I'm with both of you but I'm struggling with the full liquid diet post-op. I have no ideas so it's been Protein Shakes, Water, broth, and sf popsicles on repeat. My doc requires 2 weeks of full liquids before purée and although the options are still slim I'm dying to be at that phase.

Honestly it wasn't too bad. The weather was cold and kept the patients away. I did work 4 12 hour nights in a row. Nights 2 and 3 were not easy and I felt super dry and dizzy. I started chewing ice chips like crazy which really helped. The problem I'm having is I'd rather not eat than eat the options I have. So as far as nutrition goes I'm failing but I'm doing much better with my liquids. I have a follow up with my surgeon tomorrow and I'm nervous about it. I've lost 40lbs altogether now though and I'm super excited about that.

Hi everyone, hope you all are doing well. I have a few things I wanted to ask those who are where I am or beyond that may have experience with the same issues.
My day of surgery I was allowed nothing by mouth.
The next day I was allowed 1 oz of Water per hour. Then starting yesterday for 2 weeks I'm allowed full liquids. Yesterday I mixed Protein Shake in my Greek yogurt because I'm told everything must be the consistency of milk and able to roll off the spoon. I maybe was able to take in 4 bites of yogurt, and drank half a Premier Protein and water all day yesterday. Today I haven't "eaten" anything. I've been sipping water and sucked on 2 sugar free popsicles (surprisingly felt great). What is everyone else doing at this time?
As far as how I feel....I'm in Pain but not really taking much medication. My abdomen is extremely swollen especially my left side which is also bruised and very swollen. I'm dizzy intermittently which tells me I need more water. How long does it take for the swelling in the abdomen to decrease.
I guess I need reassurance that what I'm experiencing is normal.

I go back to work on Dec 21st. Same thing, 12 hour night shift. Not a lot of options overnight at the hospital I work at if I forget to bring something to eat! I'll be on full liquids by then, so definitely Protein Shakes, cream Soup, runny oatmeal, Jello, broth and the like. Better to be over prepared than under I suppose.

Hi there! I am 9 days past surgery and had to go to work 6 days after surgery. I am really only doing Protein Shakes and a 4 oz mug of broth to break it up. My husband had the good sense to put the broth in a YETI cup and it stayed warm all day. It allowed me to sip, sip, sip it for the afternoon.
Good luck. Only thing I forgot to do is drink enough water....feels like constantly sipping something.....

If this has already been suggested I apologize.

My dr told me to take 2 doses/day of Milk of Magnesia until I had gone. So I took 2 doses on Friday and went on Saturday morning. I'm only 1 week post-op but I haven't had an issue since. Good luck to you!

This is such a great thread - I’m day 6 and I feel the same as you all and was wondering what and how much everyone is eating.

My Soups have been broths mainly, but I’ve been also eating Optifast soups. Not sure if you have it in the US but they do shakes and soups and it’s what we have to stay on for the 2 weeks pre-op here. I just think their soups may be more nutritious than just broth. Jelly was nice too.

I can’t wait to get onto cream soups which I will start next week.

Today marks a week since my surgery, and I’m also struggling with the full liquid diet. It’s almost to the point of regretting the surgery. However, I do believe phase 2 of the diet will be more fulfilling and I’ll begin to feel normal again. Can’t wait!!

Oh my gosh it’s not just me! I’m dying here too. I’m 6 days post op. I need to start upping my food intake I don’t think I’m doing enough. I have like 1/3 a oikos triple zero yogurt in the morning usually and like 1/4c cream of chicken. One Premier Protein a day. And I just had to up my Water intake cause I was getting dehydrated. But I keep reading all the people are eating more then that so I don’t know if I’m getting enough. But yogurt and the cream Soup. It’s wayyyy better then broth. Feels like food 😂

I'm 1 week out today and per Dr orders I'm Full-liquids until 12/15. Can someone send me ideas of what you are drinking through the day every day? I'm having a hard time with this right now. I appreciate all the ideas I can get!

Thanks so much, I've been pretty much doing the same things you mentioned. But I haven't had any cream Soups yet. I've done chicken broth and beef broth. Maybe I'll try a tasty cream of chicken for dinner ; ) I swore I wasn't going to weigh myself for a month but I have weighed everyday. So far I'm down 17lbs as well! That's far more exciting than the liquid diet!!

I am at the exact timeline as you. I am doing a Protein Shake in the morning (about 7 or 8am). Takes me about 15 minutes to get thru that. I feel like I could suck the whole thing down, but I don't. I also have 1 or 2 cups of coffee (against my NUT's advice). Around 11am I have one or 2 cups of Cream of chicken or mushroom Soup. This also only takes me at the most 1/2 hour to consume. I also get in my second Protein shake by about 2pm. I have no adverse effects except maybe a few burps and a lot of noise in the gut. I try and get 1 or 2 12oz bottles of Water by this time. My wife gets home bout 4:30 and for dinner I watch her eat. Then around 6pm I have my final protein shake. I also sip water thru out the day. I was 244 on the day of my surgery 1/28/17 and weighed 236 today. I weigh myself about 4 times a day. Any questions let me know.

Check whatever materials/lists you were given, as what's permitted varies from plan to plan. You should be able to have Water, Protein Drinks, broth, creamy Soups, yogurt (such as Oikos triple zero), sugar-free popsicles . . .
I'll admit that I didn't much enjoy the liquid phase or the slushy stage, but once I could eat real food again, I became much, much happier. It really isn't that long, although while you are doing it, it seems like forever. But after the first month . . . you'll have many more options.
    Good luck!

It’s a blessing to be on this side of the post. Surgery was Dec 4th and it was a success. I look forward to reading and expecting what’s to come! Congrats to all who jus recently made the transition from pre to post op as well!!

In glad you are feeling relief. You have a wonderful wife! I had the sleeve on 11/28 and Friday I couldn't take it anymore and took 2 doses of MoM....I'm thankful I did. I'm struggling still but with different things now. I'm still dealing with significant pain and bruising only on my left side and I'm struggling watching my family eat anything they want. I've gotten out of the house each day I've been home. I've walked outside (since it has been unseasonably warm for December) and I've gone to the grocery store to get items I don't have each day also. My tunnel looks super long also but I feel it's getting better each day.

Remember, as the fat in your body burns off, all of the stored hormones in there literally flood your body. And you're burning fat so fast, it's a big flood. Mood swings are normal, a little sadness or regret are normal. To me, it's ok to mourn the life you had- as long as you spend more time looking forward to all of the living you have ahead of you.

Thanksgiving was a week and half post op for me, and sitting there with my 3 ounces of cottage cheese was miserable. I got through it, we all had a good laugh, and now I'm glad for that day. Couldn't have restrained myself last Thanksgiving. You'll get there.

It has been a rough 4 days. I went through buyers remorse big time last night. Had extreme nausea and felt like I couldn’t swallow anything. Had clearly lost a lot of Water as I was down 12 lbs in 24 hours. Every time I tried to drink I felt nauseous, probably drank 6 oz of water the whole day. Called my Dr and he wrote me an Rx for anti nausea meds. As I sat up most of the night, I did what no one should do, and searched the internet for my symptoms. I narrowed it down to intestinal blockage or simple Constipation. Well, constipation is the most likely, so I sent my wife to the store for enemas, MoM, and suppositories. She gave me an enema this morning (marriage level Expert Achieved!). A few hours later and things started feeling better. This is the most normal day I’ve had since the surgery.
I do have some... pressure in my chest/throat area. I wonder if this has to do with the fact that I had both a hiatal hernia and rny done. Anyone else have this done together? Anyway, I just wanted to post with the small victory. I feel like I can see a light at the end of the tunnel... looks like a long tunnel, but at least it doesn’t look as dark as it did last night.

I came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon and I felt good, but now I just cried as my family ate dinner and I drank my protien shake. I’m ashamed that I couldn’t lose the weight on my own and I’ve had to have surgery to correct my weight problem. I see them eating and enjoying their food and I wish I could enjoy it too. I knew this was going to be hard but I guess I didn’t figure in the smells of food I would miss.😢

Very very important to push liquids these first few days rather than the Protein. It is super easy to get dehydrated and once you do it is hard to remedy. Sip constantly - warm tea, sf popsicles, crystal light, broth, anything. I could not tolerate sweet shakes and went to ready-made Isopure punch or blue raspberry mixed with half crystal light.
Hunger is usually acid reflux, if one med isn't working call your surgeon's office and see if something else will work better. Sometimes your stomach is just 'empty' and that might be a new sensation to you, also your gut will be very noisy. You will be bloated and maybe even gain a pound or two, stay off the scale - yeah it's exciting but it will be all over the map these first weeks. Walk and walk and walk. Then nap. You will be soo tired but not realize it until you hit a wall and nearly zap out or cry.
Use a heating pad on your insicions or back. You will feel cold. I am still cold, I heard it could be that way for a long time. You will not feel restriction until you get to more solid food, so don't be alarmed if you don't get that full feeling, just keep following the plan.
    Welcome.
