PHASE: Limbo - What did you do differently?
So, I've finished/passed my 6-month physician monitored weight loss. Yay! I've had my initial consult. Yay! I'm scheduled for my 1st NUT appointment and psych eval (Nov 10 & Nov 11 respectively). Yay! I'm looking for a surgery date of early 2015. Yay. NOW WHAT????!! I don't have the "pressure" to loose weight for my insurance company, I'm not gaining weight but I'm not as careful as I was before. I'm a little terrified of the holidays coming and my 2 week liquid diet would start for another 2 months. The only reason I'm waiting for the start of the year is so that my flex-spending can pick up my out of pocket costs which would be about 15% and since my spouse is not working, we don't have that kind of cash laying around right now. And taking 3 weeks off during the holidays would be not so kind to my team (at work). I don't want to start the liquid diet too early and burn out...... Thoughts? What did you do during this time???? Its 11 weeks till the new year. The anticipation is killing me!!!

Average weight loss: worth it? Starting to feel discouraged...
@@Lauriep, I hear what you are saying. I had my initial consult and I had several things go through my mind. I had my heart set on the sleeve because the thought of having my insides rewired was scary. I was only choosing between the sleeve and the bypass oh and NOT HAVING SURGERY AT ALL!! And I do take ibuprofen for occasional pain from degenerative arthritis. The thing that got to me was IF I'm going under a general anesthetic to loose weight and halt some chronic disease processes, I want the procedure with the highest percentage of average weight loss. The thing about the pain, well at least the arthritic pain, it's an inflammatory process. So, there is a high chance that joint pain would significantly improve with improved diet, exercise and less weight. I've loss a considerable amount of weight before and maintained it for many years (on my own) and then I lost that control. And I'm here thinking that I could do it on my own but my ability to maintain weight loss is virtually impossible. Some weight loss, especially by big people can be easy (barred serious metabolic issues) but we all have the history of "gaining it all back and then some" that is a common thread in our story. There is gravity in the decision, but just remember to keep it real and be seethingly honest with yourself. Only you can decide. I don't know what you have gone through for your insurance co., you would definitely have to do all that again down the line.

What do I do?
Yes. Call your insurance company...

DISAPPOINTED & ANGRY
Have you ever lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks previously? Is it the TOM? Are you, could you be retaining water? Could you call the NUT for some perspective? I would also think for this that have had many attempts, I would say the body/metabolism needs time to catch up and that you've entered dreaded 3 week stall. Everybody had it, or so I've read here. There is actually a physiological reason for it.

Your response to: "but you aren't 'THAT' big!"
I'm not telling work for sure and I'm only telling the friends that I know typically have a deep direct spiritual connect that I want to know and that I want prayers and energy from sent while I'm on the table!!

Your response to: "but you aren't 'THAT' big!"
I just thought of another one I could use: My insurance company believes that my health status is a concern and a liability. I agree with them. They are willing to pay for surgical intervention. Again, I agree with them as other methods have proven unsuccessful....ha! That one might be for co-workers, tho.....if/when it comes up...

Your response to: "but you aren't 'THAT' big!"
I'm blessed to have my weight equally distributed on my body. No place jumps at you out more than the other...It's a legit blob over here.... But at the end of the day I'm still 38, with hypertension, borderline high cholesterol, and borderline diabetic. My mother has all full blown disease processes of all my borderlines, plus a pacemaker for afib. My father has all the diseases except he's not obese, just unhealthy and and an amputee due to complications of his diabetes. And people close to me know this (I recently told a close old friend)...The writing is on the wall...I'm on a one weigh ticket to destruction if I continue down this path (pun intended). And the response I get from are :you ain't even big enough for the gastric bypass!! My response in the moment and I've decided I'm keeping it: I've always dreamed of living to 100 and I won't get there like this. Not even close... What do you guys say when people say you are not big enough or are undeserving of weight loss surgery in some other way?

Sugar free diet yet against aspartame
I hear ya, and so contradictory to whole foods and healthier habits. I tried a sugar free pudding the other day and this what happened, in this order....(I'm presurgery mind you).....gag.........yucky after taste.... OK, I want another one.....mind says, I bet the one with sugar tastes better......where are my keys?.....Lol There are Protein powders sweetened with stevia out there. You could also make your own, but in terms of the ready to go convenience foods, artificial sweeteners rule the roost. But i have to be careful and follow the rules though at least at the beginning when the sugar free stuff is required. I know when I start eating real foods the restriction kicks in.....and no artificially sweetened stuff is required.....

My RNY surgery Oct. 13,2014
@@layknee Are you having surgery at the hospital you work in? If not, you don't have much to worry about. You don't Sr most of the staff again. But you are right, their is a prejudice against fat people in the medical field. Doctors talk about patients on the table all.the.time. Not all, but some do. Not only on the table but in the clinic, behind closed doors, too. This is probably not the case in bariatrics, but I work in Ortho and sometimes folks are insensitive. I chose a different facility/network for that very reason. Yes, there is HIPAA but that doesn't always stop gossip, ppl just cant look in your chart. I'm not keeping my surgery totally a secret but I didn't want everybody knowing all my business. Good Luck to you!

Thought I was all set on the sleeve until.....
Felt the exact same way. But apparently now they know that area, the left over tummy secretes gastric juices/enzymes that aid in digestion. They just meet up on down the line, so to speak....Lol
-
Thought I was all set on the sleeve until.....
Thanks. Me, too. I know it was part of the duodenal switch procedure, but I think what she was getting at was more surgeons have performed more rnys over the years and the sleeve has resurfaced as an option for the masses rather recently and yes both procedures carry risk for leaks, but the case of the sleeve it's such a loooooong surface area that could potentially leak versus the rny. Luckily, we're talking about exceptions and not the rule! :-)

Ketone in urine
I thought ketosis was a good thing for ppl trying to loose weight. Basically, you/we are forcing to the body to break down fat for fuel as opposed to carbs, releasing ketones....that's kinda the point, I thought. But do call your physician if you are concerned, maybe check-in with a nurse in the office or someone.

Thought I was all set on the sleeve until.....
I had my first consult with my surgeon today. It was informative and we spent minimal time together because I am relatively healthy and I think I had done enough research. I thought this was a pretty much a done deal, even though I knew a lot of reasons why ppl choose the RNY. But something she said struck me. She said if were to have a hypothetical patient with the bypass and sleeve that had a complication or a leak (rare, we know) and you lined up a group of surgeons and asked which patient they would choose to fix, she said hands down the surgeons would pick the RNY! She said a patient that has a leak with the sleeve is so serious and complicated that person may not be able to eat normally for a long while and its a long recovery. Because the RNY has been around for 40 years all surgeons know how to fix anything that could go wrong really well. And a leak in the sleeve is like "oh lord" 'hands-to-face'. She was being tongue and cheek, but for someone whose very concerned about potential complications and the risk of anesthesia, my ears certainly perked up. Her complication rates are exceptionally low. One leak in a RNY in 12 years of practice and none in the sleeve, although she is fixing leaks from patients who had the surgery out of state. For a person who has solely been trolling the sleeve pages pre-op, I'm definitely gonna be around here a little more until my decision is made.

Wish Me Luck!
I ain't even gonna lie, I could see myself doing something like that. I guess you didn't want surgery....today. That could change, no? have you made a list? Think about all the prep work you have done...And why you chose this path in the first place...I'm sure those on the other side would say this ain't for everybody......
