I had a Tummy Tuck this past February. It was no cup of tea. For a month I pretty much had the movement of an 80 year old woman. However after 8 weeks I was perfect. I loved the results! I went down a few sizes in jeans and I'm not embarrassed about my stomach anymore! I'm looking into doing more cosmetic procedures soon.

I wish I had this ap when I first had surgery. It would have been great to get his kind of support! I am 5 years out and SO so happy! When I went in for my gastric bypass I was a solid 300 lbs. In one year I lost 160 lbs. Today I am 5'4 and a very proud 115 lbs!! Ahhh! If you had asked me 5 years ago if I thought I'd ever get to this point I'd probably say "psh! I wish" Well here I am!! I've never been so happy. It's all the little things are so great. Like wearing belts and tucking your shirt into your pants. Being physically picked up. Riding in airplanes or roller coasters! Shopping! Sharing clothes with friends! Jumping up and down. Going to the gym and not feeling like everyone's looking at you!
My whole journey was a roller coaster of emotions and finding out that I really and truly am addicted to food. Like a drug. Am I over my food addictions? No. It's something I'll always have BUT I am in control now. I know when enough is enough.
I've had so many cool opportunities come my way because of losing weight. I actually got into some small modeling rolls. I've modeled wedding dresses and been in a Paul Mitchell hair show. I've played the main characters in plays and musicals. I found my husband...seriously the list goes on.
Anyway, I just realized today how far I've come. I am so proud! Best decision I ever made!

She knows she's not doing the right things. She is asking for help, not someone telling her she doesn't deserve sympathy. We all struggle and slip up.
And I'm not saying your strategy is bad - again - I think that way myself - but I'm telling you it's not the right strategy for everybody and it came off angry and negative, despite the fact I know you were just trying to help in the best way you knew.

I understand the need for directness but its not at all okay to tell any one of us that we don't deserve something. While I'm sure you meant well, there are ways to be both truthful and supportive.
That kind of "Tough sh*t" thinking is definitely helpful to some people (myself included) but it can actually be harmful and counterproductive for a lot of people, like a few members of my WLS support group.
Swilkins, you can do this, and there are many strategies that will help you find success. I'm cheering for you to find the one that works best for you. It will be hard. But believe in yourself and love yourself.

None of us are saying its okay. Which one of us has done that? We're telling her she can do it, she can make the right choices. I need to withdraw from this. Maybe we need to agree to disagree : )

Wow....people...people...take a deep breathe. I think the reason swilkins is here because she knows she is making bad choices. She needs support not slapping. Here is a place where we can go to confession. And be loved and lifted up, not beaten up like we were in our past lives. We were heavy for many reasons. But yes, one soda every day, 150 cal every day, 365 days a year adds up to over 45,000 extra cal per year which blossoms to over 15 extra lbs per year alone.(approx weight gain...the actual numbers are higher...don't slap me cause I am sitting in the dark with no calculator.)
If we get to 150 lbs...this is 10 percent body gain per year. Ouch....
Every time you want a soda come here. We all walk with you....and add no calories...lol

I start everyday saying today "Today will be a better day both emotionally and physically." It reminds me I am fighting everyday to succeed. My surgery was 11/26 and I don't have it all together...yet, but today I can try to do more. More fluids, more Vitamins, more protien, more energy, more exercise....I can't do it all today maybe, but I can try to improve something I struggle with each day. Then maybe it will get easier overall. I got on ObesityHelp.com too. They have a food journal app I am using to keep track of food and fluids and protien right now. It also has a fitness/exercise journal and they let you set goals with other people and announce when you have achieved them. Have you written down your short term and long term goals? I don't mean "I want to be skinny." I mean like I want to be a size X by X # of months. I want to walk everyday for a week. I want to be less than 200 lbs. Long term and short term goals can give you a better feeling of success to keep you on the right path. I hope this helps. Feel free to add me as a friend.

Honey don't worry at all. See http://atlantasportsnutrition.com/2012/05/30/putting-a-fork-in-forks-over-knives/ for a sports nutritionist's analyses of the research presented in that film.
It's completely biased and non-scientific. Think about all the documentaries that used "facts" to argue that 9/11 was an inside job. Think of all the "facts" people have that prove the world is going to end this month. The agenda pushed in this film is born of the same class of "facts."
While I'm sure your teacher has the best of intentions and believes what she's teaching you, I would bet my life she never went to medical school and probably isn't even a nutritionist or dietician. Is a plant based, natural diet better for you than beef nachos layered in cheddar and sour cream? OF COURSE! But the film blames animal Protein and nothing else... Ugh. I was a researcher for quite some time and to see data presented like this gives me a Migraine.
Most of all, I'm so sorry this woman made you feel bad about your choice. Her reaction is truly ignorant, and I rarely use that word.
You are doing great and making the most of your life and your health. Don't let anybody with bad info get in the way of that.

I have to second the Yasso Greek Yogurt Pops. I'm still pre-op, so I don't know if I would dump, but Don didn't, so that says something. Anyway, I could technically eat anything I wanted but I get those instead of ice cream because they're healthier and they, or at least the strawberry ones, taste JUST like strawberry ice cream. Just don't forget to let them sit at room temperature for a couple mins before you eat them. SO GOOD!

That is a really good quote by ol' Teddy. I'm sorry you feel this way. I think people tend to be vocal about their successes and not so much the less glamorous periods where they plateau or lose slowly. My doctor told me fast, drastic losses are the exception rather than the rule. Big losses are proven to happen though, and it will for you too, just more slowly. It's so easy (and this happens to me too) to get wrapped up in fear and comparisons and we forget to trust this scientifically proven process. Stick to the diet, keep exercising like you are doing, and most of all Celebrate every time you see you are losing weight and love - LOVE - love yourself for the courage you have to make this change and fight for your life every day. You are doing great, and we are all with you in the struggle. Slow and steady can win the race, too : )

I'm sorry about the emotional turmoil you are experiencing. I'm not a mom but I have personal experience with these kinds of issues. And honestly, the only way forward is counseling (for depression, PTSD), medication if necessary, and support groups for WLS patients. I spent so much of the time - the years - that I was severely depressed thinking something external would save me. A boyfriend, getting in to a certain college, etc. Even when my circumstances changed, and I had all those things, I still couldn't escape myself. You have to decide to fight for yourself, and this surgery is a good step toward that, but definitely, definitely, definitely take an hour each week (you CAN make time) to go to counseling or a support group, hopefully two or three hours for both! You deserve and need that kind of support. Good luck on your journey and we're all with you
