  1. Try the Atkins shakes. They are 10-15 grams of Protein and come in a 4 pack for about $6. You can find them at Wal-Mart, Target, and probably your local grocery store. They come in lots of delicious flavors too. In the beginning, you'll only be able to drink a third of it, so stick it back in the fridge until you are ready to have more. Some of the powdered shake mixes have a really weird taste. The Atkins shakes don't.

  2. Keep your old clothes.. don't get rid of them until they absolutely don't fit anymore. 20lbs is too much to be lifting while you're healing. Ask your surgeon when you can do heavy lifting. I had double hernia repair along with my sleeve and wasn't allowed to lift 10lbs for 8 weeks. Post op tips: take a pillow with you for the ride home after surgery.. you will place it on your abdomen and apply pressure when going over bumps in the road. Figure out what Protein Shake you like best now, you'll be drinking that for 1-3 weeks (depending on what your nutritionist says). Buy your Vitamins now that way you have them after surgery.. make sure they are liquid/sublingual/chewable. I get mine from Walgreens but they are on Amazon too.. optisource multi Vitamin for post bariatric surgery. Start taking Biotin now (it may stop the Hair loss before it starts). Buy lots of sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles..that will also be part of your diet for 1-4 weeks. The hardest part is the eating phases.. you will want to eat things your stomach isn't ready for.. stick with the plan they give you- it's for your safety, your new stomach needs time to heal and can't digest certain foods before it's healed. No food warrants a trip to the emergency room. Check on bariatric pal's forums frequently, there's a wealth of support and information. When in doubt, call your nutritionist or surgeon. If you are nervous, let them know and they will give you a mild sedative similar to xanax before you go into surgery. You'll be fine, this is a great decision you have made. Best of luck!

  3. I was sleeved on 2/28 and as of Today, 5/30, I haven't experienced any Hair loss. I do take the following Vitamins daily: optisource citrus chewable multi Vitamin 4x a day, Nature Made VitaMelts contains 2500mcg of Biotin and 60mg of Vitamin C, and a sublingual liquid B complex with B12. I eat lots of chicken breast and start my day with an Atkins shake that has 15g of Protein. I feel confident that as long as I take my vitamins and stick to a high protein diet, I won't experience hair loss.

  4. I had my surgery in Reynosa, Mexico (right next to Mission, Texas). You would fly into McAllen, Texas. My surgery coat was $6999 and included one night hospital stay. My surgeon was Dr Felipe Cantu. Google him and you'll find the corresponding phone number to reach his staff. Patty and Alejandra are both patient coordinators and speak English as most of the staff does, including the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, nutritionist and psychiatrist. Best hospital care I ever received and I did not have any complications.

  5. I am almost 3 weeks post op. I have been miserably nauseated by all the soft foods and Protein drinks. It has been so hard to get that stuff down without gagging. So today I ate some of a turkey sandwich on wheat bread. I was scared I would get sick but surprisingly I felt way better. I know my nutritionist said don't eat anything I couldn't mash up with a fork and I probably shouldn't have eaten that but I am wondering has anyone else strayed from their diet? Am I gonna ruin my sleeve?

You need to try your best to stick to the phases. The reason for them is so your stomach can heal. By "straying", you are causing your stomach to work very hard to try and digest food it isn't ready for. It's just a few more weeks before you can have solids. Be honest about your cheating with your nutritionist. I am a picky eater.. during that phase I ate the same thing daily. Find what you do like and eat it. Have moist chicken or special k Cereal that is soaked and mushy with almond or soy milk. broth is still fine. sugar free Jello and pudding are allowed. Try some low fat or light yogurt without fruit in it. I know it's a challenge to stay on track, but you don't want to end up in the ER because you couldn't follow your eating plan.

  6. As I've posted in other threads, I originally tried to keep my surgery on the down-low, but the 4 people I told ended up telling the rest of the world, so that didn't work out so well. But the upside is I've had nothing but support and congratulations and positive feedback. Lots of curious questions and it's been nice not to have to lie to people about my weight loss. Anyways, last night we had a girls night at a friends house (where I splurged on the toppings of 1/2 piece of pizza, a couple chips with salsa and a glass of Chardonnay!). We were talking about my recent fecal transplant, hysterectomies, menopause, and another girl's inability to have an orgasm (love girl's night).

Towards the end of the night someone was asking something about my surgery. One gal jumped in and asked what surgery? Another girl proceeded to fill her in on the details. She was shocked! "I am SO against this kind of surgery" and "I saw how much weight you lost and I was so proud of you...now I know you just took the easy way out". And you should have seen the look on her face when she found out I had it done in Tijuana! Anyways, I really didn't have to say much, because everyone else jumped in to my defense and she got more grief over not even knowing about my surgery...everyone else in our circle of friends know. It was actually pretty comical. I still don't regret people knowing about my surgery....she is kind of a loon ;)

Well you are classier than I am.. I vowed to punch someone right in their stupid mouth if they ever accused me of taking the easy way out. First off, there's nothing easy about it. I suffered through two hernia repairs and struggled with all phases of the eating plan because I'm a picky eater. Kudos to you for keeping your cool. I had mine done in Reynosa, Mexico. Best hospital care I have ever had. Too bad there's a stigma surrounding surgery in Mexico.

  7. Lots of people have commented on my weight loss, however, invariably they follow up with "did you mean to lose weight?"

Why is that? Does it happen to you?

Does anyone lose that kind of weight accidentally?

Is our society so difficult to lose weight in that people automatically assume you are ill if you lose a lot of weight?

Maybe I look awful as a thin person and I look sick?

    What is your experience?

I haven't encountered that because I announced my surgery on Facebook for all my family and friends. I figured it would be hard to hide eventually.. coming clean about a week before surgery worked out well for me. I had a lot of positive responses. By all of them knowing it also helps with going to gatherings/resteraunts and I don't have to explain/justify why I eat like a bird now.

  8. Hi...my husband and I had our sleeve surgery on 3/14...I have no problem eating foods and he cannot keep anything down...the only difference is he had a hernia repaired. Are there any others out there that had a hernia that were unable to eat and now things are better? He is very concerned that he has ruined his chances of living a normal enjoyable life since he is sick after every meal...any words of hope or encouragement from those a bit further along in this journey?

I was sleeved on 2/28 and had both hiatal and umbilical hernias repaired. I have not had any difficulties whatsoever. I honestly believe that everyone is different. People heal differently and tolerate foods better than others. I can say that the first 4 days after surgery were very painful because of the hernia repair but it didn't impact my liquid diet and now that I am 6 weeks out, I'm still fine. Hope he feels better soon.
