    5/2

Okay so in the vein of getting a veterans forum active again with veteran issues.... Talk to me about 5/2 people! I've read the past threads back before I really needed the info and have read a lot on the interwebs.... But anyone actively doing it? At 2.5 years out I'm no longer at my bottom weight... I'm still below goal but I miss being where I was and would like to drop the regain. Part of me knows it's vanity pounds and says don't even bother... I still run 30 miles a week finished my second marathon and fit in my size 4's but another part of me just prefers where I was before. So... Any advice on 5/2 or advice on whether those vanity pounds are even worth it? I have to work for those pounds while I can rather easily stay here.

    Sports nutrition questions

That's awesome!!!! Congrats! Blew away even your stretch goal!
  3. I got rid of stuff as I shrunk out of them. It took quite a few pounds to drop a size in the larger sizes, there are lots of threads where people talk about this so its not just me. Those sizes are more forgiving and literally can take 40+ lbs sometimes to drop one size. Once you're Into straight sizes it's more like 10lbs per size or even less depending on how/where you lose. I had some sizes I literally just about skipped over and had stuff I never wore--never was a 10! Skipped straight from 12 to 8. I kept one pair of my largest size jeans for the pix below and my favorite largest size top. Now I am wishing I'd thought ahead and kept a top I could style into a dress, the one I chose fits like a baggy dress but the style just doesn't work as a dress LOL. Passed everything else on to Goodwill and haven't regretted it! I am over 2.5 years out.

  5. I had some on my thigh for about ten weeks starting around 3-4 months out. Lots of blood tests for B12 and consults with a neurologist and electrical stimulation tests. Couldn't figure out what it was. And then it was gone. Never came back. Wish I could help more!

    Mixing protein powder

I mix my Quest and Syntrax matrix ones with water! I find them too thick when I use milk usually. Early out I used lactose free milk or fair life or Lucerne Protein plus milk which are ultra filtered they have a fraction of the lactose. Those helped me get more protein in than with plain Water because I have lactose issues as well. Just be careful of almond and coconut milks because most of them are sweetened! Make sure and pick one that isn't.
  7. You young un's in the low 200's shouldn't have any problems!
  8. Bwahahahaha!!!! Sorry. I've done yoga 3-5 hours a week since three months out. Like serious yoga. Like yoga arms muscles. Never did a thing for my skin, though the muscles filled out some of the space the far left behind. I can't even begin to understand how yoga could possibly impact skin. And I'm a yoga freak. You don't stretch skin during yoga, you stretch muscles, fascia and connective tissue. Also did all the lotions and potions, collagen, Vitamin D, bio oil and vitamin E oil; drank tons of Water and got all my Protein in. Took Biotin and keratin and vitamin A and E. You know what helps? Genetics, age, ethnicity, how many times you've yo-yo'd, how heavy you were and for how long. Time helps too. Skin will "come back" once you stop losing. How much depends on the things above. And surgery. A year out and six months at goal I had surgery. You just said yoga stretches the fascia, which is connected to the skin just under the skin. You can definitely improve your skin with yoga. Yoga helps drain the lymphatic system which helps with skin also. I would love to see some studies that support that. I truly would. I just tried to google and couldn't find anything. When you stretch the fascia (which doesn't happen automatically with yoga when you stretch the muscles, you have to actually actively manipulate the fascia, typically with a block or ball or a foam roller) it doesn't snap back smaller and thus tighten any skin. Skin gets stretched and the structure is broken down. Collagen builds both skin and fascia and perhaps there is the connection, but stretching fascia loosens muscles underneath it doesn't tighten skin on top. Again, I can see how draining the lymphatic system assists with body recomposition, but I don't see how it can fix torn and broken down skin collagen and structures. I would love to be proven wrong by some studies... I think yoga is one of the best things you can do for your body! I just, sadly, find all the evidence points to things out of our control for skin stretching. Any my own anecdotal experience bears that out. So without peer reviewed studies, I can find as many people to say it didn't help them as people who say it did. Please explain the science to me. My daughter has been advised to only do very limited amounts of yoga in very specific ways because of her collagen issues, so those studies show it hurts more than it helps skin or connective tissue with damaged or deficient collagen. Look up Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

  10. I track everything. I'm only getting 500 to 600 calories a day. It's also the 2 Oz maybe if turkey from deli. I didnt get them too thin the cheese is regular sliced. I use my scale and measure out 4 ounces but I can't eat all of that in one sitting so I go back and eat it for a snack. I'm just wondering if I should try to get more veggies and fruit. I know im not getting enough protein cus i cant eat that much in one sitting but I do go back to it. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App I don't understand why you are asking if you're eating too much if you can't get in all your protein. Clearly if you aren't eating enough protein then the answer is no. I still have to use Protein shakes and bars to meet my protein goals at 2.5 years out. Keep after it, 5-6 small meals that are protein rich do it for me!
  11. Are you tracking Protein grams, carb grams, etc? Do you know how many calories you are eating? Are you getting in all the recommended protein? It doesn't sound like too much to me, in fact sounds a little light on the protein depending on how much "a slice" is. Are we talking a thin slice of deli meat or a 2 ounce slice of turkey? Same with the cheese, are we taking a thin half ounce slice or a 2 ounce piece?

Anybody use a Powerplate for Toning?

Do you guys have local groups for pilates?.... i know we have them here where all the little purple haired old ladies go... they are normally really cheap and they go for tea afterwards.... quite social and totally cute! I also see a local tai chi group in the morning at the park... they look so silly, but look like they are enjoying it (Btw... i wasn't saying you are a purple haired old lady lol... just the ones that attend this group lol) Ha ha! Yeah I'm not a blue hair yet! Actually to be fair I have done Pilates mat classes it's the reformer classes I want to try, but even the group ones here are $50 a pop and I only pay $80 for unlimited yoga classes monthly at my yoga studio

    Hungry days?

Oh my god that could be it!!! I haven't taken my ppi for a week.. It's that isn't it Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Definitely possible!!!
  14. I too have subluxating patellas. It's a genetic condition my 17 year old daughter has them as well and so does my 34 year old sister. Yes the treatments are completely dependent on what is structurally wrong. I completely second the suggestion to see a sports orthopedist and find a sports physical therapist. The right PT is worth her weight in gold (both of mine are female). A good PT has been able to strengthen the muscles that keep my patellas in place to the degree that I run marathons. I also do high intensity yoga, I just have a few positions I need to make accommodations on. My daughter has and uses braces for both knees, she has three different types but I wouldn't begin to tell you which because her condition isn't yours and you might need something completely different. Heck she needs three types depending on what's going on with her that day (she also has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and a connective tissue disorder so she is complicated) Anyhow... There are lots of options out there for all the different issues.

    SO HUNGRY!

Some people experience acid as hunger, are you on anything for acid? I'm over 2.5 years out and my stomach rumbles and growls constantly these days totally unrelated to hunger. Has ever since surgery. At six months out if you are still unable to fit in all your Protein and Water I would worry about a possible structure and talk to my surgeon.

    Hungry days?

Often acid can be perceived as hunger, it's that way for me. Are you on a PPI or anything for acid?
  18. Ok I just did some math... Protein has 4 calories per gram. So if most of your 800 daily calories are protein even taking "most" as 3/4 that's 600 calories from protein which would be 150g of protein. What am I missing? If you are only getting 60g that's only 240 calories which isn't "most" of 800 calories.
  19. Yeah I was hoping someone had found some GOOD yogurt in a tube! And yes I tried to Answer for future thread readers as well as the OP. Two weeks out I would drink Water in a movie. It's the time to break old habits (movie = snack) and create new ones. Really we can go through a two hour movie without food.

    5/2

@@OKCPirate Thank you so much <<blush>> That's a really good point about aging...that is looming in my mind... Tomorrow is 47 for me, yikes! But I told my kids now I'm going to start aging backwards. I knew 5/2 was originally to promote longevity so it's good to hear that it helps with the aging metabolism. I had a good fast day Wednesday and yesterday wasn't exactly a fast day, but I did keep to an 8 hour window and 1200 calories. Today and tomorrow will be my "feast" days bc we are going out to an oyster bar for dinner tonight for my birthday and family mini party tomorrow. Hoping this 5/2 is what I need to stay on track. For me it's really very do able so far. We shall see as things continue. I'm waiting till a week out to try the scale again!

    5/2

I think it also depends on the build of the person i am 5'7 and have a muscular build.... i look sick, gaunt and just unhealthy if i go below 154. BMI is not an absolute.... there are too many variables.... height, build, body type, race, muscle mass etc plays a larger role. Eg. You could have 2 people who are the same weight and height and they look completely different.. what may look healthy on one of them can look different on the other Yes absolutely! Check out this site it's a good reference for that kind of thing: Www.mybodygallery.com I think I look healthy and fit and athletic. Here I am at 135. My body fat here is at the 17% level. My surgeon had a photo shoot done and I am in their promotional material (once and for all blew my anonymity as far as not disclosing my WLS) ImageUploadedByBariatricPal1467258576.644482.jpgImageUploadedByBariatricPal1467258600.523007.jpgImageUploadedByBariatricPal1467258619.315699.jpg Oh, Jess! You definitely look healthy and fit! You are a true WLS champ in my book. Thank you!!!
  22. For the third year in a row I'm running in an annual 4th of July 5k race put on by our local running store! First year I had to walk part of it. Last year I hit my first 5k under 30 mins. This year I'm aiming for a 5k PR which would be under 26 mins!
  23. Have you found any low sugar yogurt tubes? The only ones I find have a ton of added sugar. I would love to know a brand that doesn't!
  24. Omg LOVE Moon Cheese!!! But I can eat way too much of it. I do a Quest or power crunch bar, but definitely not yet. And I agree, learn to love the movie for its own sake! It's only two hours, you can go without a snack for two hours and break that hard wired pairing of an unhealthy snack with the experience!
  25. @@BigViffer is right on! That's my standby too (learned about them here). In fact I just had one with my Syntrax Matrix mint cookie powder because I realized I hadn't hit my 90-100g for the day. I don't always use non-dairy creamer, I use Water or sugar free torani syrup. And I often put Fage Greek yogurt as "frosting" or another no sugar added Greek yogurt. I also like to smash up a half banana into it for moisture. It does take work for me to get there as well. Constant vigilance. And I can't get it all in without supplementing. I do either a shake or a cake or a Quest or power crunch bar daily. Sometimes like today I do two. And I'm 2 1/2 years out! Greek yogurt is another stand by in general for me. I eat at least one a day (good for the bones too). Jerky (just make sure it isn't one like Krave that adds a LOT of sugar) cold cuts rolled up with a squirt of mustard and thin sliced cheese. Tuna with mayo or mustard or (again) plain Greek yogurt. I get frozen pre cooked shrimp with a little cocktail sauce.
