melhealthy reacted to DLCoggin in How to get back on track -13 years after my bypass?
I started logging shortly after my surgery so I've been logging for almost two years. I didn't find it difficult to get started. You're excited about the surgery. You're committed. Motivated. But in all honesty, I think everyone goes through a period, sooner or later, where logging gets tedious. I've found it helps tremendously to give yourself an occasional break from logging. For example, I usually don't log when I'm on vacation. There's never any doubt in my mind that I will resume (it truly is addictive), but taking a break is relaxing and a breather from the normal routine. That's what vacations are all about!
Another thing I've found is that the longer you log, the more valuable it becomes. Logging immediately after surgery helps keep you on track following the protocol. But your choices are limited. It's when you're back on a regular diet that logging really starts to shine. And unfortunately, it's when a lot of folks stop logging. It's all too easy to fall into the "I've got this, it's all downhill from here!" trap.
It's only when you progress back to a regular diet that you begin really making your own food choices. You start to understand your new relationship with food. And logging changes that relationship in ways you never imagined possible. You discover that you really are in control. You discover that you really can enjoy that special occasion, that special meal, and get right back on track. Your confidence soars. You come to the realization, often for the first time, that you really can manage your weight. And that's reinforced, every day, again and again and again. For me, that is the very definition of the all- important - lifestyle changes.
Is it easy to make it a habit? I don't know that there's a one size fits all answer to that question. But the reality is that loggers are in the minority. Many start, get tired, bored, frustrated - fill in the blank - and stop logging. Losing weight takes commitment. So does logging. Bypass surgery is a tool. So is logging. Tools are not synonymous with "easy". They are synonymous with "easier". In my mind, the more tools I have, the easier it becomes to reach, and to maintain, my goal. I believe that logging made it easier for me to lose more weight, lose it faster, and maintain my weight. And I think that those who make the commitment will discover the same. Simple as that.

It will move (the scale). In my monthly RNY support group, the nurse, told us to weigh ourselves everyday, because if u don't, you could easily fall off track as it pertains to intake of water and protein...I did it and it helped me. But what I found out, many folks doesn't like this idea.

Today makes 2 months since I had RNY surgery (11/18/13) and I have not weighed myself in few weeks. Well not so good news, at my 1 month weigh-in I was down -16.6lbs and today I am down -20.6lbs total. That's only a 4lb lose in a month!!! Well I know that I hadn't exercised in the past month and I just started a few days ago. Frustrating but fixable!!! So the only thing to do is to keep on the path and focus on Water, nutrition and exercise. At least the scale is moving in the right direction!!!

Perhaps we can take just a minute and examine your expectations - your perspective if you will. You've lost 55 lbs in 18 weeks. An average of three pounds a week. You're currently at 223 lbs and your goal is 165 lbs. So you have 58 lbs to goal. So if you maintain an average loss of three lbs per week, you will be at your goal weight in 19 weeks. So let's fast forward 19 weeks.
Starting weight 278 lbs. "Current" weight 165 lbs. Weight lost = 113 lbs. In 37 weeks. In just over nine months, you've changed almost every aspect of your health and your life.
Slow weight loss? I'm thinking spectacular! You are half way to your goal in 18 weeks! Discouraged? I'm thinking ecstatic! Problem? What problem?
Stay positive, stay patient, continue to follow your plan regardless of what your weight is doing. Stop second guessing. Trust the process. Allow your body to find its own way in its own time. Do those things and the weight will take care of itself.
You are doing GREAT! Celebrate your success every day! You're gonna love the new you!!

I weigh myself daily. Now that my weight loss is slowing, I need to weigh daily just for accountability reasons. I have not let myself get obsessive about it and once I get off the scale, I don't think about it until the next day. I never weighed myself before I started my WLS program and I know that is part of the reason I allowed myself to get up to 270lbs. I won't let that happen again.

Since I got married in 1982 there has been not much time for friends. Friendships take time to nurture and maintain - time that family life often doesn't allow. My husband has been my constant friend and my grown children are now my friends. Other people who I have called 'friend' over the years have been friends of convenience - people from various jobs, parents of my kids friends, people from school, neighbors with shared interests, and one friend I met while walking my dog because we both had Basset Hounds and loved them. They have come and gone as our schedules/interests/locations have changed. I have loved each of them and sometimes still see them and am very happy when I do. We catch up, promise to get together (and sometimes really do), exchange a hug, and go on our way. I am fortunate to have lived long in a small community and have made many 'friends'. :-)
Twice I have had 'friends' who turned out to be bad choices. Immature, jealous, and vindictive people who have used me and hurt me. I learned a long time ago that people like this don't matter even a little bit in my life. The people who REALLY matter are the ones I go home to every night. Theirs are the only opinions that matter to me, the ones whose good opinions I want to keep. They are the ones who know me, love me, support me, and would never do anything to hurt me.
If someone hurts you they are not your friend. You don't need people like that. You deserve better and more importantly, you need to BELIEVE that you deserve better. Be strong, be proud, and be happy! Soon you'll meet people who will like and appreciate the person you are now. The happier, more confident you!. :-)

My child's daycare director didn't recognize me today. I haven't actually seen her since May shortly after surgery. I knew she was acting weird when I was waving at her but as she got closer she started waving and told me she didn't know who I was! That was prob truly the 1st person who told me they didn't recognize me! It was a awesome moment. I won't ever forget it.

After surgery I have much more confidence to start dating again and I have since started dating a great guy. Today I realized as he laid his hand on my leg how little my leg looked compared to his big man hands! I am not use to that feeling of being appropriately smaller than the man I'm dating and it is a wonderful feeling!!

I am 10 years out.. I've stayed at 150 for 10 years... If I had to do this journey all over again... I'd do it in a minute... I don't push the surgery on anyone... it is a very personal decision. I've only approached 3 women in 10 years to look into it... there complaint: I would rather do it myself... the right way... all had families all had babies... found out a couple of years ago... all three women died... all heart attacks.. this surgery is not a cure for obesity... it is not a cheat either... its a tool.. this surgery saved my life... I promise, I am a very up beat person... but I've been holding this in for such a long time... it feels sooo good just to release it...
