Black bypass patients and high blood pressure
MisforMimi replied to MisforMimi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me, MsUjima. As of now, I only have hypertension and I know the longer I remain overweight the greater the chance I have of developing diabetes or other comorbities, but I'm really hoping this would resolve the hypertension, but right now that feels like a cramp shoot. Although, when I've lost weight previously my blood pressure did go down considerably. I don't know. I was younger then. Good stuff for me to think about. -
I need to find out the same thing...I have used a liquid tincture at the natural health section called cramp bark not bad with a heating pad, but you'd need a physician OK. I'm preoperative but lying in bed with a premenstrual back ache and horrible insomnia.....ugh...

Little off topic... but are they any down sides to pot after surgery?
MisforMimi replied to pinkbunies's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lord, here we go.... I think there is nothing wrong a very occasional use of marijuana. I don't think she was inquiring about daily usage. My answers/responses would be very different if so. Rather than argue about the benefits, I think it's legalization will go along way in balancing the racial injustice in the penal system over time. But we don't need to get deep into politics in this forum. I supported the passage on many levels. It's enactment is not what was hoped for, but this is the case with many laws that go into effect. Everyone in support of the bill are not big stoners ***says a person who has used it ten times in 40 years***...... Another option would be to consult her doctor. -

In states where it is legal you have the benefits of consulting with experts and even physicians about the different strains and side effects. There are strains that can be used for different medicinal properties. Some increase appetite ie munchies and some do not. Some strains are used for sleep etc etc etc I would be frank with the person operating the dispensary that you are a bypass patient or whichever I can't tell on my phone and that you absolutely cannot eat after ingesting and they should be able to steer you in the right direction. Take it slow. Avoid getting THC laced foods and you should be fine. You will be absolutely amazed at how different it is and less taboo out is in a legal state versus the rest of the country. -

Unprepared for this complication
MisforMimi replied to tammygRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Wow. I am truly sorry to here about what you are going through as well as your family and medical team. And I'm depositing this thought here because I know people who are pre op read about complications to know about possible eventualities. We are all deciding about the gravity of the decisions we are making and I just feel that something my surgeon said to me is relevant here and I've said it before. My surgeon specializes in laparoscopic procedures, works at a Center of Excellence and lots of uncomplicated procedures under her belt. You had mentioned that being short may have contributed to some of the complications but also there is an element of statistics here too. We all know that there is that 1-2% severe complication rate and some of this is drawing the short straw and this does not make it any less horrible. My surgeon said if you lined up a group of bariatric surgeons and asked if they would choose to fix bypass complications and sleeve complications, she said hands down they would choose the bypass because the surgery had been around long enough and most surgeons were more versed at fixing complications associated with the bypass. And sleeve surgeons would have have their hands planted in their palms. She said that most surgeons are not well versed in fixing complications with sleeve simply because they don't have the volume of experience under their belt. We all owe you a huge thank you because maybe in your experience bariatricians will learn something that will save someone from having to go through this down the line. Maybe there is something simple and effective that they will learn or a major contraindication that will eliminate this issue from people ever having this complication again. With the volume of people having procedure, that is becoming a significant number. So, thank you. Hang in there. We are all rooting for you! -
One of the things my surgeon wanted me to do was to have a meal with a person that had had the surgeries I was considering. It was my homework assignment. Ironically, I had done that before seeing her. I had dinner with a guy 3 months out from the sleeve and one year out from the bypass. Granted the time they were postop made a huge difference, but it definitely swung me toward the bypass. He could eat a cup of food, was more compliant than the sleeve and seemed happier. I'm also basing this on the knowledge of the individuals too....I don't know but maybe it could be enlightening for you somehow.....

I ordered the Fitbit Aria Scale today....#weightlossgadgetgeek

OK. I'm about 85% sure I'm choosing the bypass, but I keep hearing that the sleeve removes the part of the stomach that secretes ghrenelin, the hunger hormone, while the bypass leaves the stomach to secrete hormones, enzymes that aid in digestion etc etc..... On this site, sleevers always chime in about the ghrenelin and how they're never hungry. Tell me the bypass decreases hunger too? I know everyone is different and most successful folks can distinguish head hunger from real hunger, but walk me through a typical day of hunger sensations of a bypass patient. Please and thank you.

Let's talk hunger: sleeve versus bypass

@ I'm sure your journey is well-documented on BP but why did you end up with the revision? For reflux issues or was the VSG proving to be ineffective at weight loss over time?? -

MisforMimi replied to MisforMimi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@@Jonathan Blue This is such good news. I even saw the instructional video from my surgeon last night and it mentioned the ghrelin thing in the VSG portion as a huge selling point but not the bypass portion and I was like I know people with the bypass aren't sitting around hungry with a stomach the size of an egg!!! -
Birthday was Oct 26th, surgery in December or January!!!! Woooooooooooo!!!!!

OK. This is the first before and after where I'm like shut the eff up! Holy crap, girl! Even got a little teary. I hope you are as healthy mind and spirit as you are projecting! Wow. Congratulations, I hope I have the courage to see this to the end. I'm on my phone and I can't see what surgery you had but who cares. Just the thing I needed to see on my birthday and pre-op! Great job! -
That's seems like quite an investment to remedy constipation, and like you may just want 'juicing' as part of your regimen. Let's be clear, what you are describing is a smoothie, not juicing. By blending fruits and veggies with skins in tact and so forth you are mitigating a lot of the sugar with the fiber as opposed to juicing (extracting juice from fruit/vegetable). However, that happens with normal people with no surgery. I would double and triple check with the NUT because that may not be the case for us anymore. Flax seeds alone can be blended with water and some of the approved water enhancers. You will still achieve that gelatinous substance that will move out poop in some people. For some is not even that effective. Or you could drink slippery elm tea...It's an herb that is usually in throat coat teas or drink/take a laxative. Again, why purchase kitchen equipment for constipation???? Just seems like a vague area that could impede weight loss unless you are willing to go completely with all (dark leafy) green vegetables which most are not.....good luck.

thinking about gastric bypass surgery
MisforMimi replied to Lisa1171's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey. Welcome. I agree with the others. I say call your insurance company first before getting your hopes up if you're not planning to pay for this yourself. The ins. companies run this game and they will have hoops for you to jump through. I have great/honeymoon examples, fair examples and just plain old noncompliant and horrible examples of people with this surgery. Oh yeah and some stellar veterans from this site. I think it's up to the individual. If you/we can get the support needed and are really ready to take on the task of discovering and coming to terms with how we got here....I think it will be OK. -
How I Prepare for Surgery Part 3 - My Soul
MisforMimi replied to Jonathan Blue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gaaaaaaaah!!!! Jonathan! I've been following happily along with this series and this the one I've wanted to skip. I have truly not wanted to go full into the depths of these questions. I've been more wanting to think about how I will make a weekly date for grocery shopping and food prep, how I could avoid taking my blood pressure mediation, how I would avoid getting my toes or legs cut off, how I could get down on the floor with my 4 year old, the list goes on and on. But for the morbidly obese and relatively young (I turn 38 on Sunday) and relatively healthy, I've only got two disease processes threatening me (arthritis I acquired very young) and high blood pressure, the process has not been so much thinking if the risk outweighs the benefit in the moment but more like if I continue down this path toward more weight and health complications THEN does the risk outweigh the potential benefits?? The answer is Yes. All day every day. But what about the time between the now and then? I'm having a hard time admitting defeat accepting that in all these years I've only gained it back. But again relatively young and relatively healthy NOW. It's this decision making based on forward leaping, or the fast forwarding that I get stuck on sometimes. I think I've accumulated a fair amount of luck in this life, resilience or some people call it. My grandmother lived til she was in her nineties and her heart just slowed to a stop one night. The diseases of my parents are lifestyle diseases, sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol- loose weight and they go away. No-one other than my grandmother has died in my family. No complications with surgeries, no infections, no problems with anesthesia, no cancer, no systemic lung, heart, kidney problems. Nothing. The odds feel stacked in my favor, but statistically I feel like I'm knocking on wood.....don't want to get lost in the gravity of it all, but these are things I need to think about. So, thank you. -
How do I tell work I am having surgery?

FMLA restarts every calender year. So, you could run it through the end of the year -
@RJ'S/beginning See, that's awful. Yes, medical professionals don't like to "touch" another persons/surgeons work , but was rude, unsympathetic and uncalled for. I work in the medical profession (for now) and I hold us to a higher standard of care.
