Half Marathon
If that is the case, I would suggest a couple of things (outside of checking with your doctor(s) before doing this, and I mean all of them): 1) double the Vitamins and minerals 2) be prepared to get down more caloried liquids or be wary and watch for signs of dehydration As for calories, that depends on your mileage. I went thru several calculators online, and you want to get a sort of happy medium. For running you expend 80-110 calories per mile. That is on top of what you need just to do your regular duties.

Glad to hear you are also a success story in more ways than one Arlene. Sharing messages of hope, there's nothing like it.

Half Marathon
I did a full marathon at 100 lbs overweight. You can do this! I'd check on the requirements and get what you can and need in powders/liquids. I know that most bariathletes do tend to drop the no drinking while eating issue. What they eat and how they eat it to support what they do is very different. Agnostic healthy eating is what I used, but again, its all different for different folks.

Pregnancy after bariatric surgery
If any one reads information on pregnancy after bariatric surgery, this is a summary article that talks about issues such as Vitamin deficiencies, who should be included on the team caring for bariatric patients. They do give major issues for care in one of the tables as a summary. Its a short read. ISRN Obesity Volume 2013, Article ID 492060, 6 pages http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/492060 Review Article Nutrition and Pregnancy after Bariatric Surgery Lukasz Kaska,1 Jarek Kobiela,1 Anna Abacjew-Chmylko,2 Lukasz Chmylko,2 Magdalena Wojanowska-Pindel,1 Paulina Kobiela,3 Anna Walerzak,1 Wojciech Makarewicz,1 Monika Proczko-Markuszewska,1 and Tomasz Stefaniak1

Need to get back on my path
Natalie_christin You didn't come off bad at all. There is nothing wrong with saying here are my qualifications. It is helpful to know who is educated in what. People can make better decisions about who they might want to ask what question.

Well...got my answer...
Hi, I'm sorry it was sort of made for you. I had gastroparesis before the surgery, got the sleeve, and now have reflux. I can't get another surgery because my surgeon dropped my care, and even another doctor who was going to work with me & the nutritionist, he vetoed that. So I agree with the above answer, make sure you got a surgeon that can deal with complications and recognize them. I had a patient first pcp that figured out possible neuro involvement and told me to see the surgeon, because of research about nutritional deficiencies, neuro problems, and bariatric surgery. I had them in droves thanks to GP, IBS, reflux, and food intolerances. 2 months later at the scheduled appt. I went to them. I got told they knew of no problems like that a year out from surgery. It took 6 months from then before I got to a neurologist. Sure enough, the neuropathies and the like I have all fit the medical research. I was a nationally ranked swimmer, 1 year later I walk with a cane, got braces for both legs and just got a handicapped sticker for the car. I'm sorry but I preach research the surgeon. Make sure they will take care of you even after the magical one year passes, not just its all in your head.

ProteinSnacking, completely redefined.

Unprepared for this complication
Agreed. This is sad to know but at least you have your doctor behind you. If you get a problem, you can be easily dumped if you complain about it where I went. The records, seeing "eats a lot of headaches", etc. is scary. Make sure they dont put problems in the records and make it out like its your fault.

Acid reflux
I had sleeve surgery and reflux and I have been friends ever since.

Is this a good protein powder?
You can do this! I'm not trying to belittle wht you are doing or asking for help. I apologize if that sounds like it is. Milk is good but what kind? Fat free? That's good but what about changing it for Peanut Butter or a piece of chicken? Sausage or bacon? That's a lot of fat but you can use turkey bacon. How about eggs? 2 eggs is 14 grams of Protein. With some milk, there is lots of protein and good Vit D and Calcium. I'm a big salad eater with chicken and eggs. Peas, Beans, etc. What about a turkey wrap? The fish is great but try different types of fish. Are you maybe bored with the diet? How about tuna? You like that?

Has anyone become single as a result of their weight loss surgery?
I am single, lost weight, and gained a bunch of wolves sometimes now trying to leech on me. If I wasn't good for them fat, I aint good for them skinny.

First thing: you gotta track this stuff. What kind of veggies do you eat? Its not that Protein isn't important, but cereal and milk aren't going to give you what you need as much as a piece of ham and broccoli is. Cucumbers, tomatoes, even an apple. A small apple. The granola bar has a lot of calories. So would the K bar. Lots of Protein Bars have tons of sugar in them. There are other fishes besides tilapia. Salmon, flounder, white fish, and you don't mention chicken or turkey or any red meat. Just wondering.

Is this a good protein powder?
We actually didn't research anything. We were hoping you would tell us what is on the back of bag there. Its hard to tell without seeing the nutrition breakdown. You can go anywhere to find Protein stuff. Visit several Vitamin stores, Walmart, BJ's or whatever. Read those labels. What are you getting in, in terms of protein, veggies, fats, etc.? I'm a big believer in eat the food and then figure out what you need to supplement from there. How much protein do you need extra? If you only need an extra 10-15 grams, what about a couple of eggs? Cheaper and you can do more things with them than a Protein shake. Beans are good too and that's Fiber.

I feel like a failure
Ok well you have the first hurdle down and that is information. Since no one can ever tell what doctors leave with their patients, I always find it good to ask. What do you feel is stopping you? Is it the honeymoon is gone? Life is busy? Do you feel that you are tired of being restricted in terms of diet? Do you need a change in exercise? In the doldrums? I ask a lot of questions because I'm not here to blame. I'm here to help explore what possibilities the issue might be and to encourage you from there. I got enough bad vibes from my surgeon. I won't do that to another.

Is this a good protein powder?
One, why did you choose this one? Are there any special dietary needs you have other than weight? Two, what is the calorie, Protein, fat, carb, etc. content of this? I couldn't find it. Second that it has whey protein isolates is one thing but why cane sugar, and what are the spices for? Xantham Gum should be a binder, as stevia is a sugar as in cane sugar. I've seen protein items I think had better quality Proteins and the like in them.

I feel like a failure
Do you have your doctors schedule for how to eat? What to eat first? Do you exercise? I would start there. There is also a 5:2 pouch test that you can try online. Some have gotten good out of that.

Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
I can certainly vouch for a problem with surgeons in the US. When: you ask them to fix their problem, you are not suing them or anything, and other doctors have (AGAIN!) told them that the surgeon was wrong and I did need care educate themselves on complications after surgery ask for a collaborative relationship ask that treatments be made with respect to my values and wallet things like that, and they don't give it, what are you to think? Especially after they spend time trying to "hush up" and tell you they'll respond in writing and never do. That's all the way up to the board and asking do you think this is ethical and they won't answer.

Actually how many lawsuits are there? I don't see or hear of it. I'm looking for the articles that came out recently saying it was getting harder and harder to sue and more people are getting medical bankruptcy. Just because another surgeon comes in behind another one doesn't mean someone is going to sue or have big problems. I don't see a huge increase in people complaining on here about complications. Its more aftercare or the lack/access thereof. I think the issue is a combo of all 4 issues named already but I would bet that lawsuits are what they use to excuse it.

Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
Not in this area at all. I dont know how much of it is the legal agreements between Sentara and Bon Secours or not though. I think the issue on necks may be different than WLS. Different surgeon mentality. It also depends on the $$$ that those surgeons are getting.

I dont think you are talking about elective surgery? You had a surgeon who retired, this is where someone chooses to go to Mexico and pay for their services but they wouldn't pay for the surgeon they are asking to take over care. I don't think its close to the same analogy but again it does give a point to the arrogance and predjudice point quite well. Exactly! I had two vertebrae fused in my neck by surgeon A in Utah. He also did my 3 month followup and X-rays. Then surgeon A retired and I moved to another state so I had surgeon B do my 6 month followup and X-rays. Well surgeon B charged me 3X as much as surgeon A for X-rays (which I filed a complaint against and won because it was discovered that hospital was double billing clients) so I went to surgeon C for my 12 month followup with X-rays and an MRI. I never had any issues finding a doctor to take me as a patient even though they didn't do my surgery. So no, there doesn't seem to be an issue if you take "Mexico" out of the equation, thus my belief the problem is arrogance and prejudice, not necessarily liability and $$$.

Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
I do agree that physicians do have a right to protect themselves, but where does that right end to where patients can't get any local care because not everyone is sue happy? Why is it blanket no no no rather than look at the situation and see? Just because someone didn't do the surgery, if it is to cover some aftercare, its basically saying I didn't get $$$ out of you for the surgery, the main thing, so you are not worth it to me to take on as a patient. I have the problem not just because of the legal non compete agreement, but because with additional issues, no one wants to do anything because they believe the original surgeon should have taken care of it. He just didn't want to be bothered to listen or anything else. I can see why docs have a problem: why should they get dumped on because someone didn't do their job.

Why is having surgery in Mexico such a taboo subject?
All thank you! I do not have followup in the area (the bariatric surgeon did what he threatened to do and that was put a wedge between me and health care providers) but I am in Va. and can't fly. Thank you all for letting others know so if they get the surgery and don't have followup there are options. I wish I had followup in this area but due to non compete agreements between the groups, no one will take others patients. I can't go out of the area due to physical and financial reasons. My big concern is followup because in my case, with problems, its an issue. This is great to hear that not all doctors and hospitals have a $$$ and legal thing first but consider the patient.

You go Becca! For all those who pay their own way to WLS in Mexico, you need to ask your insurance why they won't refund you the dollars you save them by getting surgery! Jerks ... then again, I just had a chat with my insurance because they denied a medication. Between myself and the docs office, we got it approved. Granted for a lower dose but we got it approved.
