With all due respect & apologies for the profanity, I have an image of a woman raising her arms and breaking the finish line tape that says, "Replace what if with He** yeah!" DO IT!!! -

WHOO HOOO Congratulations! -
Look, seriously, it is better to find out and get things taken care of than fart around (with all due respect and pardon my language) and have problems. If you know about stuff, you can know what types of help or the like you need, more appropriate & timely care. That has been my problem, way too many really don't understand the interworkings of everything and the effects it has on the body. Medical school does NOT really teach this sort of stuff and they don't teach problem solving. If you have something of a medical/science background with math/login/CS skills, that is why I can do what I can do & know what I know. I wont say who, but a local in the area who is a nationally big head cheese helped me out long time ago with the medical library. Those ladies at the library have been a Godsend. If I didn't know what to look for and ask and show people stuff, I wouldn't have gotten some of the care I did. After care can be a huge problem, and its better we know and fix it. I've had several people with cancer who paid the price for not getting things addressed.

Thanks. Tuna - yes now I've seen some of those tuna and you need upper body and core for that. Start working out . -
No a Dexa scan isn't, but it does tell you if there are significant bone changes. If you have calcium issues, and I have close to every risk factor known to medicine, then you get it. There are blood calcium tests (serum and ionized) and urine calcium. The blood one is the quick one but does NOT tell the whole story. The ionized one is good or better, but the blood with the urine one is really going to give you the picture of what is going on. Its due to those that I get the Dexa scans yearly and I can guarentee you I will again after the significant drop in hip % and the risk factors I have. The problem is getting it done and getting someone who knows the whole deal to be able to read and interpret it. You need Vit. D levels at the same too, helping that out but also kidney function too. Its not just adrenal glands because the kidneys urinate out excess calcium. You want to be careful - when B12 is high, that can mean leukemias or liver diseases. Its because B12 is released during cytoloysis and/or decreasing clearance by a messed up liver. I had an internist who flipped at me but I was like you want the medical research? Its there. That's why you want to be careful about the education of the person reading bloodwork. As for reflux, yes, that's something they're finding out. Pernicious anemia ... yes but they need to look at all the factors and 99% of doctors, including specialists, wouldn't know how to read bloodwork. I mean read it in terms of the patient and in relation to everything else. Judging the patient and not reading the computer printout that says everything is normal. Patients who present with medical research and I mean serious research ... docs need to look at. Its not a matter of who has the degree, someones' ego, its about the health of the patient. Pernicious anemia is called that because you can die from it.

Yep, I had B1 in the ER, B12 in the docs office. I need K, its so low it never registered months ago. Calcium ... Here is a bit of medical info. This is straight out of the medical research. If your *BLOOD* calcium level goes up (doesn't have to high, just high for you), check the *URINE* calcium levels. Check PTH levels also. Mine were ok but blood calcium went up, urine calcium is below a calcium free diet. When that happens, check the bones and kidneys. Dexa scans last year were ok but this year one hip was lower but the other was significantly lower. Blood is high because the bones are getting leached. The kidneys aren't urinating the extra calcium out because the body is holding on to everything it can. Either that or the kidneys aren't right.

Yep, that sounds about right. Our own Miss Diva and Bariatric Pal staffer Susan both are converting or have converted to RNY because of reflux, so it is def. an issue for some. And since they were both further out when it occurred, it seems it can happen farther down the road, not as an immediate problem.

Hmmm waiting to get healthy, but otherwise anything swimming or running or triathlon, fun bike rides, in Hampton Roads, Va. -
My concern is the studies that have come out saying that 8-10% (if memory serves) people get reflux so bad with the sleeve they need conversion. If it is where you can't live without it, then it makes me wonder if that falls in the realm of retractable reflux that is solved with conversion to RNY.

Has anyone said anything about extra B12, etc. to you?

What is your go to food when you're out and forgot to bring?
swimbikerun replied to teacherlady2133's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Let me suggest this: if you want treats in the house, make them yourself. You see the easy availability of Snacks is a problem. Fill the house with the good veggies and fruit since that is going to help you. food is not a reward, maybe for your animals, but even the "good life" results in a whole lot of animals needing hip fixes and the like for weight issues. -
Um no you don't. I was on a PICC line for 5-6 weeks. It really sucks. That being said, having the problems I did, yeah I can feel for you. Some days are really bad. What can you eat that isn't? You do end up having to force yourself, trust me the alternative isn't any good.

They've found that 10% of people need a sleeve revision to RNY due to reflux. You might be one of those. Yes, I was finally taken off them. I am on my way to osteoporosis. In my 40's I get Dexa's every year because I am going downhill with some "significant" loss. I've had Vit D trouble, my K is so low it doesn't register. Had IV Iron for anemia. My zinc has been low ... just some of the issues. That being said, have you tried Gaviscon and going to smaller more frequent portions? Don't eat or drink anything 3 hours before you go to bed. I say drink because I've refluxed drink a number of times. Beware of anything fatty or something other than lean lean Protein and veggies or fruit (light at that) before you go to bed. Oh my gracious, recently I tried to get some 4 bites of BBQ cooked in Water in, with chicken and some salad. Over 3 hours later, I was still refluxing and unfortunately needed to go to bed. Then again, the other item is to see if you have something other than reflux. Some of mine could be due to delayed gastric emptying. The sleeve was supposed to take care of that but it hasn't. Its still there, some of it. I was given a medication a day or so ago. Its not perfect, but it is helping some. Better than nothing.

I'm impressed. How are people getting in that much? I was lucky to get 800 or so today (ok I'm sick but still) but that is a rough estimate. I thought we would only get in 1000 at the most? That's what I've heard but if I'm wrong I need to know to correct it so I pass on right info.
-
Can you stop now? If you do, you should be ok. If you can't stop ... trust me, going in the doctor is going to figure it out. If your liver hasn't shrunk, they'll know it. I had an instance where they opened the person and they had dinner in the intestines. If the doctor had knicked the intestine, they could have died. Seriously ... think about it. We'll support you all we can here, but there is a reason for the diets before surgery.

Well, what about cutting out 1 of the Protein drinks and eating it and one coffee a day for one week? That's it. Nothing else you change. That way it is a slow removal, doesn't shock you or your system. Make it easier on yourself. I did that with sodas when I saw how people were on the headaches due to going off sodas. It took me 3 weeks to gradually phase them out, and then for my last "meal" I had my favorite Diet Dr. Pepper. Last one forever. No headaches. So try that, just a small change, one thing (or in this case 2 items). Nothing more for one week. Don't change but just trying to get protein in other ways and drinking more Water or Crystal Light or Powerade Zero or flavored water and then solid Proteins.

Ditto all the above. One thing: you realize what is going on. The next step is to slowly take control again. You feel control is being taken from you due to your husband. food is NOT going to help you. As you've seen, its only going to hurt you. Its not the crutch you think it is. Do you have others you can reach out to there? Support groups? Family? Friends? Church/religion?

Girlfriend forget the scales its the CLOTHES you need to be worried over. I was going nuts ... bloody ... I went from 18/20's to 0's in 4 months 1 week and then not long after, 00's. I thought I'd be in size 8's, I'd blow a ton of money because I'd be at my college size (smaller than my high school size) of clothes. Well I blew that and said YAY and then ... um ... size 6 ... size 4 ... and I was adding another reason to just yammer at the doctor going YO I mean Y O D U D E ... so really, after surgery, concentrate first on the clothes and forget the scale until you start leveling off. You know what? A full wardrobe and the like at size 8 and then having another wardrobe at size 0, the cost of a scale isn't something you need. Its also on trying all the Protein shakes, bars, what you can put that Protein powder on ... Vitamins that you can stomach ... and all the new serving bowls, plates, forks, spoons ...
-
Do you really need a scale at this point? Here's the thing, the doctor is going to be weighing you and you'll see things drop in clothes. A scale is truly better in maintenance time, then worrying over getting on the scale every few minutes. I've seen people have issues if they're not dropping 3-5 pounds a week, and your surgeon or the office should be watching that.
