    Any September bandsters out there???

i just had mine 10 days ago and am very happy. it's a process and it's a tool is what i've learned... i have no discomfort at all now and am doing great. my energy level is thru the roof. i'm walking my butt off literally. LOL my advice would be to listen listen listen and do what you're instructed and on your surgery day enjoy your "nap"!!! i thought of it as a very well deserved rest!!!!! i have a list that i went by; if you would like it just send me a message and i'll send it to you. try to enjoy the journey!
  4. i had a last hurrah for 3 yrs since i chickened out the first time so i didn't need one before surgery LOL i have many many happy last hurrah meals to reflect from to tide me over. i began gaining weight after i got divorced in 1990... the first yr i gained 60# because i was NUMB. i couldn't feel it! i didn't feel a thing. i remember when my son was growing up if i got to 130# i felt HUGE. i was 125# before the divorce. by 2001 when i got remarried, i was at ~190#. I just couldn't get it off and have steadily gained every year since. i'm only 5ft 2in so i'm about as wide as i am tall. my son came to visit today and he hadn't seen me in a yr or so and he couldn't believe how good i look. he kept saying he wasn't going to worry anymore now that he'd seen me cuz i look so full of vitality and energy he was just amazed. Getting 31# off has taken the swelling out of my ankles, my knees don't hurt, i wore dress shoes to church today for the first time in YEARS... and we walked on the beach after i had walked for over an hour with a gf earlier today!!!! he & his gf and friends couldn't keep up with me. Dr. Fontana did perform the lapband surgery on me. i have 5 tiny incisions where the laproscopic instruments were inserted. it's ben 10 days now and i have no pain whatsoever. i can sleep on my tummy now or however i want to without any discomfort. the thing that is most striking for me is my energy level. i have a new nickname: energizer bunny :biggrin1:
  5. i was on liquids for 10 days before surgery... and ever since i had the surgery 10 days ago... i have my first post op appt. day after tomorrow & he told me i would be on soft foods then for about a week... then i can slowly introduce the allowed regular foods. it sounds reasonable to me and i feel great and have lost 31# so i follow his advice.

i didn't cuz i figured they'd be taking it off.
  7. i'm glad you got unfilled and are improving. i'm also glad i didn't read this thread before my surgery! i would have second guessed everything. I just hope people read thru all of the posts for clarity. education it would seem is paramount.

    Walking: Stepping It Up!

This morning I walked for over an hour. Susan and I went up and down the streets here at the north end of the beach looking at all the construction going on. We had such a good time. We just walked and walked and before we knew it, she looked at her watch and said we had been at it for over an hour. This was the first time I've seen her since surgery. She was amazed. She said my face is getting defined and my legs and everything is smaller. She can really tell I'm down 28#. I feel so good today I'm going to the shelter for a while. I'm having lunch first so I will be full. My little cup of cream of chicken that I have come to love. I have such a sense of accomplishment with each new thing. This is just amazing. Every day is like a brand new me that I get to unwrap. :clap2:

    Swimming -- wow!

i'm having a countdown to when i can swim. tomorrow is a week postop so 3 more weeks til i can swim. i'm walking now but i'd love to swim too!!!!
  12. oh no heather i didn't lose 28 lbs in a week!!!! That's what I've lost total since I've been jumping thru the hoops. When I went to the hospital last week after being on a liquid diet for 10 days I was 245. Today I'm 230. So that's still 15 lbs. I haven't lost 15 lbs in yrs. i'm so sorry about your sister. Sometimes we have to have a loss of life in our face to take ours back. What issue are you talking about that you think might set you back from being a candidate for surgery? My BMI was 46. I have had 2 heart attacks. I don't have sleep apnea or diabetes (borderline though!)... and those things DID make me a candidate for surgery. Simply because it's not just about losing weight or getting down to your goal but about improving your health! Losing the excess baggage improves everything because you gain your mobility and get off medications you no longer need cuz you no longer have those problems! My timeline was: Seminar in February Surgery in Sept. so that's 7 months.
  13. I use the Kempsville office cuz it's closer to where I live at the beach. He did my surgery at Norfolk General. From what I know they use a local anesthetic when they do fills. I stayed in the hospital til friday around noon i was released. I had to have a leak test; barium, xray to make sure everything was working right before i was discharged. As of today my weight is down from the highest of 258 to 230. I walked both of our dogs together a little while ago for the first time since i got home. i had been walking them individually since about monday when i could. I was afraid of them pulling so i didn't do it til then at all. I'm feeling really great. My energy level is getting up there again like it was before surgery. I'm sleeping well. Yesterday morning i surprised myself and hubby when i woke up on my stomach. it didn't hurt at all either. Heather what you need to do is find out when NSG is having an education seminar again... they have one coming up Dr. Fontana told me... and attend it. Don't be nervous. This is the best thing I've done for MYSELF in I can't remember when. Every day I wake up excited for what's in store that i find out i can do, and i know i've made an accomplishment that is going to pay dividends for years and years to come. :kiss2:
  14. i would do everything that's been suggested... wonderful suggestions! and i would also take her with me to my appts. esp. to see the Dr. your daughter needs to understand that your quality of life is compromised... sure anyone can lose weight... that's not the point... keeping it off is what is hard and having the tool of the lapband to do so is a God send! you have everything lined up: your hubby agrees, your insurance agrees, your dr. and YOU. by the way, i'm 51 my son is 33 and i had my lapband last thursday. i feel like a million bucks already. i am so happy that i did it cuz i chickened out in 2004 and just gained even more weight. now i'm having an excellent adventure, and it's only been 6 days! :clap2::biggrin1::bored:whoo:

A Week From Banding In VA Beach

tomorrow is a week since surgery! time flies when you're having fun.
  16. I went to the seminar that the NSG put on back in February. I chose them because they are convenient and I Love Dr. Fontana. He took great care of me before and after the procedure. I always ask him if he's ever gotten tired of doing what he does, and his response is always NO! He loves it cuz he says it is so gratifying to see the results in his patients. I still ask him every time I see him... it's become a joke. I got thoroughly educated before surgery and couldn't have been more ready. Every precaution was taken with the tests I had to complete to get here. He made sure I was up to it in every way. So given that I passed all of them, I was comfortable and ready to go! I wasn't worried or nervous; I was EXCITED!!!! I wanted to get to the next phase, and here I am. Heather, NSG has two offices. One in VB and one in Chesapeake. The Medical Center 113 Gainsborough Square Suite 203 Chesapeake, VA 23320 Office: 547-9589 Fax: 547-9020

A Week From Banding In VA Beach

Heidi here is a link to Dr. Fontana's stats. Bariatric Surgeon Profile - Mark Fontana, M.D. F.A.C.S. i'm feeling pretty good today. i went for a walk-i'm supposed to do at least 3 walks a day... the first day (friday) i walked to the corner... which is about 100 yards. I've upped it each day... a block saturday) , 2 blocks (yesterday), 3 blocks (today). Dr. Fontana told me to make sure i take deep breaths and walk. i can't feel the band at all. I don't have any inflammation. What affected me was the trach tube... i have no voice to speak of (LOL) cuz it's bruised and sore. It doesn't hurt today but my voice still is minnie mousey. what made me choose this group is i went to one of his orientations back in February. I had met with another dr. in 2004 for this, and Dr. Fontana seemed more everything. he talked about everything i had in mind to ask him. He's very matter-of-fact and I love that. It is what we need as bariatric patients cuz ultimately it's us who does the work. The Dr. educates us on what to expect etc. but he doesn't come home with us. That's a GOOD thing although he is one handsome man!!!!!!

    September 9 : 3 days post-op

I had the lapband procedure done this past Thursday, September 6, 2007. Dr. Mark Fontana with the Norfolk Surgical Group did mine. I had seen him a few times since the initial education session back in February. Nilda was my favorite nurse. She waited on me happily and came in just to check on me and we'd share a laugh or two. She took great care with me and I really appreciated it. I told her about Kristina having it Oct. 10th. I hope Kristina gets her! I am on a full liquid diet now. So today I had: breakfast oatmeal with 1 % lowfat milk sugar free jello coffee with splenda and fat free creamer lunch sugar free instant breakfast with unjury sugar free pudding cup dinner cream of chicken soup strained lots of water sipped; not during meals though
