  1. Hi guys, Im now 22, but have always been a fit and active teenager. At ages 20, I developed narcolepsy and the amount of exercise I could do in a day dropped dramatically thanks to always been insanely tired, and the medication I've been prescribed has side effects of weight gain. I'm now BMI 35, but since I developed narcolepsy I've tried to get back into my sport (which I do enjoy), gyms, personal trainers etc but I just can't do enough exercise to keep up with how much I eat and I'm worried that if I don't change something, I'll keep getting bigger and have worse health complications like diabetes etc. Has anyone got narcolepsy and has considered weight loss surgery? Thanks!
  2. Hi guys, (This post isn't meant to be pretty so don't say I didn't warn you) I'm now a week and a half post op, and I've only passed one solid stool, and the rest has been very watery diarrhea. I use to stay away from lactose based milks because of tummy upsets, but now I'm super sensitive to anything with lactose in it like up& go's (Australian Breakfast drink that comes in those juice boxes), yoghurts and even ICE CREAM Has this happened to anyone else? I thought I was going to have an issue with being constipated due to lack of fibre, not this horrible constant issue. thanks,
  3. Hey guys, I'm a postgrad med student from Australia (week and a half post op). From the research that I've looked at, and chatted to a few doctors about; it's all to do with your liver. Obese individuals have a condition which is called 'fatty liver' and involves fat accumulating around the liver which causes it to often cause sclerosis and a lot of scar tissue forming. This is because of our high fat & sedentary lifestyles, and it can cause the liver to become very brittle and 'break' or 'fall apart' easily if moved. During surgery, surgeons have to move the liver the get to the stomach, and the problem they had in the past was there was a high amount of liver damage from the surgery. Tons of research and experiments has been done where two weeks of a no/low fat & carb diet actually reduces the fat around the liver drastically. To sum it all up; Two week preop diet = reduced 'fatty liver' = much lower risk of complications during surgery = Sucky and difficult but definitely important and worth sticking with it
  4. Hey guys, I was sleeved on the 7th of April, and I'm at home now and the pain is subsiding with each passing day. I'm a little worried though... I'm still on fluids for another week but at the moment whenever I drink something, even the smallest sip, I feel it get stuck in my tummy and it feels really uncomfortable; it passes after a few seconds when my stomach kind of... Groans (actual groaning sound) and the liquid passes through. Anyone else have this problem? (I've noticed if I take a large gulp of Water I get the same feeling, but even the smallest sip will trigger it), will it pass ? Thanks,

Kinda like it getting stuck around my tummy region, and after a few seconds of discomfort my tummy groans and it passes. Should I be worried? Cheers,

    little worried

I'm also on my 6th day post op; but I'm still unable to get a whole glass of anything down.... I kinda get this feeling of it getting caught around my tummy region and feel discomfort for a few seconds before my tummy (actually) groans and it passes. Anyone else know what's up with this?

  12. Hey guys, I've just been discharged from hospital yesterday after having the surgery on Tuesday morning. I've woken up this morning being really dizzy, back aching with slight headache and my whole abdomen is so tender and sore... Is this normal? (It being this sore still since Tuesday) How long should I expect before the pain subsides? Thanks, Aaron
  13. So I'm lying in the hospital bed waiting for the surgery room to be prepped... I'm nervous as hell!
  14. Everything went well, I'm just a little sore as you can imagine, but surprisingly not as sore as I expected. Thanks for keeping me in your prayers guys
  15. Totally understand, I'm the same these days! Love my games. I guess how I see it, is that the sleeve essentially restricts how much you can eat, even if you don't 'stick to a diet plan and work hard'. If you don't, you feel physically sick ( from what I've been told) so I guess that's more motivation than anything t

    Narcoleptic

Hi, I have checked those by searching the forum but no luck, no information, mainly just passing comment. Yeah im on. dexamphetamines, which makes my heart race and worry even more about the effects of my weight
  17. I totally agree, it's crazy how accurate the article is. I'm 22, and as you all know the gay community idolises you when you're young. 18-20, I was out every night and had tons of friends who I'd see out every weekend clubbing, but thanks to a medical complication, I put on 30kgs and have felt like a total outcast since then... As I said, that article is eerily accurate
  18. Awh, looks like you already made up your mind! I'm 22, male and low end of the obese BMI range (35). The trouble I've found is that depending on what we do, our lifestyle is pretty sedentary. That mixed with all of the hanging out with mates, restaurants, pubs, etc it's hard to manage a diet at 22. All of my friends are all skinny, slim and eat the same as me but are able to keep it off, and it's becoming so hard now to actually go out with them when they are all so social and energetic and 'normal' sized, and I look like a buffalo next to them. I've thought long and hard about this, and from a health perspective, at 22 my heart, joints, kidneys, liver etc is still young and able to heal pretty well, but under the stress of an extra 30kgs for the next 10-15 years, it will play a massive part on contributing to other health complications. My thoughts anyway, best of luck to your son and you never know, he may prove me completely wrong and be able to lose the weight the ol' fashion way!
