Dressing this new body
jess9395 replied to Daisee68's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I love thrift shopping!!! You can try all variety of styles for little $$ while losing and while finding your style! I've tried a bit of everything but now know my favorites--and what fits me and my lifestyle well. And now that k know that I finally shop at the full price retail shops -
Can someone explain PB powder, how you use it, benefits, etc?
jess9395 replied to LisaMergs's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I don't like that when they take the fat out they add sugar. I used to use it a bit, mixed with Greek yogurt as a dip or sprinkled in oatmeal or a protein shake... Now I just use real no sugar added peanut butter or Syntrax matrix PB Cookie protein powder -
You can go home, but you won't be in any shape to fend for yourself. And yes, the pain is much much worse and lasts much much longer. With my sleeve the "pain", if you can even call it that, lasted maybe 3-4 days? I was still recovering from my TT for probably a good 3 months post-op. The numbness and phantom pain/itching lasted at least 2 years. I would say it was a good 3 years before my scars were completely faded and the numbness and phantom pain/itching were minimal. But, don't get me wrong! It was totally worth all of that! Wait you mean there's still a chance the numbness will go away? I'm a year and a couple months out and still have numbness I figured it was permanent at this point! Get the phantom itching occasionally too

How restricted is your sleeve?
jess9395 replied to GetBack_095's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dumping syndrome is typically a bypass problem not a sleeve problem. There are a few sleevers who dump, but most of us don't. First of all, I don't understand why anyone would even try those things "early on" as you say.... But being over 2.5 years out I can speak to "later on." I was at a party about a year out and was desperately searching for something non alcoholic to drink and found "mineral water" in a bottle and poured a glass and drank some without realizing it was carbonated. Thought I was gonna die! Never again! Rice hurts also, even a few grains. Bread turns into a glue ball and feels icky... Toasted it's fine, as are crackers and such. Soft potatoes do the same. Haven't had noodles/pasta because I assume it's the same. Sugar I can tolerate more of than I probably should. Cookies and such are no problem. Fried is fine in the very limited amounts I do, I don't have an issue with one chicken strip or piece of fish and chips. Spice is fine too. -
Thrush After surgery?
jess9395 replied to Twinmom07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you certain its thrush? I thought I had it post op (my son had it as a baby and what I had seemed similar) but it actually turned out to be dehydration. White coated tongue can also be a symptom of dehydration, which is common post op. Google white tongue dehydration. -
In fact sometimes I find it even easier to to limit my food intake when I chose what goes on my plate like at a buffet instead of deciding this part I eat and this part goes home.
-
Yup! Nothing wrong with paying to be with your friends. Also no one saying you have to overeat at a buffet. I've gone to many since surgery over 2.5 years ago, never once overate. I have friends/kids/husband none of whom are overweight who like to eat there. I like their company. I'm willing to pay for that

Had my initial Plastics consultation
jess9395 replied to Chrystee's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Did the insurance cover any of the procedures Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App No and we tried too. Sadly my insurance has very specific rules about what it will cover (eg the pannus must hang x number of inches past the pubic bone) and I didn't meet those criteria. Showed pictures of rashes and such... Documented treatments. They still didn't cover a penny. -
Had my initial Plastics consultation
jess9395 replied to Chrystee's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Yea that was my guideline too. Stable at goal for six months. I had my surgery right at 18 months post WLS started my consults a month before that. -
Yay! And ha ha @@OKCPirate

You've got this! Haven't played it in years but back in the day....

Slider foods are those foods with little nutritional value that "slide" through our pouch or sleeve quickly and don't fill us up or keep us satisfied so we can eat way too much of them. Some common ones are chips, crackers, etc because they crunch up so small you can fit a lot in there and they are so nutritionally shallow that you digest them quickly and so they pass right through. Some foods are sliders for some and not for others. The worst are the ones that trigger the "can't eat just one" feeling in the person. Mine? Cheezits! Don't let me near them! But I can eat a chip or two and walk away. Don't even much care for them.

Ok so here's another way to look at it.... Say you'd normally order an appetizer for $5 or an entree for $15 and get three meals from it when you take home the leftovers. (Just rounding because my math is horrible, bear with me). So you normally pay $5 for a meal out. Let's say the buffet is $15 or even $20. This is a friends birthday right? Consider the $10 or $15 "waste of money" a gift to her. I just don't understand the need to get your money's worth in food. It's only $10. Pre op I'm sure most of us could have eaten $20 worth of fast food. Was that "getting our money's worth?" Nope it was getting us fat.

Take the opportunity to break yourself of the habit/conditioning that movie = snack. It will take some work, but you will be grateful later that this hard wired connection is gone!

First of all WATCH THE RICE!!! It can hurt like the dickens! Don't try it out at a restaurant the first time! Ok so here's my take on buffets and "getting my money's worth." The value in a buffet for me is VARIETY not QUANTITY. When I typically eat out I either share a dish or order a small plate or appetizer or side portion of Protein or even order nothing and eat off my husband and two kids' plates. Great! Fine! Except it means I don't often get to pick what I eat and almost never get to eat more than one thing. At a buffet I can literally have one small bite of 4, 5, 6 or sometimes (I am 2.5 years out) even more different items! I can sample a piece of protein from any number of mixed dishes, I can have a touch of this salad or that veggie. I can sample so many different things! To me that has become where the excitement is and the justification of the price tag. And of course if it's a party and I am sitting there for two hours, guess what, I do graze! I plan for it in my day and eat accordingly and then graze for two hours, sticking to the best parts--seafood, chicken, sashimi, etc. I will eat several bites, wait half an hour and eat several more. And I feel like saving it for the protein and stuff I don't get on a regular basis instead of filling up on noodles and rice (which still hurts my stomach so I actually don't even try anymore) I get more of my money's worth anyhow--eat the expensive stuff! Finally--the price is the price of the party and the companionship, not the food. Tell us how it goes!

Dreading the Nausea!
jess9395 replied to NewAdventure2016's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am awful with nausea and pain meds always make me nauseous as does anesthesia. I told my doctor that and he prescribed a scopolamine patch I put on the day before. They also had zofran "on board" in my iv when I got pain meds and sent me home with both zofran and phenegran. I had no nausea! Yay!! First time ever post op I didn't have it and I really think it was the scopolamine patch -
Different doctors have different ideas. Mine said occasional ibuprofen for a headache or something was fine but nothing on a regular basis. Others' doctors have said never again because of the risk of ulcers, with so little stomach tissue they can't really surgically remove any to treat a bad ulcer. So... As with everything... Do consult your doctor.
-
How long did you wait in between the two surgeries Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App The plastic surgeons I spoke with recommended 6 months at a stable goal weight. I hit goal at a year out and has plastics right at 6 months later. So 18 months from WLS.

We stayed at an offsite hotel when we did the last one--not Star Wars just the Disneyland race weekend over Labor Day. The rates were just insane on site. We were on the shuttle route and took that in the morning and walked back to the hotel after.

OK, not trying to be mean, but there actually are stupid questions lol
jess9395 replied to anniebanana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot is relative. Even if you do the no added sugar peanut butter like Laura Scudders a teaspoon (half of the serving size they list) is 6g fat 6g carbs and 4g protein. And the only ingredients in that are peanuts and salt. -
You will be glad you waited! I had my plastics in early June last year and was up to a half in October and that was pushing it! Trying to talk my family into the Star Wars one in April! We did the Labor Day one in 2014... Pricey but so much fun! Do you live local? We don't so we have to do the whole hotel thing. My daughter starts school down in the area in the fall... Maybe I could crash j. Her dorm room!

Well, I am doing it! 1st stop, Brachioplasty

So excited for you!!! I hope you are as happy with your new arms as I am with mine! -
Disney challenge? Anyhow I would say sorry but no. I had tummy tuck, Breast lift w implants and arm lift. My doc didn't want me to run AT ALL for six weeks post op and didn't actually clear me to run until week 7. And I recovered faster than most. So at best that would leave you only six weeks to get back up to half marathon shape. I couldn't have done it and I ran a full marathon a week before plastics and has been running a half marathon race each month up until then. Part of it is even if you are feeling up to it, you don't want to put any stress/pulling on the scars while they heal if you want the best possible outcome there. The other part, this is MAJOR surgery. Recovery is much harder and much longer than recovery from the WLS or a Csection or anything.
