  1. I added about a 1-2 inch piece of banana to a shake when I was about 1.5 weeks post op. I go SO SO full so quickly, I could barely drink half of my shake that morning. It did taste much better, but getting the Protein in was far more important. I couldn't believe that such a tiny piece all blended up would have such a big effect. As far as the NUT, I think they all have different hangups based on their own personal backgrounds. I love mine, but her rants on avocado are hilarious.
  2. I found something good at Costco today too! I bought a bag of hemp hearts. They're kind of a cross between a sesame seed and a sunflower seed. Super high in protein and Omega 3&6. I bought them to use in granola bars for the kids, but I think they'll be great in yogurt too. They're really small and not super crunchy (like a nut would be) so they might even mix into protein shakes. Made me feel like a bit of a hippy to buy those and coconut flour
  3. @@jess9395 Honestly, it's just a mish mash of a bunch of other training programs. I'm only 6 weeks out from surgery so right now I'm focused on working on my run/walk intervals. I subscribe to the Jeff Galloway method (http://www.jeffgalloway.com) where intervals are continued through your runs. I have no desire to run straight for 30 minutes, plus as Jeff believes, you will hold off injury and actually be faster in the long run if you use intervals! My goal for the 10K is to be at a 4/1 interval. We'll see how that goes and I'll probably maintain that for the 1/2. Maybe 6/1 if things are going well.
  4. I am doing a similar program with the goal of a 10k in October and a 1/2 marathon next Feb!
  5. I was cleared to take Pearl probiotics the day after surgery. They are tiny capsules.

    Best tasting protein bars?

This is an independent franchise, and he's super picky about what he carries. Our mall one does still have them!

    Best tasting protein bars?

@@DonRodolfo Our local GNC stopped carrying Quest bars. The owner said it was because they changed the formulas and now use more artificial things, which increased the sugar alcohols and he did want to carry them. Have you found that to be true?

    Protein Powders/Drinks ?

Ok my favorites (I'm about 5 weeks out) Fuzzy Navel (Syntrex) with some Crystal LIght drops, made with water--This is my go to every morning as a mid morning snack Amplify smoothie in Creamy chocolate (found at GNC) mixed with high Protein milk and a little PB2 and banana 1/2 Amplify 1/2 Syntrex Matrix Mint Cookie mixed with high protein milk (like a mint chocolate milkshake!) 1/2 Amplify 1/2 Click Decaf Mocha mixed with high protein milk (like a frapaccino!) I've tried a bunch of others and found them totally gross. I ordered a boat load of samples from Nashuanutrition.com/store/ which I highly recommend. They come very quickly.

    nausea

I didn't even think about supplements! I had to switch my multi because it was making me so sick. I'm glad you were able to figure it out and that you're feeling better!

Protein while traveling & Disney Dining

    1) If you search on disboards.com, there a loads of people who have traveled after bariatric surgery and have good tips. 2) allears.net has menus for every restaurant (counter service or not) that can help you plan where some good choices are for you. I think they (and maybe disneyfoodblog.com) have sections on lo-carb and south beach diets that would be helpful as well! 3) Some ideas off the top of my head for each park: Animal kingdom: Flame Tree BBQ has a 1/2 chicken meal or chicken salad Magic Kingdom: Columbia Harbor House has a salmon entree with couscous and broccoli. Also a really good tuna sandwich if you don't eat the bread Epcot: Tangerine Cafe has a chicken or lamb shwarma plate with hummus that is pretty good. There's a ton of crazy healthy options at the Sunshine Seasons food court Hollywood Studios: I hate eating in this park, not a ton of options. The sandwiches at the Starring Rolls Cafe are good, if you picked them apart. Read through the menus and see what you can find. We go fairly often to either Disneyland or WDW, but our next trip isn't until February. I hope you have an awesome time!

    Slider Food

From what I understand (and I am NOT someone with a science background), the valve between the stomach and the intestines only opens under certain conditions. Specifically when the food in the stomach has been digested to an appropriate slushy consistency. Yogurt, ice cream, liquids, Soup etc do not cause the valve to close for very long, and the stomach empties quicker. A dense Protein sits at the valve for a long time (unless you add liquid to move the process along). Because it's there for a long time, you feel fuller for much longer. Also, many simple starches are digested quickly as well (though not as quick as a soft, liquidy food),

    nausea

Does it seem worse at certain times during the day? I was super nauseous the first 2-3 weeks in the mornings until I figured out I needed to get up a drink something in the middle of the night. If you're dehydrated, you can also feel nauseous which just makes things work since you don't want to drink anything! Have you tried warm liquids? That can help relax the stomach a little and help you feel better.
  13. I had mine with Dr. Chock at NWWLS on April 9th. I think you'll be really happy with the facility!
  14. I made brownies today for a celebration. As I was wrapping up the leftovers, a very tiny piece fell off. I went to pick it up thinking, it's just a small piece, it will be fine. But then I stopped myself and said, I have had more brownies than I can imagine in my life and some day in the future I may have another. But there is literally no reason to eat this right now, other to sabotage my hard work. Finding out what motivates you, what kind of self-talk will get you through the tough moments is the most important thing you could be doing right now.
  15. There is literally no way I was getting in more than 10 or 15 oz the first few days and I had no complications and very little pain. Just do your best and try to take it easy on yourself so you can heal. I'm three weeks out and in the last few days, suddenly liquids are so much easier and I can hit my goal plus more each day.

    NSV shout outs

I had my first NSV today! I'm just over 3 weeks out (down 47 from the first time I walked into my surgeon's office, and about 15 since surgery). I tried on my wedding band which I haven't been able to wear since I was pregnant with my twins, 6 years ago! I had been wearing a replacement band my DH bought when the kids were born so I didn't have a naked finger but I love the original so much more. It makes me so happy to finally have it on again!

    Pureed food ideas? Help!

I made a greek seasoned ground lamb/beef and onion, which I pureed with greek yogurt and feta with a touch more greek seasoning. It was awesome.
  18. Yep, just search for it and TONS of people go through it! In my totally non professional opinion, it's your body finally giving into the idea that you'll never eat a normal diet again and holds on to everything it can. In a week or two (or three), as you add more calories, it will again feel ok with burning off fat stores.

    Mushy

My doctor said scrambled eggs can be a lot dryer then say a poached egg and then not sit as well. I'm sorry it was such a rough day and I hope tomorrow is better.
  20. I am three weeks out today, and was cleared for soft foods last week. My doc considers anything you can squish with a fork a soft food. My meal plan for today: Decaf tea with unsweetened almond milk Water with crystal light drops unjury chocolate splendor made with Protein enhanced milk Two tablespoons of white Beans with about 1 tsp of salsa and 1 tbls of guacamole 1 laughing cow triangle 1 tbls of ground beef/lamb mixed with 1 tbls of 0% greek yogurt and 1 tsp of feta Syntrax nectar Fuzzy Navel mixed with water I generally have 2 protein shakes a day and 2-3 meals of ~2-3 oz of protein heavy foods. In the last few days, it's also seemed to be easier to get my liquids in with not too many problems. I often have nausea for the first few hours in the morning too, so liquids are easier to tolerate.
  21. I'm about 2.5 weeks out and I started purees and soft foods on Thursday and so far it is going well. I am terrified about heaving or vomiting so I've been super cautious. I take about 3-4 minutes between tiny bites and chew like crazy (although, it's mostly purees, so "chewing"). However, I find that I'm not feeling any restriction and have been stopping meals after about 45 minutes. In that time, I'm eating maybe 3 tablespoons of food. I am trying to decide what indicates a good stopping point. Again, I don't feel fullness or have pain or hiccups. I also feel like I should be getting more calories than I'm getting right now (~400-500) because my energy level is crazy low. Any thoughts?
  22. I'd be really interested to know this too. I've done halfs and triathlons in the past and would love to be able to continue them. I have my eye on a half next February. I'm also kind of concerned about staying hydrated.

    staple line and dry heaves

I was on a constant dose of Zofran the first few days after surgery and then needed it in the mornings a few more days. There's also a patch called Scopolamine that helps a lot too. Call your doc, they DO NOT want you heaving at all.
  24. I ordered a sample of Syntrax Matrix Mint Cookie and it is AWESOME. Maybe slightly too minty on the aftertaste, but no weird Protein smell or aftertaste. It almost tastes like you had a mint chocolate milkshake that you let melt. I mixed it with high protein fat free milk, so it ends up having 35 grams of protein. I also ordered a sample of their Peanut Butter Cookie that I have high hopes for and will try tomorrow. I don't think either would be a daily thing, but it's a real nice change. I ordered the samples from http://www.nashuanutrition.com/store/ and they came really fast. They will make a sample of anything they carry, I think.
  25. The vast majority of people in this world do indulge on holidays. That is normal and typical and NOT a sign you are regressing. You had 10 milk duds. Did you eat three servings of dinner and then a large slice of pie and then sneak another one when no one was looking? That is unhealthy and abnormal behavior. You stopped, you recognized, you give yourself a break. Feeling guilty over these choices will only lead to more self-destructive behavior.
