  1. We moved this past year from Colorado to Arizona, my nurse/nutritionist at my previous doctor's office said that we could only take bariatric Vitamins like Bariatric Advantage for RNY. My current nutritionist says that taking Flinstones are ok, so I am confused. I asked my doctor and he said flinstones, but didn't state the amount....Everything I read online says childrens vitamins are not ok and I would have to take 4 daily. I am trying to make the most of my RNY on 02/06/2013 and some of my Vitamin levels are on the low side, but I don't want to have to pay for just a name. I don't mind spending the money if the bariatric vitamins are indeed better. I am just curious what vitamins you are taking and how many per day. ASMBS has some guidelines but its a lot of number crunching, not that I am trying to avoid it, its just a little confusing. Here is the link http://s3.amazonaws.com/publicASMBS/GuidelinesStatements/Guidelines/bgs_final.pdf I just want to be prepared for my next visit with the doctor to discuss my options and to do what will be best for my body. Any suggestions or comments are welcome Thanks, Tara
  2. Hello, I had RNY on 02/06/2013, lately I have noticed everytime I drink my Protein shakes I have a hot flash within 30 mins of eating, its quite uncomfortable. I have also noticed having night sweats. Doing some research into whey protein its common on some other boards. They state that Whey can make your hormones off, I am not quite sure if this is the case. I have an appointment on the 6th of June with the RNY Doc, so I hope I can figure it all out before then. Have any of you gone through Hot Flashes after eating? Concerned that it is the Whey I am looking into Soy Protein. Do you have any suggestions on a good Soy Protein Product? I guess I just want to be on the safe side before I start a product. Last questions, does anyone know if taking Soy will affect my Thyroid? or how it affect the Thyroid? Any advice is much welcomed. Thanks all, Tara
  3. Mary, your body will hurt for a while if your still actively losing weight. Your muscles have to adjust to the new size. For me I am losing weight really slow, only 40 lbs in 5 months so its been easier on me to adjust to the changes in my body. Which is also nice as I seem to have more fibro flares as well. I have another friend that had surgery the same time I did (within a week), she has lost 95lbs and she says her body really hurts. She commented the other day about her hip moving while she walked...anyway so its quite normal to be feeling bad while your actively losing weight....Good Luck
  4. lol, sorry I spelled it wrong its Ketoacidosis...it happens to diabetic people when they go into starvation mode, although ours is not from diabetes, but that is what a nutritionist described it as...anyway you sweat, it stinks pretty bad at least that is how she described it to me, she had RNY too...it doesn't happen to everyone, and only lasts for a little while, and you will know if you get it so don't worry too much
  5. I have fibro, I too am sensitive to smell, but mainly to my Protein. I am ok if I drink it through a sippy cup or through a straw, I even plug my nose on occasion if I have to drink it out of a cup. Its not so bad. Sometimes I feel like the smell is stuck in my nose, its kind of like a burning sensation, but you never know what the true sensation is because of the fibro. People that have had RNY tend to smell bad from kesetosis, its only for a little while while after surgery, but it comes out of your pores so you will stink for a few months. I keep a can of air freshener close by all around the house because after surgery, from having our guts rearranged you tend to get really bad smelling gas too. I also have a few yankee candles that I am ok with mainly fresh smells like Clean Cotton, Sweat Pea....Like you, I can't stand really strong smells but if its a light smell its ok. One thing I have noticed since surgery is that I am having more flares than normal, I have had to cut back on the amount I am working out, but as far as I know its just me. I was working out 15-30mins daily before surgery and have to cut that to every other day. I feel like I am in a rut, I workout, flare, then recover....
  6. I actually take Celebrex which is an NSAID, I just make sure to sandwich it in between some food. My Doc is aware of me taking it and I haven't developed a ulcer or anything, but I make sure to take my Nexium everyday. All my Doc said is to give his office a call before I take anything. With the exception of Tylenol or Acetametiphin, thats ok for flu or colds. Really we should consult the Doc before taking anything anyways you never know how it will react with other meds or even your new rearranged insides. Your Regular Doc should understand what will have an adverse affect on your tummy. For most RNYers its no NSAIDS as they can eat the stomach lining. Motrin or Ibuprofen is usually the only over the counter NSAID you can get. Personally I think as long as you keep both your Primary Doc and WLS Doc in the loop as to what your taking you should be fine....Best Wishes

    Band to RNY..first steps

Well I had my Lap Band done about 4 years ago, back then they were really pushing the Lap Band, we are military too. I didn't want to see a military Doc for any type of surgery, I have heard way too many stories about things going wrong. Well the providers that I had a referral for all pushed the Lap Band really hard, you had to be a part of a study, but you can get a bad Doc either way I guess. I was told it was the healthier way to go, pretty much lied to. When I started having issues I would go in and he wouldn't even run any tests just said to do better next time, with weightloss and heartburn. I got to the point I couldn't stand to eat hardly anything besides milk products. My Doc which was in Colorado Springs, said that they would never remove the band and that it would be a part of me for life. I just didn't feel right, we moved and it was later found that I had gallbladder issues, I had a hiatial hernia, that was not corrected before surgery so I got a double whammy from heartburn. I kept telling the Doc something wasn't right. Well my first visit to the new Doc after we moved, he sent me for a scan that afternoon, and it was also found that my band had slipped. I was so angry about it, but then I decided to upgrade to RNY. Once they did the surgery, which they removed my gallbladder and Lap band I felt soo much better. I didn't realize how much pain I was actually in from Lap Band cause when they took it out it was such a relief.
  9. I like nectar unflavored (powdered), I make up about 60g in the morning put it in the fridge, Protein tastes better cold , using this recipe: 1/2 cup milk 1 1/2 cups Water, 4 Tbsp No Sugar added Nesquick, or I use 2 cups water and crystal lite (any flavor). I eat breakfast lunch and dinner, and drink my shakes for a snack between meals. Today I had peanutbutter toast (breakfast 7g protein), 8oz Protein shake (snack 30g premade protein shake), 4 slices of turkey lunchmeat and an orange (lunch 8g protein), 8oz protein (snack 30g premade protein shake), and dinner with the family serving porkchop (deck of cards in size), broccoli 1/2 cup and a couple of bites of plain wheat rice (dinner 10g protein). So today I got about 85g protein. RNY 02/06/2013
