  1. I had no drain and no catheter. I did have to administer blood thinner shots (Lovenox) for 10 days after surgery.

Other topics they will probably cover with you include:

    • What pre-op diet is required, and for how many days?
    • If the pre-op diet is to include Protein shakes (and most do) what brands are acceptable?
    • What are the post-op diet requirements? e.g., What will you be allowed to have while in the hospital, and when will you be progressing to the next stage, and the next?
    • If there is a post-op diet stage that calls for full liquids (and there probably will be) what constitutes full liquids? My doc/NUT said it's anything that would go through a straw, but they didn't want post-op patients using a straw.
    • What restrictions will there be on lifting, and for how long?

My surgeon's office had most of this written out in a booklet for their new patients.

    Good luck!

  2. I LOVE the Quest Protein bars! I get them online, at http://www.questproteinbar.com. I've purchased a few flavors at GNC or other retail stores, but found them to be fresher purchased directly from Quest.

The cost of the bars is about $2.00 each - can you beat that for a MEAL that is high Protein / low carb, portable, available on demand and tastes GREAT?

Thanks for the post about the new Cookies & creme flavor - I am definitely going to try it!

  3. You saw your NUT at 1 week post op and again at 7 weeks post op, and between those visits you lost 20 lbs, right? Well, 20 lbs in 6 weeks sounds GREAT from what I've read on this forum! I didn't lose that quickly, but I would have been thrilled if I had! My understanding is that people with a higher BMI tend to lose more quickly.

As long as you feel well - lots of energy, etc. - and you're following the plan, just keep on keepin' on! The pounds do drop more slowly as time goes on, so make the most of this rapid loss period.

  4. Excellent thread, Jenny12, thanks for starting it! I learn something new so often on this forum!!

And a special thanks to lsereno and suejersey for being so specific about a typical day's intake. I look forward to being at goal, and now thanks to you two I have a more clear idea what my intake during maintenance might be like.

  5. You might want to do a search for this topic - I've seen numerous posts about Protein shakes since I joined last fall.

My fave is Premier Protein, chocolate. I keep them in the coldest part of my fridge, and when I know I'm going to want one I take one out, shake well, and put it in the freezer. I leave it 25-30 minutes (freezer at home) / 55-60 minutes (freezer at work). At the end of that time I shake well and drink. I love the very-cold ice-shardness.

  6. Decrease carbs to almost none, at least for a while. That will help with the cravings, too. Then once you're losing again, be very careful about increasing carbs. If you increase them at all do it very slowly, and when the weight loss slows or stops, decrease carbs just a bit and you should start losing again. Then maintain that level of carbs or less as long as you want to keep losing.
