Hello my family:). Just wanted to update: I'm still n hospital, I feel rather well but these esophageal spasms are still givin me issues. As I said the second swallow test was.basically inconclusive but the surgeon said it looked good enuff for him, however; until I'm 24 hrs spasm free, he still won't let me eat or drink:( so today is day 4, npo. Then he said, we just have to b patient bc it will improve, so I have to stay here until Monday mornin:( my 9 yr old is alredy upset when she has to lv me nd she doesn't evn know about Monday yet. Catheter n heart monitor removed so that's good. I thank God that I'm not evn hungry or head hungry, I'm just rdy to get up n moving forward in a positive way. I've been reading about how u all are and praying every night for yall. Take care and hopefully I'll have bttr news for yall. I have lost 70lbs, my defeated attitude, and starting to lose the thoughts of never being good enough, or the thoughts that I could never be considered attractive much less beautiful.
I have gained a new confidence, a new way to walk (head and eyes up) a new perspective on which food is worth putting in my mouth and what is not and the knowledge that food doesn't always win.
My hubby has lost 89lbs in 2013, so between the two of us we have lightened the load 159lbs this year.
I have 29 more to go, he has at least another 10, but will probably shoot for 20-30 more when he realizes it's possible.
This is the first year in a very long time that a new year seems full of possibility.

Surgery 8/2 of this past year. My husband lost 77 lbs, I lost 57 pounds so between us, we've lightened the load on this earth by 134 lbs.
Which btw, is more than our 13-year old son weighs.
It is also more than a newborn baby giraffe weighs, in case you were wondering

I'm going to try something new and send out a reminder on THURSDAYS to post your results on FRIDAYS. This will be our first time to try it, so we'll see if/how/how well it works out.

Totally agree with having someone who does blood draws all day stick you. However, where I was they would only let them draw blood...not insert an IV. The head RN went to a different floor and "borrowed" a nurse with a reputation of finding difficult veins...and voila he got mine no problem. Thank goodness!

Maybe you could go to the Psych office and pick up a copy. Then hand deliver to the surgeon's office. Get a receipt from them that they got it. The "lost" paperwork is beyond frustrating. I might also mention this difficulty to the surgeon. My doc hates to hear of glitches in the office...takes care of them immediately.

I was attracted to his posts long before I knew what he looked like but we ended up talking on the phone one day--and the conversation lasted 8 hours. The first time we met was at the airport, but we had phoned, texted, skyped before then. Got so lucky!

All these docs are so different. Mine said it is okay to use a straw right away...helps to develop your sipping habit.

Isn't it amazing what people think it's okay to say to each other? You're right, no one told me I was getting too fat. In fact, I sometimes wish someone had sat me down and said, "GG, whatever you think you're doing, it ain't working". But no, they told me I was beautiful no matter what size I was. Liars

I was sleeved on December 6. I have lost 22 pounds so far. My goal is to lose 100 pounds and to NEVER shop in a plus size store for myself ever again.

Ha...I can so relate, although my situation was different since I'm not low BMI. I didn't have to consult with my PCP, so I didn't. Mine is also a pretty new doc for me. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from her office after I had been released from the hospital asking how I was doing and asking me to come in for a post op checkin. I went reluctantly since I felt embarrassed I hadn't talked to her about it. To my surprise, and relief, she was totally supportive and told me one of her good friends had just had a sleeve done...in Mexico! So, yes, this is much more mainstream now. I agree, go with confidence and knowledge. If she isn't good with it, maybe she isn't the PCP for you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Today I am 2 pounds under my challenge goal. Caveat...I was pre op when I set the goal, so I was so just guessing. Challenge goal was 248 (from 260). Today, two weeks out from surgery, down 14 to 246. Hooray sleeve! Interested to see how far below this goal I'll get.

I paid into Medicare my entire life. I am fortunate enough not to be on Medicaid; however, I believe everyone deserves adequate health care. My prior plan didn't cover bariatric surgery...and I am very glad Medicaid and Medicare do. Actually, I now have Aetna Medicare Advantage and it has been great!
OP...you work and pay for your insurance because you can! Would you really opt to be on Medicare and need Medicaid to get by? I think not!

I did read the study. Best practice guidelines, but not based on causation or correlation. So while I agree that one can say Ideally bougie size should be between 32-26, if they truly want us to believe that a larger than 36 size leads to weight re-gain then they should either perform correlations, or ideally a logistic regression that allows us to see what factors contribute to regain, and the role of bougie size in regain. At least in this version of the article, that was not provided.
This article speaks more to gaining consensus than using data to guide best practices. Small but important difference, IMHO.
I often write best practice documents for clients. But those documents list the ideal way to do things on one dimension at a time. if a client truly wants to know what combination of events leads to the best outcome, I have to create statistical models to quantify the role of each element in the outcome.
I am sure many things contribute to weight regain, including the ability of the fundus to grow back. I have read of cases where that has happened, and I think in many cases it was surgical error, not patient non-compliance. I also have no trouble agreeing that people may have different capacities for stomach stretching both before and after the surgery.
And of course, it's totally okay for us to have differing opinions on the bougie size issue as well . I'm just saying, the article doesn't demonstrate causation, and the fact that the difference in capacity is 1 tablespoon or less, some other facts may be at play if indeed bougie sizes contribute to weight re-gain--which latter fact was not demonstrated.
Okay enough geekery on my part!
