Had my band surgery 2 years ago at age 66, I don't think you are ever too old to get healthy. I tell friends and family, I wasn't going to ever model swimsuits but I will probably live a healthier life for whatever time I have left. My main goal in getting weight loss surgery was to get rid of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was on a collision coarse with serious health issues and I wanted to change course If you are ready to make a change, age doesn't matter.

@@Goatfarmer - It's nice to see someone close to my age here as well. And what I think we both forgot to mention, is that we are only 65 and 66 in number, inside we are still young chicks and soon to prove it when our outside catches up to the inside. I so agree with all comment. It's never too late to take hold and change your lifestyle and the course of your health.

I'm going to be self pay. $13000. Chicago. The clinic has a finance company that they work with if you can't pay in full. I will pay $1000 on pre-op day and the $12000 remaining on surgery day. All pre-op included and 12 months of follow ups and fills included. DayOne Health. My insurance won't cover any of it.

Look at your band site(stoma) as if it's a funnel. Large and even small chunks of food can plug it up. For me, it's usually just too much food eaten too fast that impacts and overwhelms the pouch area in front of the stoma. For example: Triscuits with all their little crisp threads, even chewed to mush, seem to behave like a dam in front of my stoma and no food can pass till the esophageal peristalsis contractions force the bolus of food to pass the stoma.
Dry foods like chicken, roast pork and beef seem to struggle getting through my stoma. It rarely is painful for me but it is quite uncomfortable. It happened Saturday night at a restaurant. I had to wait about 30 minutes for it to pass. Sometimes, it can take an hour to pass.
I've never been one who can PB(productive burp) these up. I do slime a lot though. Sliming is when your esophagus creates a lot of saliva/phlegm to lubricate the path through to the stomach. If you're home, you can spit it up. I've spent several minutes in restaurant bathrooms spitting up gobs of slime. It seems to reduce the pressure and discomfort.
Ask me anything? I've probably been stuck 300 times in the last 2 years.

I was wondering, what city are you in. I am in the Chgo area & my surgical center is great. They have free seminars weekly to explain the different surgeries that are available.

patjcare reacted to KathieMae52 in Age 61 looking forward to the end of a long time struggle.
My name is Kathy and I live in Louisiana . I am 61 years old I will be 62 in April. I have been battling eating problem since I got married at age 19. My main problem is that I over eat when I am sad or something bad happens that is difficult to handle and people call that emotional eating but I Call it bingeing. I have two sisters one has passed away but all of us were overweight in our adult years. my father was probably in the 300 lb range. I have chosen not to go to Mexico because I'm not comfortable with going there but that being said I know many people who have gone there have been successful with no problems or regrets. it is just my personal decision that I am making to stay here in Louisiana. I am 5'4" and I weigh over 200 pounds. I have tried and failed to lose weight more times than I can count. And each time I get bigger and bigger. This is not a decision that I came to overnight.I have researched it for the past 6 years. the past two years has been extremely difficult. I have tried walking 2 miles every day trying to diet and consistently failing. I am basically healthy at this point. I do have restless leg syndrome and I also have acid reflux which I believe is attributed to the weight gain. I also have depression which is associated with many things but certainly the weight problem contributes to my self-esteem. I also feel that as I age other things can happen such as high blood pressure and diabetes so I really don't want to go there. I have my lab work done and I have a consultation on January 20, 2014. I am in hopes that I will have my surgery on February 5th 2014. I am confident that this is the right thing for me and I'm looking forward to it as I see it as the end of a long time struggle. I have heard that people will lose their hair after the surgery and for this I have checked into supplements and other things that you can do to prevent or to make it so that you don't loose so much or any at all. Also getting the proper nutrition, Protein and Iron as well as other things is vital not Only because it would help to not lose your hair but it'll help you to be healthier and heal faster. I will update as I go forward.
