  1. Law, I had the same concerns that you did. I'm 5 weeks out and things have been different and it's been a huge adjustment. I have only regretted it once and it lasted a couple hours then I remembered why I did it in the first place. If you're not going in for the right reasons you'll be very unhappy. I looked at it this way: I had a nice, long relationship with food. I basically ate what I wanted for 28 years and it's all over. Time to move on. food isn't your friend, it doesn't care if it makes you happy, sad, fat, miserable or elated...so why do we care so much? Honestly, since my surgery, I feel free.

Amanda, I'm sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. I think that when you could eat whatever you wanted it was easier to push your feelings of unhappiness down, it was not that you were actually happier. I've found the mental aspect of this to be extremely challenging too but I can tell you seeing a therapist or counselor will help significantly. I'm sorry you have regrets and I hope you start to feel better soon.

laurenanastasia, I just copied and pasted this into a separate document for when I start having regrets or second guessing my decision. So true, food (nor my fat) is NOT a friend and I am ready to let go of my illustrious relationship with food.

  2. I'm in the same boat. I don't have specific numbers to lose, I just have to be smaller than I started at each consecutive weigh in. I'm not diabetic, so I know I'll be Protein Shakes and all green juice the last two weeks, maybe fish and greens for dinner. I'll definitely get a colonic or two. Desperate times..... I got a fitbit and upped my daily steps and stepped up the exercise. It's a necessary evil to get what you want ultimately. If the surgeon is not linked to your insurance, I'd also consider shopping around.

  3. Ok. Here is a good one. He mixed grilled avocado, cilantro, lime juice, salt and nonfat plain Greek yogurt into a tasty sauce/dip. He made a mini pizza on flax Lavash bread with ricotta, mozz, peppers, mushrooms, soy chorizo and the sauce. Amazing. I use the sauce on my one egg cheddar omelet and it becomes a gourmet dish. I use it on veggie patties topped with goat cheese. Incredible sauce.[/quote

    What's lavash?

  4. Using myfitness pal. Getting a fitbit. walking and standing as much as possible as uncomfortable as it is. tracking everything things keeps you accountable. i can't tell you how many times trying to figure out how I was going to log the bites I take off my kid's plate has stopped me from doing it. I have to really let go of my subconscious habit/need? of being the human garbage disposal!! Also, I try to keep gum in the kitchen to help me not take bites while cooking. I have a 3 month half-way in appt in a month and I'm nervous I've kicked it into high-gear this week.

  5. I'm sure this is 50 places on this site but its harder to search on my phone app - why no caffeine???? Lawd! I'm from Seattle and that's all we do! And ibuprofen? I know many of us have arthritis. In fact I have a rare and severely degenerative from. Ibup is way more helpful than Tylenol. How are people surviving? I need it to exercise.

  6. I'm almost mid way through a 6 month physician directed weight loss attempt for my insurance. They don't specify a number or percentage to be lost. You literally cannot be bigger than when you started and at the middle weigh in you have to be smaller than the first. I think my bmi was over 40 but I do have hypertension, too. I'm drinking Protein Shakes and chicken breasts. Exercise is hard at this weight but by any means....

  7. Penny24,

You got this. You would only be cheating yourself, it has nothing to do with the doctor. That said, my Protein shakes come in a carton so I can freeze them and cut them out of the container. You could blend with ice for a slushie experience??

Add a little cold coffee and ice for a bariatric- frappicino! :)

    Hi Everyone,

I have my surgery Tuesday (April 22nd), I have followed the pre-op surgery instructions given to me by drinking on the shakes (4 per day) and one black coffee. I feel really hungry. I am just wondering if I ate something (just anything) if the could cause the doctor to decide to not do the surgery. I just need something solid,

Has anyone else cheated this close to surgery?

  8. SnohoGal98296, leave it to the girl from the Pacific Northwest to remind us of stevia! I'm from Seattle. I kept thinking for some reason that aspartame was the gold standard treatment for obesity along with WLS......lol :) I can hang with stevia for sure.

Hi, do you have a Whole Foods in your area? They have tons of organic popsicles and stevia sweetened Protein drinks mixes that are all organic and I bet even vegan, tons of choices! If not, check online for organic naturally (stevia) sweetened items, Amazon has a good selection and there are tons of choices on MyBariatricpantry.com too. Google that stuff and I know you will find what you need.

  9. OK, sorry if this has been explained elsewhere. I just can't seem to get my head around this.

Why must I follow a 2 week pre-op diet that has a sole purpose of getting me into ketosis? I understand the need to shrink liver and start burning fat. Couldn't that be done eating a height Protein diet anyway? I ask this as I try to usually eat whole organic food. Suddenly shifting to Protein powders and artificially sweetened Jello is just kinda gross. I don't eat Jello anyway.

What would it hurt if I had a few small pieces of lean sushi (no rice)?

    Thanks!

    Jason

That's what I'm saying. I'm scared about eating sugar free foods, sucralose and all the chemicals. I eat a lot of whole organic foods (I just eat a lot!) Obviously, I'm pre-pre-op

  12. Do you have any issues at all such heavy or irregular periods, pain in back, knees, feet, depression, pain on your heels, SOB, etcetera? Think of anything at all!

I had a BMI of 38 when I started and minimal comorbidities, the dr actually had to search but not too hard cuz I had sleep apnea. Also you can use your family history if they have anything heart disease, diabetes, etc...

They are finding that it is actually cheaper to treat obesity with surgery than to wait for the co orbiters such as heart disease, diabetes, etc.. So I would talk to your insurance company before deliberately putting weight on.

Or as suggested try layering your clothes or a little weight in your bra.. I understand your extreme desire to have the surgery and would do anything to have it done as you are willing but hopefully you can find away without actually putting weight on!

At the very least guzzle as much Water as possible before you weigh in to! You would be surprised how much Water you can hold and how much the scale can increase!!

I would definitely go the route of not actually gaining weight! I know some obese people are without symptoms health wise but I'd hardly call it healthy. What about a milkshake the night before a fasting glucose? ? Prediabetes? One of the stipulations of this pre auth phase for me is that I can't be heavier than when I started.

  13. Thanks, good tips. I still think I will miss being able to dive head first into a salad. I'll have to be one of the folks who eats real food, tho. Its less tempting for me. A Protein bar will feel like a candy bar. And obviously, I could eat more than one in a sitting. And sugar-free foods makes me want to jump off a bridge into a vat of whatever the "real food" is. Oh well, here's hoping my tastes buds change after surgery.

  14. So, what is your typical day like food wise? I am at about 8 months post op and down 106 lbs since the beginning of my journey. About 85 lbs. since surgery day. I have a basic routine as far as what I eat but I am curious what everyone else does. I am still loosing but not like I want to. I am still doing my walking and bike riding but want to expand on my meals. Here is a typical day for me:

2 scrambled eggs and turkey sausage link for Breakfast.

Protein shake on the way to work.

    Protein bar mid morning.

    2.5oz tuna pack for lunch

    protein bar midafternoon

dinner varies but always high in protein like turkey, fish or chicken.

Protein bar or shake midevening but never after 8pm.

I drink minimum of 5 16oz bottles of Water thru the day. No tea or soft drinks or coffee.

Does this sound ok or any suggestions on kickstarting again and moving the scale south some more? Also started more exercise as well.

Hey everyone, I'm far from surgery but as I read through people's food, I'm wondering where are the vegetables? I know the focus is on getting enough protein but I'm sitting here eating my lunch of a marinated kale (2 cups) with steak (4 ounces) and avocado a few dried cherries, do I have to say good bye to eating like this with the sleeve? Can anyone eat lettuce or salads still post-op?

  15. I'm the same boat you are in except, my insurance requires 6 months. I've been having a difficult time since my 3 yo daughter had to have surgery last week. My sleep is getting slowly better as she is recovering. I started weighing and tracking my food on MFP, walking on lunch breaks and then again on the treadmill at home. At least if I don't loose weight, they can see exactly what I've been eating. If I'm not loosing weight doing all this, I must really be metabolically challenged and desperately need surgery. I think I'm loosing tho.

My insurance requires me to be on a diet for 3 months prior to surgery. I have been going weekly to the hospital I'm having surgery at attending nutrition classes, tracking my food, exercising etc. I've not lost one pound and I only have 3 weekly classes left! I know I'll lose on the all liquid diet, but I feel frustrated that I'm doing all this and still can't lose. I guess this proves a point as to why I should have the surgery in the first place! So I guess if the insurance wants to really make sure I can't lose it the old fashion way I have plenty of proof for them:)

  16. I am about 1/2 way thru my 6 month wtg period with BCBS. I've lost 46 lbs. Best advice...+++ Protein... small meals...no carbonated drinks..I was limited to 1500 cals a day. I was so mad when I found out I had to wait but it will better prepare me for the life change that's coming!!

46 pounds? Holy lord, but I guess that could happen dropping to 1500 cals per day. Congrats on your efforts

  17. Hey everybody,

I have a provisional acceptance into my insurance's bariatric program (Regence) and I have to loose weight over the next 6 months in order to qualify for surgery. What are some of the things people have tried who’ve been in a similar boat? Are there any resources on this site for what I’m calling a pre-auth vs pre-op diet. Thanks

PS. This is my first post after having lurked for a several weeks.
