swimbikerun got a reaction from FluffyChix in 6 Month Structured Diet Program Requirement
What does the one paying for it say? Usually this sounds like an insurance requirement. I'd ask them. If it is your bariatric group/surgeon, ask them.
Get it in writing and keep it.
From what I used to know, in most cases online doesn't count. Has to be in person.

swimbikerun got a reaction from summerset in Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis
What I find very interesting is you ask people why they have 60 grams of Protein for sleeve patients, and why it is the same in the first couple months after surgery as for the rest of their lives and the same for sleeve as bypass patients.
They get mad at you.
Logically, (unless you in my subgroup) a sleeve patient shouldn't have a problem with protein unless it is right after surgery. Major surgery I can see needing extra. After 6 weeks, what is the point?
I would also question (and make people mad) because the rates of colon cancer are higher now. If you still eat animal protein, a lot of it, that's one of the main causes. Getting protein from Beans or a drink, is never considered good. Well all the protein doesn't give you Fiber, which your body also needs, and beans serve as a source of fiber.
Dr. Davis is well on point. People's minds and attitudes don't want to and refuse to believe it.

I have 8 lbs more to go to meet my required weight loss.
I am NO expert. I try to steer away from red meat, and I don't eat ordinary cheese (cheddar cheese etc).
I've been sticking with tuna, grilled chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, yogurt, egg whites, and lots of vetgetables.
From what I understand, you should stay away from potatoes and breads and fats.
Have you met with a dietician yet? I meet mine in about 10 days.

swimbikerun got a reaction from wwboy in Things a Vegetarian should know before getting the sleeve?
Its not just recommending it but I've seen all of them in this area be like NO. I'm like, how is it that people who eat vegan/vegetarian survive without meat? So how can you without any shred of evidence for (and lots of it against) claim that you have to eat meat? I can manage chicken at times and right now turkey. I'm still alive. Apparently some with healthcare degrees need to read.
Dr. Garth Davis is the bomb. I have problems with meat, told to knock it off, so I did and found other ways to get Protein in. That includes other things making it hard on top of that. So the problem is in someones' head and it doggone sure isn't mine. I've seen more veg people and they're all doing fine.

I don't have them. I was dumb enough to trust them and started reading and researching. They are a Center of Excellence also. There were some mistakes made, which is something I try to tell everyone about. Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't make it right.
When the thing is to get people to commit to surgery, a big $$$$ item, and no one really has common sense, studied a good number (and the outliers like me) of those with the surgery over 2, 5 years out, its the profit from the surgeries that drives things.
Bariatric surgery practices run 40-45% profit. I found that out when I checked. The conflicts of interest are there to get you in. To do after care, not really. Seen people dumped right after surgery.

On this forum, no one can accuse you of trying to convert someone. You're preaching to the choir! ha ha ha ha. That being said I think its a very good thing to tout a MD bariatric surgeon who promotes healthy food choices.

Ok try this.
1) Ask the surgeon if they have submitted to this insurance before, and ask them to call and see if it fits their needs and the insurances' needs.
2) Ask to move further up in the chain and you need a specific yes/no answer as to whether or not it would be approved if submitted. Be nice, but be firm and keep asking.
Dang. I will say BCBS gave us a list of what would and wouldn't fulfill the requirements.

swimbikerun got a reaction from DietDuchess in Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve
I'm sorry. Actually 35 BMI is the cutoff limit, so you met standard limits, I can't see why people are upset unless they think you have to be 300 to have the surgery. The fact is, the smaller you are at surgery the better and easier surgery will be on you. I lost between 30-40 pounds before I had surgery, with a year long diet and exercise program. It didn't help with my medical conditions, so I was still above 40 when I had it.

Had some meat in the beginning, but red meat just never worked, nor anything fried, etc. with so many problems. I ended up basically handling chicken and turkey that wasn't fried, tough, etc. and with Hindu coworkers, etc. it was like oh well. Their food is really good and tasty and all sorts of new spices, etc. so I'm good with it. I have eaten goat some and its ok.

Newme17 - wish there were way more of you that did this.
I've learned to do my homework and not rely on others opinions and websites anymore. So, I listen with open ears but have to make educated decisions these days.

You're so welcome hon. I hope all and believe that all will be well with you and your kidney. I'm sorry to hear of the health, but I'm equally excited to hear how much healing occurs following a plant based diet.

Many blessings to you hon! Keep us posted on your journey.

Thus Proteinaholics! He talks about Cognitive Dissonance.
"This occurs when someone has such a strong prior belief that the person filters out or reinterprets all evidence contradicting the belief........Research suggests that presenting people with proof that their beliefs are incorrect doesn't change their minds. Instead, it actually reinforces their erroneous beliefs, as they work hard to defend them against fact and logic."
People will need to have an open mind to start accepting that their beliefs are wrong and embrace the truths. I had to. Dr Davis had to too.
