  1. More than a sip or two gives me a belly ache
  2. I never have been able to take the taste of whey protein, so I have used milk based protein drinks since the beginning (I'm 8 months out) and my protein numbers are great, even tho I heard from people that whey is the most bioavailable protein. My lesson gere is to try things and see how your body reacts, using others' ideas as hypotheses rather than rules.
  3. In addition to all that has bed posted here, I'll add--my surgeon tells me that I will eat less if I'm eating protein because I will get full faster. That doesn't make sense to me because it seems that volume (of a food) is generally the same despite what kind of food it is. However, my experience tells me he is right. So, eat protein when you are hungry, not anything else. That has helped me (I'm at 7 months and have experienced increased hunger and capacity as you are).
  4. I did surgery in 10/13 and have lost abt 60 lbs. On 4 type 2 meds before surgery. Post surg, I dropped the short term insulin and Invocana, reduced metformin and lantus, also. However at month 3.5, a1c went up. I had to raise metformin and lantus a bit, added Invocana back. My sugars are great looking now, but just had 6 mo. Labs done and anxious to see a1c. Very sad that I am not one of the "miracles." I was type 2 for almost 20 yrs, so my surgeon warned me. He actually recommended the D. switch instead bc it works better for diabetes, but I chickened out on that. Grateful for the improvement I've gotten, though. Have to keep focused on that and know that some things are out of my control.
  5. I was sleeved on Oct 22, 2013 at 238 lbs and 37 BMI. I have been type 2 diabetic for at least 16 yrs and was on short and long lasting insulin (100 lantus and Novalog depending on what I ate) as well as metformin, Invocana, and meds for hypertension and hyperlipemia. My sugars went down very well, and I was only on 1 met. Pill and 10 units of lantus at month 2. However, during month 3 my sugars have gone up anywhere from 50 to 100 points, even while I'm eating only about 60 carbs a day. Ive had to raise the metformin to 3 pills and lantus to 30 units, and i expect my endocrinologist will raise it more tomorrow. I am unable to understand this. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm very discouraged since the diabetes is the only reason I had the VSG.
  6. Thanks for the encouragement. My endo said he couldn't say why this has happened. I just knew that would be the case! Interestingly enough, though, this morning my sugar was 93, which is very normal and the lowest I've seen it since surgery. I ate one piece of 0 carb cheese, and 30 mins later the number was up to 128, which makes no sense. The doc pit me back on a med from the past, so we'll see what that does.
  7. Thanks so much to lipstick girl and NancyG and others talking abt long stalls around month 4! I have been about to decide I've gotten everything I'm going to get at month 4. My stall started during month two, although I lost a few lbs durning the past month or so. I'm amazed that I can eat less than 1000 calories a day and abt 50 carbs and still not lose. It seems mathematically impossible. Hearing from you ladies helps to fight the discouragement.
  8. I'm with you! I've lost right at 50 lbs since gastric sleeve on 10/22. I've had over a month go by without losing, too, but I expect that if I keep doing the right thing, I will get all the benefit possible, and I will focus on WHAT I'VE GAINED rather than what I haven't gotten out of this. For me, that's being able to go off all meds for type 2 diabetes; my blood sugars have even gone up 30 or 40 in the past month , which would be devastating if that is what I choose to focus on. It's just not helpful to focus on what is missing.
  9. Is it worth it to get jackets tailored? My guess is that it's more expensive than buying used or new clothes.
  10. Doña boss, 30 gr of protein is great if that's what you can do at this point. The DSers all say that's a reasonable goal for the first month. You can raise it in the second month. Hang in there. You are going through one of the toughest times for most of us.
  11. I couldnt manage any whey protein, so I tried milk protein-tasted MUCH better, so I could keep it down. I drink Rockin Refuel and it tastes like choc. Milk. You have to get the one with 30 g of protein in 12 oz. it has only 9 net carbs and 190 calories. Their varieties with less protein have a lot more carbs. It was a life saver.

    Lettuce

I'm right at 3 mos. and tried my first salad last night with butter lettuce and no skin on tomato or cuc. Added cottage cheese and chicken for protein. It gave me a moderate belly ache and even today my stomach is touchy.
  13. I have been known to deliberately schedule something for the middle of the night when I know I'll get up to go to the bathroom.
  14. I was most nauseaus after drinking, but it happened randomly multiple times in a day. Nurse said this just happens to some. This was maybe week 3-7. One weekend, it just went away. So hang in there. You just have to get through it and it will be better.
  15. I have the same issue. I'm not much of a cook, but now I read recipees all the time. I'm looking for ways to prep chicken, for example, to be moist and no carb, but I get into it and lose track of time!

    :(

I agree on the head hunger, although I call it mouth hunger. Mine has lessened since the first couple of weeks post surg (oct 2013). I guess it will probably never go completely away.being mindful is key.
  17. I had surgery at a BMI of 36 and had the same issues-T2D, hi bp, apnea, plus others. I don't really care what others think. I will live longer, avoid dialysis and amputations, etc. when explaining it to others, I stress the hormonal aspects of the surgery for diabetes.

    STALL!

I'm 9 weeks out, too, and in stall for about 3 weeks or so. Someone suggested I wasn't eating enough and drinking enough, so I'm trying to up this. I've heard people say to up the carbs for a day or two to shock your system. Others say stay the course, keep calm and carry on.
  19. Hey, gmanbat, how did your diabetes resolve-all at the first or over time? I'm 2 mos out and still not in remission; sad and trying not to be discouraged.
  20. I saw someone post about an app for eating slowly. Look for it-it might help you.
  21. You said "up" implying that we will gain sometimes. I seem to have gained back 4 of the 40 lost since 10-23-13, and it doesn't make sense calorie- wise. Is that somewhat typical?
  22. Be patient. The skin takes more time to tighten than it does to lose the weight. Just wait.
  23. I had regular random nausea for about a month ( started around week 3). Water was the worst--no one told me that water was particularly hard! I discovered I could drink warm things (hot choc SF, apple cider SF) easier. Generally, the doc said it just happens like that some times, so I just kept saying it would pass, and one day a out week 6, it did! Hope that happens for you soon.
  24. And there's no way I'm eating 5x. Usually 2-3 times a day. Family thinks that's why I'm so tired all the time. Just doing what I can.
  25. Yes about choosing btwn eating or drinking. How weird. I've also had to stay up late to keep drinking-nausea slows me down.
