Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Oh yeah... 1 week and going strong for no scales!!! I can do this! I'm actually starting to enjoy not having the pressure of weighing myself. Oh course I have transferred my scale obsession to my blood glucose monitor... so now I get a bit of pain with my obsession :wink2:

Jeannie, don't worry about speed... you're doing great. I usually walk at 3.5 and run at 4.5. Speed will come with training. Right now all we want to do is SURVIVE!!!! Well I did day 3 of Week 4!!! And I almost did it without stopping... almost. I was 2 min into my last interval when my son came downstairs to tell me he was going to bed. I usually tuck him in and cuddle with him for a few minutes... so he wanted me to hurry up. Problem was, I had my ipod on, and my back is to the door, so I didn't hear him coming. He sort of popped up right beside me and I just about fell off the treadmill (lol). My heart missed a few beats and it was all I could do to hit pause. Then my DH showed up laughing, so I had a few choice comments (non-verbal so DS didn't hear) for him!! So I ended up taking a 30 sec. pause half way into the last interval... but completed it. However, to be truthful, I wasn't going to make it the full 5 min, so would have had to stop anyways! Depending on how I feel on Wed. I will either repeat the day or push myself to move onto week 5. I think I can do day 1 of week 5, just not day 2 yet. Question: What is everyone eating post-workout? Also, is anyone feel like they have a slight stitch in their waist (usually these are in someone's side, but mine is in my waist just right of centre front)?

Georgia, thanks for the swimming link... sounds great. I love to swim, and this could be a great idea to get me moving in the water again. I just have to find a proper routine for going to the aquatic centre. Renewed... I can't imagine you ever over-doing it! HAHAHAHA! Seriously, you are one committed person... great to have as a friend! Ok, I'm going to look into the swimming schedule to see if I can fit it into my week and go 2-3x (if its not too expensive). DH is on vacation this week, so today we took a really long walk with the dog and then went on a beer tour. I know... not great for the diet, but when you only sample a little at a time, that's ok. We tried a fruit beer, a chocolate stout, a honey brown and something else I can't remember. Really liked the something else (lol). We also went out for lunch to my favourite Thai restaurant. I had this excellent mango fish dish (it's relatively healthy). Now I'm preparing for my interview on Wed. Tomorrow we are golfing!!! I plan to run later this evening. Kind of scared... hope it goes better than the other day.

Renewed... don't worry about your running. You will build up to the 25 min and further when your body is ready. At your speed it would only take you about 30 min to run the 5 k, so you're almost there! Leslie... how's the shoes? I didn't run yet. We decided to take a bit of a road trip today instead of staying in the house in the rain. So we're back now and making dinner. I might choose to run later.

I want to run today!!! I know it's my rest day, but I want to run to try and improve. so maybe I'll stop taking my own advice and go ahead and run?

Leslie... that's great! You'll love them. The inserts do make a big difference. Did you go down in size?

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Well I did day 2 of Week 4 today and it was really hard! I didn't do so well today. I probably didn't have enough food in me. Ever since my car accident on Monday, I haven't been able to get much food down. Sometimes my band feels tighter than other times... usually stress does it. So lately, I can only get about 1/2 of what I usually eat down, and often not even that. This morning I didn't have any fruit, yogurt or my Cereal left (grocery day), so all I had was a meal shake before my run. I don't usually have these but its all that was there. So right from the start of the run I knew I was going to have a tough time. I did the first 3 & 5 min interval ok, but then the 2nd 3 min interval I had to slow it way down. Then the final 5 min interval I had slow way down and to do in 3 segments: 2 min/1.5 min/1.5 min, walking for a minute each in between. I don't feel very good about it, but I'll take it! I don't think I'll move onto week 5 until I can do the full run confidently. Next week my DH is on vacation, so we are going to go out one day and run together... his idea, not mine! It will be my first outside run.

Tootie... congrats on finishing week 1... you're on your way now! Don't push it... give yourself the rest days, as it gives your body a chance to build the muscles and bone density. Georgia... I love swimming and wish I had a pool or easier access to one. congrats on keeping the cardio going. Renewed... good for you on waiting until today. That's great on the 25 min. Sugar... hope your son has a good time performing. I love the sound of a mandoline. I played flute in university and had a friend who played mandoline. Mamato... yeah, week 6! Great job. Leslie... my Mom's family is crazy too! Love them dearly, and wow are thy fun, but totaly whacked! Must be where my crazy side comes from. Lyn... cheer up. This was an important time for you to be self centred, but now its time to come home and back to reality. I felt really emotional about 2 weeks post-op, but I blamed mine on my doc's very restrictive diet (clear fluids for 7 days and then full fluids for 14 days!!!).

Lynn... what a great NSV moment! I can't wait until my thighs no longer rub. I imagine its a long way off. Leslie... ain't karma a bit#H. Guess you got to go get those shoes! BTW, I know you were asking about shoes... go to a running store that sells shoes. They will fit you properly. Don't buy just based on brand or what we wear... have them fit you for your gait. Everyone walks and runs differently and different brands or shoes help compensate for different gaits. A good store will ask you to remove your shoes and will watch you walk. They will then get you fitted for the right type of shoe. Expect to pay a bit for them, but they should last you for awhile, and will save you from impact injury.

Renewed, give it a rest!!! Then on your next run day, do the run first and follow up with your DVD, that way you can finish your run and not obsess until you achieve it. If you find yourself obsessing tonight... run it tomorrow! I think you've probably progressed to the point where if you want to run everyday, you could. Ohhh you are driven!!!

Georgia - I think the IT Band is on the outside of your leg. I googled it and here's a link: IT band Friction Syndrome But the ACL ligament runs on the inside of your knee. Here's a link to info on this and the other parts of the knee: What Is The Anterior Cruciate Ligament? What you are describing sound like the ACL. I have a tear in my meniscus which is the stuff under the knee cap, plus I've strained or torn my ACL ligament. Due to the arthritis that I have, the doc won't fix it, so everyday my knees hurt doing certain activities. Thankfully, running has been fine on them, and seems to be helping them a bit! Climbing stairs or going down them hurt. Not bending or walking or running, only when I have to step up or down. I tore mine in a twisting fall, so it could be from your fall, not necessarily from the treadmill. But the treadmill might be causing additional pain. The treadmill has a set speed and sometimes when you slow down you have to force yourself to pick up the pace, which might be putting stress on your ligaments?? Hope this helps.

Whosya... thanks so much for your inspiration and cheerleading us on! Have fun on your trip! Georgia... I forgot to say that you should ask the Ortho Dr when you see her next week where best to run. Oh yeah... stay off the scale! Be strong! Having said that... ohhh I wanted to step on this morning so badly! But I didn't! Checking my blood sugar has now become my positive reinforcement rather than the scale. Kind of a sadistic reinforcer (LOL), but as long as the numbers are good, the little pain prick is ok!

Bonnie - WAY TO GO!!! YOU DID IT!!! That 20 min run must cause some sentimental brain rush or something... first Renewed and now you becoming all sappy and everything after your run! LOL - I love it... it makes me feel good to hear such true feelings! And you took the words right out of my mind! Congratulations, you have done amazingly well. Georgia - I don't know if this helps, but a few years ago my DH was training for a half marathon and injured his IT band (not really sure what that is but it hurt his leg and knee). It took quite awhile for it to go away and when he started back running, he went to a physiotherapist for help. She told him not to run on an inside track because it was banked and recommended he stick to running outside because it varied the texture and grade frequently, so was more natural and less likely to cause injury. He's now all healed up, and runs fairly regularly. He prefers outside, but will run on the treadmill when its too hot or raining.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
I just finished Day 1 of Week 4, and I DID IT!!! - well, sort of (LOL). I did the first 3 intervals (3 min/ 5 min/ 3 min) all ok, although I was sucking wind big time, then the final 5 min interval did me in, but instead of quiting, I did 3 min, walked for 1 min and then did the final 2 min. So I still ran a total of 16 min, and walked 15 min. That's a huge jump from last few weeks where you run no more than 9 min. I always walk a total of at least 30 min, so for the last few weeks its be 9 run and 21 walk. But today I actually ran longer than I walked. I don't think I've done that since I was in grade 7!!!! OMG, I feel so good. I'm on top of the world. I started the day having an awesome interview and now I made a huge leap with running, and then tonight DH and I sort of have a date. Our son is spending his first night away from us on a camping trip, so once our daughter is in bed (8pm) its date time! Hmmm... extra exercise to log on TDP??? LOL. Thank you C25K and everyone here for hooking me on running!!!

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Wow... I'm offline for 1.5 days and there were 4 pages to catch up on!!! What an amazing support group for us all. First off... I'm doing ok since the accident. Still fairly sore, but the docs said that would happen, but ok. Second... I nailed my job interview today!!! I the last week preparing and it paid off. Hopefully it means I get an offer, but won't know that for at least a week. Then next week I have another interview at a different company! So hopefully I will be employed soon. BTW, when they asked me what personal goals I had, I mentioned that I was training to run a 5k race!!! It felt good to say that, and then explain to them how I was training. It won some brownie points... lol. I am going to try running today. I haven't since Sun, as I was too stiff after the accident. But I think it will go ok. I'm going to stick with my plan and start week 4. I'll let you know! Renewed... you are so driven!!!! Running 20, then coming back later and running 25 on the same day just so you can move on! Way to go! Mamato... YEAHHHHHH :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: YOU DID IT!!! Georgia ... I'm so glad your run went well, and no real problems with your knee or ankle. Leslie... you are doing amazing. Huffing and puffing is how I do it too! I think I called it sucking air! Sugar... wow, you cut your time in half! That's so amazing. What a great improvement. Bonnie... you are just trucking along so well. Everyone else... way to go! It's funny, I wasn't online yesterday because the hydro company is working on our neighbourhood, and all I could think about is I want to go onto LBT to find out how everyone's doing. Glad to hear everyone's successes. For those of us giving up the scale this month... keep it up girls! I wanted to step on this morning, but talked myself past it. I keep thinking how good I'll feel waiting! Ohh but its hard.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Hi Everyone, and welcome Tootie and Serenity! BTW, Serenity is a wonderful name (my daughter's middle name LOL). I had a great day yesterday. We went to the beach with our friends and Jesse was actually swimming! It has been a long haul trying to teach him to swim, but he did it. Our friends have a daughter who's the same age as him, and the two adore each other... so he just copied everything she was doing, including swimming. Sarah, my little fearless wonder, is also learning to swim all on her own. She just jumps in and wiggles around. If she could always find her footing in the water, we'd be fine! We then stayed late at our friends and drove home around 10pm, but the trip turned horrible just as we got close to home. We were driving down the street and another car crossed the intersection in front of us. I slammed right into them, totalling their car and damaging ours quite a bit. Good news is no one was really hurt, and it was their fault so their insurance will cover all damages. Bad news is I am sooo stiff and sore. Once the cops cleared us to leave, my DH took dropped me off at the hospital to get checked out, then he had to take the kids home. The docs said I was ok... but they had to put me in a neck brace and strap me to a spinal board until they could confirm. So here I was for 3 hours, strapped to this board, not being able to move, having to pee!!! and my next door neighbour in the emerg was a drugged up crazy guy muttering and moaning the whole time!!! Not my most fun experience. Finally, they said it was all muscle pain and I was good to go home. I didn't get home until 4am, but then had to get up early with the kids... grrrr. Now we are off to the collission reporting centre and the repair shop. So much for my day of rest and prep work for my interview!!! Good news is the doc said I could run, but to listen to my body and stop if it was too much. So later tonight I'm giving week 4 a try. Everyone, good luck today. I'll catch up with your posts later!

Ok, I weighed myself first thing and my ticker is updated. It was hard to up the ticker , but at least its honest! Now, not until Labour Day Monday! We can do it. If we can run, we can avoid a silly scale . Mamato... positive thoughts coming your way!!!! Georgia, keep following RICE for about 2-4 days. Continue to follow your daily activities except for vigorous ones (like running). If you notice any pain in your knee just doing your normal activity, go see a doctor and get referred to a sports medicine clinic if possible. They usually have bone docs and phsyiotherapists. I don't know if your insurance covers this, but if it does... go, it really helps. If you don't notice any problems by Tues, give the running a try. Maybe try outside, rather than the treadmill. Outside you can control your speed, but the treadmill kind of forces your speed. Good luck buddy... I'm sending you positive thoughts too! BTW, I totally expected my knees to give up really early in the running, but they have remained good. They still hurt their normal hurts during the day (i.e. climbing stairs), but nothing new or different from normal. I'm really excited about giving week 4 a try! Scared, but also excited. I know I won't be able to do the 2nd 5 min interval... but maybe the first??

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
I too am addicted to the scales. I weigh myself every morning, except when I forget and have my coffee first. Then I get mad at myself because it is not an appropriate measure. Renewed, I'll join you in that challenge. I'll weigh myself in the morning and then not again until Sept 5th (just before Labour Day). Georgia, I've injured my knees in the past. Last summer DH and I were out golfing and I tripped in a hole and wrenched my knee. Then later in that week I tripped over the dog in the middle of the night and further compromised them. I was in a lot of pain for a long time. In fact, when I had my lapband surgury I was using a cain still to get around. The phsyiotherapist had me follow the RICE program too, but she also had me do some stabalization exercises to improve the muscles. Good luck. I did my Week 3, Day 3 run today and had success! I didn't have to slow down at all and was able to run all intervals. So, I'm going to move on to week 4 on Tue. I probably won't be able to do the 5 min. intervals, but will give it a try.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Mamato - you are a success!!! You ran for 12 minutes straight! That's 4 min. longer than the earlier runs in week 5, so that's a huge advance. It's also 12 min longer than you did 5 weeks ago!!! You probably shouldn't run tomorrow... give yourself the rest day to recoup, then go back over the week, working up to a longer run again. I didn't run today. We didn't get home until 10:30, and there is no way I'm going to run this late at night. Plus, I'm exhausted. So, I'll run tomorrow instead. Lesson learned... run earlier so it doesn't get missed.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Leslie... glad to hear your DH went to the gym.. that's a great first step. Enjoy that exercise tonight!!! I had so many errands to run this morning that I didn't get my run in. Now its almost 6pm and we're off to a festival. So I'm going to have to do my run this evening (late) after eating BBQ food at the Rib Fest. Not the best plan, but I'm not going to skip today! Bonnie... of course you're welcome regardless of your choice. I hope you get approved. Yes it is a tool, but I can honestly say it has saved my life. I've been banded for a year now, have lost 70lbs and am still losing. I don't remember the last time I actually stuck with a diet for more than a year. Usually the weight would start to come back on (and quickly). Also, during that year I've suffered many personal struggles and my band saved me from stress eating myself out of the diet. Just my perspective! But then again, I didn't have a choice. In Canada we have to pay, no insurance covers the lapband, just the gastric bypass.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Oh I forgot to mention... I was saying to my DH last night that when I have lost most of my weight, I would probably have a lot of loose excess skin in my lower belly area. He said to me, "will you need a tummy tuck?" in such a matter of fact sort of way that it shocked me. In a million years I would never have thought he would even entertain such a thing. He is such a worrier, that I would have thought that would send him over the edge. My response was that I wasn't sure if I would or if I would just live with it. He then went on to ask how much it would cost and if our insurance would cover it. So... with that conversation started, I guess if I want to have that in the future... he's on board! Honestly, I never would have considered it because of his worrying. Now, its a possible option. I don't really have much excess there yet, but I can tell that it won't all shrink back, and I'll have some flabby stuff. So, time and weight will tell.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Georgia... way to go! Funny, you feared running on the treadmill and I fear running outside! Probably the same root reason though. My treadmill is in my home, so it's private. I fear running outside where everyone will see me. I also think it will be harder outside. But, I'm going to give it a try once I'm comfortably in week 5, and running at least 5 min. Don't worry about your speed. I walk at 3.5 mph and run at 4.5 mph. I tried once to run faster, but couldn't. Speed will come when we're ready! My DH told me the other day that my 4.5 speed was harder and more impressive than his 6.5 mph, because he would never be able to run even 4.5 carrying 50lb weights (he weighs 50lbs less than me)... so I should be proud I could. As weird as that sounds... he's right and I felt so much better.

Couch to 5k.....come join me!!
Bonnie... ohhh I feel your frustration! Is this guy all there - if you know what I mean? If so, try frustrating him as much as he frustrates you - I love the singing idea , but sing badly! If he's not all there, then just accept that this might be his attempt at socialization, and understand that it might be very challenging for him to do this. Ask the staff if they know what the situation is with this guy, and if it continues to bug you... do what Leslie suggests... move.
