  1. Today's Press-Enterprise newspaper front page featured a young woman weighing 555# who had a gastric bypass in Oct. It took 3 pages and was a great article on the surgery and her journey. It was wonderful to see such a positive article since there are still so many people that feel that surgery to lose weight is the easy way out. I know many of you will be doing "secret" surgery to avoid the negativity of friends and family. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all had the courage to shout out to everyone and get only love and support back!

  2. I was told Isopure is a good clear liquid Protein that was good for post op. 40gm Protein and lots of flavors. A little expensive about $4.00 for 2 servings. Also found New whey, 42 grams, several flavors. I have not tried any of them yet. Also you can mix the non-flavored powder in with these or crystal lite so you don't use milk.

I laughed after I read this because $4 for 2 meals of protein is nothing considering what we pay for fast food. I was instructed at my pre-surgery meeting yesterday to stay with whey isolate rather that soy. You should get this info at your dietician or nutritionist meeting before surgery. If not, ask to see one.

  3. Pre-op bariatric information class today, received a lot of information on diet and what to eat through each week. Once I am on solid food, about week 4 I will be on only Protein until I lose 75% of my goal weight. All the Vitamins and supplement information all spelled out, quite impressed with the paperwork provided. Having a hard time sticking to the Protein Shakes which is discouraging since I only have 10 days till surgery. Every morning I swear I will stick to it, then by night I roam the kitchen. Just like every other diet I have been on. I know this is a learned behavior, need to unlearn it quick! Maybe I should start sucking my thumb just to have something in my mouth. Like the dietician said, the surgery is the easy part, we still have to watch and plan everything we eat for the rest of our lives.

  4. Rapid weight loss creates gall stones and removing the gall bladder prevents a further surgery. 25 yrs ago I lost a lot of weight in Jenny Craig and ended up having the surgery. Nutrisystem's and JC got sued at that time for not advising clients that of that potential. So having the gall bladder during the surgery is very common.

  5. I also have to lose over 100# I'm 272 and have a surgery date for RNY Feb 4. I would love to weigh 140 and at 5'5" that is a high normal. I know it will be a long year but I am so ready. It took 7 months to complete all the requirements and get a date. It's great seeing others with my BMI.

Has any one watched "Fat Doctor" on Youtube. It's a UK reality show about a surgeon and the patients having WLS. You actually see the surgery. It is well worth watching.

  6. I started the process in July, 13 and FINALLY have a surgery day of 2-4. The process took much longer than I thought and got very frustrated at some points. I literally had to put all my plans on hold because I never knew when I could get appointments or how long the results took to get cleared.

Most WLS patients I have talked to agreed it took 6-9 months before they actually had surgery, so I guess 7 months is normal.

  7. Ya!!!! Surgery date 2-4. Tomorrow surgeon pre-op, Friday Bariatric class. I am having a narrow silicon band put around the pouch (RNY) which helps keep the stomach from stretching, insurance doesn't pay and will cost me $375 plus hospital copay $100, worth every penny. Will keep everyone up to date. Need to start pre-op Protein shakes tomorrow till surgery,

    Best wishes to all!!!!!!

  8. :D Finally surgery date, 2-4. Started this journey 7-13, several bumps and delays along the way with depression and frustration. Needed to make repeated calls, some never returned until I called back, persistence won out and I have the MD pre-op tomorrow, Friday the Bariatric surgery (RNY) class and finally - SURGERY. Excited, anxious, restarting Protein shakes for pre-op diet tomorrow. Last meal a small one but don't want to overdue it.

Thank you to all who have read my rants and gave great support, will keep up the posts as I continue this big change in my life.

  9. Well guys, started a low impact Zumba class with my good friend and spent 45 min sweating like a pig, it felt so good and I am so bad at it there were times I just had to stand still cause I was lost. I have a hard time making my feet do something and my arms do something else. But had a ball. Monday is a "belly fit" class with low impact Zumba, yoga and strength all rolled into one. The more exercise I get before surgery the better. But I am NOT a morning person and I have to get up at 8:00 and that's to earlier for someone who is retired.

I was hoping to here from the surgeon's office with the appointment to met for the pre-op nutrition meeting then do pre-op labs but no word yet. Getting a little P.O. cause I can't make plans for the shoulder surgery until I recover from this surgery..

Oh well. Time for bed, hope you all have a great weekend and keep the faith!

    Sally

  10. Your husband is expressing the same thing most of us have heard the minute we start sharing what we are working for. Hopefully he will come around once he sees what you have to go through for the rest of your life. Please remember you are doing this for you, not him. You know you will be happier and healthier once you complete this journey we are all trying to go through. You have a lot of people on this website going through the same thing so look back the older posts and you will see how many had the same concerns. You have so much support, please hang tough!!!!

  11. I think being 65 is a lot different today that it was 20 years ago. I read an article about the baby boomers are more active because they are able to have repairs and replacements and expect to have things fixed and continue doing their activities. We don't go down without fighting!!!! I need a knee replacement after I lose 50# and shoulder surgery sometime soon. Losing weight is going to make both of these surgeries much safer and help me continue my wild and wicked ways (just kidding on the wicked part).

  12. Mary, I've been trying to get the surgery for several years but initially the insurance did not pay, then my PMD just ignored my request. I had to push him for the referral, I feel the same way you do, I don't want to spend the rest of my life fat and fighting everyday to diet, then feel like a failure when I gain again. I am active and want to stay that way, I just started a new Zumba class for beginners and love to do the Avon Walks.

Keep me updated, it took me from last July till now to complete the process of classes, tests, med clearances, and to lose the required weight. It has been a looog journey.

  13. I have done everything I was told, all the test, appointments, paperwork but it seems like I have to push to get information. I was told all paperwork was faxed and to call another number Monday. Called and was told someone else in the office would call me later (I assumed later in the day). No call, no call today so I called and was told that she didn't have me in the computer and would call me later. No call !!!!!! All I need is this meeting and the surgery date can be set.

I know I am an emotional eater and this makes it so much worse. I feel like I'm being tested. This has been going on since July and I can't plan anything, vacation, I need my shoulder operated, no fund raising for my Avon Walk. I need to be able to walk 26 miles in 2 days the first weekend in May. I goes I'm just running out of patience and know I have to hang on a little long. I did 1 week of the pre-op diet, had to stop because everything is going so slow, so I will have to do that all over again. Makes me want a double double hamburger with fries!
