  1. Welcome ag1077,,,I will have my second anniversary in early July, and it was the best thing I have ever done. I had a starting weight of 274 ponds and have been over weight my whole life like most other folks. My big difference was I waited to long as I had just turned 68 years old. It was a majior thing to think about, but I made the right choice. Today I weight 162pounds and have maintained this weight for the past several months. No more blood pressure meds, gerd, or knee pain. I went from a 44/46 pants to a comfortable 34 now. I look and feel like another person. I even work 2 part time jobs and just turned 70. No regrets! Good luck to the new you!

    Icky Protein Drinks!

I will be 5 months out in 1 week and have tried them all. For me the GNC total lean premixed ready to drink was the best. It comes in 4/5 flavors and when you compare the size, 14oz bottles, its very economical compared to many of the others. it's only 170 calories and has 25 grams of Protein. I buy it by the case12 bottles] per and get an additional 50% off the 3rd case if I buy 2. Just join there GNC card program at no cost and you also get coupons for special pricing at GNC. To me the best protein drink out there.
  3. I went thru my medicare advantage plan and I had no stipulations as far as months on a weight loss program. My surgery was approved on the first try as I have had high blood pressure, arthritis and gerd. And I also had a BMI of almost 41
  4. My doctor recommended that I wear one for the same reasons, so emergency personnel would be aware that I am a bariatric patient. My simply states name, allergies I have if any, emergency contact name and phone # And states I am a bariatric patient. You never know when you are in a situation that you cannot converse with someone about your health info. This takes away the worry
  5. They all taste better cold. I have tried atleast six different brands since my surgery. I like the GNC brand pre mixed the best. Only 170 calories, no sugar , and 25 gram of Protein. And the best tasting of all the ones I have tried. I mix it with some ice and fresh strawberries and blueberries for a great tasting drink.
  6. Sorry another slip of the finger I meant "journey", not jouy. haha
  7. Sorry Boppin....fingers slipped. I'm a young 68 year old who is 9 weeks post-op and so happy I made this life changing decision. I am able to walk 2 miles each day with out the severe knee pain I have experienced for many years. I am also off my high blood pressure meds all together. Since my surgery day I am down 49 pounds and had loss an additional 12 pounds since my initial visit. Whilemy weekly loss now is averaging 3pounds, its still heading in the right direction. I had very little discomfort or pain. Overall it went very smoothly. Please keep me posted on your jouy, and good luck! I know you will do well.
  8. Hey Boppin.....Congrats on your decision to have bypass done.
  9. I am 5 weeks out from Gastric Bypass Surgery and I would like to know if what I am going thru is typical or not. While my weight has fallen off with no problem, I am having issues with getting more than 400/500 calories per day and getting over 4o grams of Protein. My taste buds are shot and I cannot seem to eat very much except things like pudding, Jello, and little Soup. chicken taste horrible , eggs once my favorite are no longer appealing to me. But i am able to keep refried Beans down OK. I am not having any issues with food coming back up, but I do experience a heavy rock feeling in my gut after eating. Has anybody experienced the same or similar? How long can I expect this to last?. My first visit with my nutritionist is still 2 weeks away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    really annoying feeling lately grrrrr

I too had my surgery in early July. While I have never had somebody tell me it was the easy way out, I understand your feelings. Some people are Aholes and have no understanding on what you are going thru to become a healthier person. And congrats on that terrific weight loss. We all know it was not easy to accomplish this. I am going thru the same thing with food taste. Everything taste and smells awful. I have had it with Protein bars, Protein shakes and sugar free pudding and Jello .I asked my doc last week how long this will last. He says up to several months , but every one is different. It could be 4 or 5 months, or even up to a year. Yippy coyote eh!!!

    Food taste

Thank you all for your imput and info. From everyone I have talked with its pretty much the same for everyone. . No one can tell me when it will change, and get better. All I ha that it will. I hope so. Today I went to a birthday party and a lot of different foods were being made and served. After 1 hour I had to leave because I was getting sick with the smells and I just made it home before I lost everyting. This stage of my post surgery sucks! But I know it will get better at some point. We just have to hang tough
  12. Good for you mondaylady!! I am 68 and a little over 5 weeks out from my surgery and i'm doing excellent. It's an adjustment but I found it will all be well worth it. Good luck and please keep me posted on your journey to a new and healthier you.

    Looking for November Buddies

I am not a November buddy but I am an oldie but goody. I am almost 5 weeks post op from gastric bypass surgery. I have lost 32 pounds since my surgery on July 8th. I went thru everything fine and had no problems what so ever. I am 68 years old and i'm living proof that you can do this and be successful! So go for it and I know you too will be happy with your results. Please keep me posted! And good luck.
  14. Good morning everyone.......I had my surgery on Tuesday, July 8th. I had very little pain and no real issues. I spent 2 days in the hospital and was released on Thursday afternoon. The only issue I had after discharge was my leg swelling up due to being off my meds for 2 weeks. This gave me problems for walking the first couple of days home, I did get back on my medication and with in hours I was feeling much better. Last Thursday I went back to my doctors to get the drain removed and have my 1st check up. Everything went well and I have lost my first 11lbs/in 10 days post-op. I am not having any real hunger pains, but the stage 1 diet is getting old very fast. The good news is that I move on to stage 2 eating today I feel great and am so happy I did this. And I should have done it 20 years ago. I'm 68 years old , so if there's any of my senior buddies wondering if you can do this, i'm proof you can! I will keep you posted on my progress and good luck to all of us as we embark and travel this new life together.

    Nothing tastes right

Hey pik.....I am a little over 3weeks out and my taste buds have changed completely. My usual crystal light does not taste the same. I've just tried a scrambled egg today [which is my favorite] and I could not eat any of it. The smell and taste was something I could not eat. I am able to get down some protein but not much of anything else. Water is so important in this journey. Try some sugar free popcicles to get your water, or even jello.
  16. I think we have all felt like you more times than we would like to admit. You have made the decision to be healthier and be around for your family. It took me as many years as you to wake up and realize that food was not my friend. I too am an emotional eater. I eat when i'm happy, when sad. I would eat when bored, whenever. Food was my crutch for everything happening life. I woke up 7 months ago and decided it was my time at age 68. My surgery was July 8, 3 weeks ago today. And I couldn't be happier. Down 25 pounds since surgery and 38 0verall. My knees aren't hurting, and I can move around with more energy. Go for it and you too will find the freedom and happiness you deserve. When those pounds start dropping and your aches and pains start to disappear, you will forget about the walls you had up to protect you. It is a big decision. but you will be so glad you you did it. Good luck on your journey and please keep me posted.

    Dr. Care

I saw mine at 2 weeks post op, then 1 month,3,6,9 and 12months. Then once per year for 5 years. I think its a complete support system in case I fall off the wagon..lol
  18. I have not had any stricture issues but as baconville said it can be easily corrected if I occurs. And as far as your so called friends go, I would find new ones. Real friends will support you whether they agree with you or not. As you embark on this life changing journey, get some new friends along with new clothes, if they will not support you. There are a lot of people here that support you and your goal for a healthy life. Don't let the others sway you. Good luck and in a couple of months you will be so glad you went for it.
  19. I would not worry about it too much. I too have bad knees and joints and rely on Meloxicam for daily relief. My surgery [gastric by-pass] was on July 8th and I was off my meds for 10 days before. I did use Tylenol and it helped somewhat. It was a week after surgery that I started to get severe pain in my knees. I put up with it for a day or so and then called my surgeon. He immediately gave me the OK to get back on my meds. I just had to crush them and add to my pudding. It was no big deal. With in hours I started feeling relief. Don't let that worry sway you. I am down 19 pounds in 2 weeks an feel great. Tuesday is my weigh in and I expect to be down another or so. Go for it! and good luck.
  20. I chose the by-pass because of my gerd and Barretts. From all I have read , and what my surgeon said, gastric was the best with my conditions. And I do not have the disipline to eat what ever I want. The first 2 weeks after my surgery [july 8th]I lost 19 lbs and feel great. And I fully expect to be down another 6 pounds or so on my 3 week anniversary weigh in. I personally feel I made the right choice. Good luck and keep us all posted.

    bypass verses sleeve?

I was in the situation. I felt all along the sleeve is the way I wanted to go. But after talking with my doctor, I chose gastric bypass for a few different reasons. I was diagnosed with Barretts, which was caused by gerd. .Also I do not have the disipline to control what I eat. As of today I am down 19 pounds in 2 weeks. The surgery itself went very smooth and with little discomfort. I am in the 60+generation and I felt it would be hard to break all these bad habits I had for years. So far the gastric surgery is making it much easier. .But it all depends on your health and what your doctor feels is right for you. Either way, I wish you the best of luck ambpete
