  1. Love these serious discussions. I grew up in Georgia and my Mother and I were in the kitchen cooking like Paula Deen, chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, turnip greens, homemade biscuits and gravy every meal. I turn to that comfort food for good reason. Also I love fish, the saltwater kind like snapper, grouper and mahi, slathered in Old Bay seasoning and sauteed in a little olive oil (tonight;s dinner). My Southern heritage made me dearly love cooking and eating. I have learned that never again will I cook or eat this way. I look at myself right now as humpty dumpty with fat legs. I avoid people because of the shame I feel allowing myself to be bigger than ever in my life, plus my sweet husband and his morbid obesity. Health problems are the number one factor for both of us right now, with diabetes, his heart blockage, my asthma, and Lord I just want to be able to walk around again without gasping for breath.

  2. Hi all from Florida, I have been on the website every day reading and searching, and for some reason I never seemed to find the Boomer Chat Room. I have made a couple friends and gained information, but now I am glad to be here again LOL. I am 67, my husb is 66, my surgery is scheduled November 18, and he is set December 7. He is not a chatty person, in person or in writing, and I do enough for both of us LOL. Very excited right now. I start the 2 week pre-op diet tomorrow. I have been reading, shopping, and doing the Amazon shopping too. I just read on this site after surgery a great Protein snack is dry roasted edamame but cautioned to chew chew chew! I bought several bay spoons today, my niece who had gastric surgery 10 years ago said that was one thing that helped her not take large bites. For the next two weeks I plan to chat with you all and this is the greatest thing, being able to share information. I have a busy week this week and decided I would do some projects to keep me busy and pass time. Best wishes everyone, Linda

  3. I tink this is a problem sometimes when one spouse is losing weight. He may be a little depressed, therefore sleep! I am 67 years old and have learned a lot. I stuffed my feelings and my words in my first 20 year marriage, so I would recommend face to face here is what I need from you. Try to set a time of day for you, and that is his time to have fun with the 3 year old at the park or doing something special! Don't let this make you resentful. Have you tried to get him to walk with you and the little one, a family outing? Also, you can exercise with your 3 year old if need be. Get the stroller out and take a little jog with the baby! Best wishes!

  4. Thanks for all the posts girls, so many of the posts could have been written by me. I am the proverbial worry wart but for some reason I am gung ho putting my fears aside, happy as I can be, as my husband and I plan our surgery in November. Two weeks ago my husband (we are both diabetic) was unconscious at 4 am with a blood sugar of 28, and taken by Rescue. A horrible experience, again. Life can only get better and I am soooooo excited!! Love this group. I am 67, he is 66. I am ready to start living!!!!

  5. My husband and I started going to forums about 10 years ago for his weight loss options, and 10 years later, after much soul searching, dieting and both of us gaining, health getting worse and worse, we both now qualify for the surgery. I am now on Metformin for diabetes, have asthma that limits my activities, a knee replacement, etc., and I am glad we can do this together. We are 66 and 67. His low blood sugar of 28, me waking to find him unconscious last week and having Rescue take him to the hospital, tells me this surgery will save his life and give us a future. God Bless.

  6. If you look at it like 5-8,000 will buy a used car and you finance it, finance your LIFE!. A friend paid $25,000 cash in Georgia 8 years ago and has added years to his life, avoiding diabetes, HBP, etc. that will compromise your health as you age being overweight. I know a 30ish couple who borrowed money to finance the husband's surgery in Florida, for the sake of their marriage and their children. She does not regret that decision.

  7. Hi everyone. I am 220 highest weight, 5'4". My husband is 6'1 and 300 lbs. We are taking this journey together. I am tired of dragging myself around, feeling so bad. I have HBP, pre-diabetic, and my husband is a type 2 diabetic 30 years. It is getting worse for him and very scary. We are finished with all classes and waiting for surgery date. Very nervous and excited. I was 175 lbs many years ago being 9 months pregnant, and felt like a whale. Now I can't seem to stop my weight climbing now that I just retired, and I want a LIFE! not a chair!
