MichaelM got a reaction from aroundhky in Muscle Loss Sucks
I was sleeved on 2/4. I have been lifting medium to light for a week. The strength is coming back. I get 100g + of Protein a day (mostly through Isopure 50g protien no carbs) calories are still a little low around 700-900. Down 30 lbs but desperately trying to preserve as much muscle mass as I can. I was a defensive lineman in college and have always been muscular.. Even when my weight crept up to 355. No issues with energy and lifting as long as I get my hydration. I shoot for a min of 100 g of H2O a day. It is hard to get but I focus on it daily.

Just played my first round of golf post surgery. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to put the same weight into my swing, etc. Silly, I know but that's the type of stuff that goes through my head.
Have to report that golf is much easier with less weight. Besides the fact that the weight loss had no negative effects on my game, there was a bunch of little stuff that made the whole experience more enjoyable. Not having my shirt go all untucked every swing, not sweating like a pig, not feeling like I was climbing Everest every time I walked up to an elevated green, not having my thigh smooch against the side rail in the golf cart we're all welcomed improvements.
I'm still a hacker like before but a much happier one....
Have you guys played post surgery?

MichaelM got a reaction from Fiddleman in Bmi Less Important Than Other Markers For Good Health
I am so not a fan of the BMI. It was originally developed between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet during the course of developing "social physics", it is defined as the individual's body mass divided by the square of their height. The concept of the BMI is essentially 150-170 years old. In my opinion its use is primarily driven by insurance companies and their Actuaries. Using BMI as a universal tool to predict future health is lazy but it allows the rule makers to place people in nice neat pigeon holes. Since insurance companies use this tool to help predict profit/loss it has become ingrained in our lexicon. It may have some use as a generic guide but not much else. There are better indicators as you have outlined.
As a former strength athlete I will never hit a normal BMI. In fact if I ever reach singe digit bodyfat I will still be considered obese by the BMI table. Measures of health need to be evaluated on a individual basis. Even the US military knows this. When a Soldier/Airman/Marine falls outside the height/weight tables they are not automatically considered overweight. They then have body composition measurements to determine percentage of body fat.
How can BMI be a good indicator of future health when it is not a reliable indicator of current health?
    Thanks for your post!

Hello all I am new and just reaching out to say hello. I was sleeved 6 days ago. So far I am doing fairly well. Weakness is my only issue right now. Maybe I hit the ground running a little too hard (walked 2 miles yesterday and 1.7 the day before). After the walk yesterday I slept for 12 hours and woke up still feeling weak. No problem getting minimum fuilds in (still on clear liquids). Weight loss so far 21lbs (Start 354, current 333).

MichaelM reacted to gmanbat in Sleeving...burning the bridge behind me...
Sleeving was like burning a bridge behind me. On the other side was endless failed dieting and certain premature death. The decision was drastic and not without risks but staying there presented greater risks in my mind.

I am glad I burned the bridge. The land I live in now is my new adopted country. The rules are real here, the sleeve is a constant reminder of the laws of the land. On the other side, however, were tyrannical dictators... compulsive hunger and a stretched out stomach... that kept me in chains.

The bridge is burned, but can I ever go back?

    Yes.

If I rebel here I can swim back over the river and end up in the same prison as before even though I have a smaller stomach. It would be difficult but it is possible.

The thing is, I absolutely adore my life now! Listening to my sleeve is a small requirement and a huge advantage. My sleeve's restrictions are a tiny price to pay for the sweet freedom I now experience in every aspect of my life. My wife burned a bridge too, but with gastric bypass matches.

LOL, Thanks Michael. It feels good to be rarin' to go on this weight loss. My husband is proof that you will lose without walking since he can barely walk due to back and leg problems. He has gone from 320 to 269 since Sept. 13, and his sleeve was 12/2. You are younger and we only wish we could have had this surgery 10 years ago when we could have exercised. This site and the friends here will give you lots of guidance in your new life!
