    Kaiser Hawaii

Aloha Wahine! I am on Maui and have done orientation and now have the GB orientation in May. My question is about loosing weight before surgery. I am a BMI of 38 with chronic pain and autoimmune disease. I am going on a trip in a month so really being restrictive on my diet as we all know those mainland flights are really uncomfortable when you are fat. I already walk 10,000 to 18,000 steps daily with work. Can you loose too much weight and not qualify? I do have a documented seven year history of obesity and up and down weight with Kaiser. Any info would be super helpful.
  2. Has your WLS helped with autoimmune disease or endocrine issues? I am asking specifically about Hashimotos, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroid?

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Thanks for the insight. No, I am not happy and loosing weight, being totally honest with myself regarding intake and output, is not working now. I think my last episode of huge weight loss (horrible divorce/custody battle) triggered serious health issues and my body is no longer responding to expected outcomes of calorie counting, using a reasonable amount of 1500 to 1800 daily, and exercise. The body reset portion is what I wanted to hear. I could accept being fat but the pain in my body due to being fat is unbearable anymore and I work a physical job where I am on my feet almost eight hours a day. I wasn't aware of the reset portion, thinking it was just severely restricted calories and thats it. I am just starting and have to go through the Kaiser *** process so I haven't even attended the mandatory class but was referred. Step 1 of 1000! These boards have been great..thanks for the honesty!
  4. I have hashimottos, the surgery does nothing for it. I think the hashimottos inhibits is from losing as much as others. Have you lost anything? Do you still eat AIP like? Tell me what has WLS done for your endocrine health even if it's something small.
  5. Thank you for your comments. It's been something I have considered for about ten years. I have the healthy diet under control so maybe this will reset my system if I go through it. How many calories do you eat? What type of foods? I see so many chemicals things on the lists like sugar free jello and pudding cups. That stuff makes my endocrine issues worse. I still want to eat organic whole food.
  6. Are still on just Levo? Have you looked at NDT? I do both. I don't have the energy like I did from several years ago but a million times better than my crash three years ago. It's a struggle to think you go through this big surgery and then still feel lousy. Would you do it again? I just don't want regrets,.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

So did you decrease your thyroid meds? Have your antibodies decreased? Do you still supplement adrenal? I don't want to be skinny and even more sick. I have been reading that people have gotten Hashimotos AFTER WLS. How about those of us who already have it before? So much to consider.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

I guess I didn't make it more clear on this thread. I eat very healthy, whole food diet. I track my calories through two fitness bands and eat 1500 to 2000 calories a day. I walk 13,000 to 15,000 steps a day with a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio. I have starved in the past and it has worked. With endocrine system issues I am still a large woman. My point of saying that it seems like getting WLS is that most posts I am ready say they eat under 1000 calories. I can do that without surgery. That is why I am seeking clarification and asking questions.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Ok. So explain how your hormones change. I truly don't understand that part. Also, when researching the diet guidelines a lot of things seemed unhealthy and loaded with chemicals like sugar free jello, pudding cups, etc. Is one destined to not be able to eat whole organic foods again? And those Optifast shakes are total crap...way too many chemicals. I think Id be more sick from eating chemcials than being big. There are so many things to consider....feeling overwhelmed with the good stuff and the bad stuff.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Hi. I found this thread through another thread. Can I just be super blunt here? From reading all of these comments in sounds to me that eating very little is what needs to happen for anyone to loose the weight (Hypo, Hashi, AF myself). If the point is to starve yourself then why bother to get a major surgery and risk complications? Starvation is the ONLY way I have ever lost weight in the past. I am not trying to be sassy but just being real. Comments? Thoughts? Contemplation? I have reached a breaking point with my body's failure to cooperate with trying to get the weight off with lots of exercise and calorie counting plus clean eating.

To diet or to do WLS

I am glad someone posted this. I have been up and down my whole life but due to endocrine issues I adopted a more strict diet which consists of mostly veggies, ground turkey and fruit. I sometimes eat rice and don't eat much fat except a tablespoon of heavy cream in my coffee and food prepared in a little olive oil and mozzarella sticks. I have logged on and off the last couple years and I average between 1500 to 2000 calories. Once a week I eat a small brownie at work or a small bag of chips (200 calories). I am honest with myself. Maybe once a month I eat two or three slices of pizza (a birthday party) or eat one of my deserts that's all dairy and sugar but these are not regular occurrences and I own it. For my full time job I walk a MINIMUM of 10,000 steps but more in the 13,000 to 15,000 range. I am 225 lbs and almost 5'7''. I have only been thin with literally starving myself. Honestly I loved being thin. I am dumbfounded and not sure where to turn either.
  12. Hello all. I am struggling with making the decision for lap band. My weight has flucuated between 300 and 140. I am at least 205 to 210 right now and sick of being a yo yo. It puts my BMI only at 33.5-34. I am actually healthy with no weight causing conditions except for a bad knee and chaffing. I eat really healthy just too much and my sugar craving I only give into about once a week. I don't do alcohol or caffeine. I actually manage to get to the gym maybe 8-10 times a month and walk at home some days for maybe 30 minutes each time. This is where I struggle. During a horrible divorce and ensuing custody battle that still is going on I got down to 140 at one point with eating very little. Maybe 3-5 bites of food at a time a few times a day. This seemed to be alarming to people and they were concerned for me. The only times I have been able to keep myself at a "normal" BMI is eating 1200 calories a day and working out at least an hour 5 days a week. Working full time, having a special needs son and still having some time with my husband I just can't spend that much time at the gym or exercising. So in all that what I see is that it's no socially acceptable more me to eat very little UNLESS i have surgery that limits what I can eat. I can't find my balance and honestly I like being thin and being able to wear cute clothes, not have my thighs rub together. I feel more attractive and more socially acceptable when I am thinner. Any thoughts?
