Your response to: "but you aren't 'THAT' big!"
swimbikerun replied to MisforMimi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This has to be hands down one of the best "non believer stoppers" I've seen. I would add to that, that your doctors feel the same way. Ask them to produce medical experts in the field of bariatrics for that. Keep pressing that point. Can't argue with data. -
Abdominal pain 10 months post op
swimbikerun replied to aaainatx's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes I have. I am totally embarrassed and very much behind you, as I also had an experience with my surgeon that has affected my health and care ever since. Know that I will not judge you but help you to the best of my ability. Aftercare is lacking in many ways for bariatric care. We're 'cash cows' it seems. -
gastroparesis and gastric sleeve
swimbikerun replied to Lelly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did and it was a mess. Its really the surgeon and the mindset and experience of them and their office staff that is going to help, more so than whether or not the doctor has done 200 or 600 surgeries. -

Flaxseed, how about asking the docs? The other is find a GI who has experience with bariatrics. I am here to tell you they are few and far between. -
gastroparesis and gastric sleeve
swimbikerun replied to Lelly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes. You can email me if you want. Garbage ... and I have the background to prove it. Sleeve can help you. I'd be more than happy to help you but you also may want to find out if your surgeon is willing to read medical research. I did a LOT more of it than the surgeon I had did. -
Complications....so broken and sadden
swimbikerun replied to boojak2003's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Rant on! I want to learn from others. You are not going to find surgeons divulging these things. Each person has something to add. Besides, having been on TPN and having a wild GI tract, I can well sympathize with your position. -
I feel so frustrated

Depends on the doctor and patient. To address one other item - you are right on dumping syndrome. The choice is dumping syndrome can be helped easier than can getting a cancerous esophagus. Reflux can lead to changes that cause that. Its a choice between the lesser of 2 evils. Much like voting for government. LOL ROFL. -

Convert to bypass. When it gets bad that is what they normally do. -

I do not know if this is true but I wanted to add something: I understand it takes 3 weeks for something to become a habit. Maybe it would be easier to do one change as was suggested, but just 1 for 3 weeks and then go on? What do you think would help YOU better? 1 a week, 1 a day, 1 every 2 weeks, change? I'd rather target to the person so it works for them. -
I like to know what food are you people eating for breafast lunch and dinner how much do you eat to keep your weight off
swimbikerun replied to godkeepsblessing's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
At this point your surgeons' office should be filling you in on what it is they want you to eat. If you search, you will find a lot of suggestions on the forum. I think the previous poster had it right. There's a bit of trouble understanding your sentances. Can you please say when you had surgery and what surgery, what you doing now in terms of eating, drinking, and exercise. Its hard to help if we have no idea where you are in your journey and quite honestly, these surgeons' offices need to be taking responsibility for you if you are 2 months out. -

8-11% get reflux after surgery. Possible yes. There may be other things going on with that. I wonder they don't convert you. what else are they seeing on the tests? -
4 Months post op - Need some exercise help
swimbikerun replied to Firefly2000's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Agree with all this. Want to add, kill the sauce. What about carbs you are eating? Fats? In terms of swimming what do you do? What is your mileage? I would swim at least 2500. When I was doing competitions, etc. that would ramp up to about 3000-3500. Are you doing just free or putting any IM or fly in there? have you put the food into a tracker of some sort to see calories and carbs/fat? -
Need some experienced weight losers
swimbikerun replied to Flaxseed's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Yes and no, they do have somewhat of a point, as there is a fair amount of those who gain the weight back. I believe the range is 20%. She does have a right to be concerned. I think the issue for me is more that we have someone who is asking for help which is the biggest step. She's looking for answers. I want to see she gets support in finding those but the way she is describing it is I think past us and maybe on to other help. First of all getting kudos for being concerned, asking for help, says a lot for someone. I'd rather see them do that now then just give up. -

swimbikerun replied to boojak2003's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ummm ... even a small pin hole can leak things out. You have more patience that I do. I admire that. I would pray for you, that really bites. I know someone who had a leak from one of the two bariatric surgeons in the group I was in and they switched to the other doctor. -

They did a gastric emptying study? EGD/colonoscopy? There is another test I had done with swallowing a capsule, one for intestines that included just x rays 5 days apart (others do them different times apart) and another one where I had a monitor on all day and the capsule went the whole way down. -
Has anyone experienced low BP and HR after WLS?
swimbikerun replied to jtickle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes. I was told to add salt to diet. I've been low one time before. "We have also discussed the fact that my vagus nerve may have been damaged during surgery, it controls heart rate and BP. Has anyone else had this issue or have heard of this? " That might make sense in my case. I had gastroparesis before the surgery and its still here after. There are questions regarding the enteric nervous system and considering the gastrectomy was my 3rd abdominal surgery (gallbladder was 4th), it is possible that happened in my case. http://www.cvphysiology.com/Blood%20Pressure/BP008.htm https://www.inkling.com/read/berne-and-levy-physiology-updated-koeppen-stanton-6th/chapter-18/nervous-control-of-the-heart http://www.merckmanuals.com/home/heart_and_blood_vessel_disorders/symptoms_of_heart_and_blood_vessel_disorders/fainting.html and here are some interesting ones: http://gi.org/guideline/management-of-gastroparesis/ Postsurgical gastroparesis (PSG), often with vagotomy or vagus nerve injury, represents the third most common etiology of gastroparesis. In the past, most cases resulted from vagotomy performed in combination with gastric drainage to correct medically refractory or complicated peptic ulcer disease. Since the advent of laparoscopic techniques for the treatment of GERD, gastroparesis has become a recognized complication of fundoplication (possibly from vagal injury during the surgery) or bariatric surgery that involves gastroplasty or bypass procedures. http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/746363_3 Bariatric surgeries such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, but not laparoscopic banding or vertical banded gastroplasty, increase gastric retention and lead to fundic distention that may increase reports of early satiety, anorexia and weight loss.[46] Lastly, one study reported that 8% of postcholecystectomy patients developed gastroparesis, suggesting that operations that do not disrupt vagal activity also impair gastric motor function.[4] Isolated development of delayed gastric emptying with preservation of normal transit in other gut regions can be a complication of selected disorders. Some studies have reported delayed liquid or solid gastric emptying in patients with GERD. https://web.duke.edu/surgery/2014_Bariatric_masters/session6_yoo.pdf http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/gastroenterology_hepatology/_pdfs/esophagus_stomach/gastroparesis.pdf http://www.columbiasurgery.org/news/healthpoints/2011_winter/p3.html Victoria -

Not that but similar types of problems. What is still ongoing now? Have they ruled out GI issues or motility issues? -

Can you find another psychologist? They are not helpful. Second, what about substitutes? Water or 0 calorie items or veggies. Walking? -

What is good for everyone else is maybe not good for you. The better option is to see what is available where you live and give them a try. The next is for those types of mail order ones and see what you come up with there. Different tastes, different likes, can all make this an interesting thing.

Hi Natalie, Here is my take on what you said: you are going thru a divorce, so try focusing on yourself at this point. You have other worries you mentioned but right now your health and all that is going on, that could probably be best to take that attention there first. {{hugs}}

swimbikerun replied to boojak2003's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Something isn't right and I agree with you. Who is paying for this? -
One other thing - I have a number of problems after the surgery and one it didn't fix. I was hospitalized for malnutrition badly enough I got told I ws going to die. I still tell people get the surgery. Because 98.5% of people have no problem and the biggest issue they have is weight gain. I would rather enjoy the quality of life that I had in swimming, running, etc. and the memories of that then sitting on my can doing nothing. I don't regret the surgery. If I can say that, isn't giving your life and health worth the chance? My stuff is rare and I had GI problems to begin with. If you can get the surgery DO IT! It is worth it.
