don't lose. I still drink a shake in the morning for a snack to help make sure I get 60+ grams of protein. My big downfall is fluids. I'm not a water drinker so this is an issue. Still working on that.
  22. OK - what happened to the ticker information that was under "Patients"? I went to change my weight information & the only thing there is Blogs & Social Groups. When something works well why do they have to change it? One of my pet peeves.

    Just got home

It took me a couple of weeks to get past being tired all the time. I have seen other comments saying the same thing & I believe it's very common. I also was put on full liquids when I came home from the hospital & I wasn't very hungry either. Now I can eat pretty much anything I want (but I don't) & I get a very uncomfortable feeling when I get full. In my case the feeling is across the top of my stomach & I have learned not to ignore this feeling. If I eat to much I feel like crap for an hour or two. Good luck with your journey & welcome to the group.

    My fitness Pal

I ignore the message. I only use the MFP to look up food items & log them. This helps me to choose foods low in carbs & calories. I use my cell phone app for this & it does what I need. I then transfer the info to my DietMinder to keep track of food, Water & exercise.

    How many calories?

My surgeon started me out on 800 calories/day & at 3 months kicked it up to 1000 calories/day. I typically get between 800 - 1000 per day & every once in a while I get about 1100 calories. My biggest problem is with carbs. I have to keep it under 50 grams per day or the weight stalls. Everyone is different & so are the doctors orders. Good luck with your journey.
