3 years out-now with new concerns over old complications
swimbikerun replied to NORCALRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't know what to tell you except I'm hoping things get better. I wouldn't even begin to think about where to start. What about asking the PCP who you are to go to? -
Have you recently gotten surgery at Mexicali Bariatric Center?
swimbikerun replied to paragondream's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Yes, I was accused of being Rachel. I had supported the lady until then. She got mad, apparently believing she was right, and blocked me. It wasn't long after that I saw the comments made by people on FB about her. Rachel indicated she got bumped off lists and it was after that point. I say that because if an employee is that way, you want to check into the doctor and what they'll tolerate. If they tolerate that behavior from their nurses, how are they going to treat you? if you need care or questions after, how will they treat you? This is what I say because I've had that experience. No, not had those docs. I could give you some areas to check too, if you want, privately, that might get you some more help. -
Have you recently gotten surgery at Mexicali Bariatric Center?
swimbikerun replied to paragondream's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Yes, that is who the nurse was associated with. I think she used Mexicali for that reason - association with the Mexican Mexicali place. Apparently these people said she would change her name or nickname and come back on FB since she had gotten either blocked for a certain amount of time or the like. I don't know all the details but I remember it because I was floored. I had never heard people on the bariatric lists just say block her in public to others, some indicating an issue with her. Never that blatant. I can only say what she did to Rachel and myself firsthand. It would have had to have been her (Mexicali's) comments that got Rachel blocked and I know Rachel said she really doesn't post on FB because she doesn't have the time. I can also say that the experience I had and Rachel had and what I gathered from a couple of the FB groups, was not positive. From my own experience, it is better to find out specifics or anything on a problem and see how places deal with it. Any one can deal with success stories but if they've got no reputation or a bad one in how they deal with problems, you want to know. -
Have you recently gotten surgery at Mexicali Bariatric Center?
swimbikerun replied to paragondream's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I believe there is a nurse there, Michelle Mexicali, that has caused some issues on FB. I about died when I saw some people commenting about her, as usually you don't see that sort of thing happen openly. I was accused by her of being a friend of mine who helped me out. I can understand getting people confused but she couldn't consider she might be wrong. That friend has apparently gotten some ill stuff because of it. She would have been the one spreading that, so that someone works as a bariatric nurse and does that is troubling. I had some issues like that with a nurse who I question whether or not she has feelings for the doctor. I didn't care much for the doctor as a fair amount of his decisions and the like didn't seem to be guided much by evidence and research. -
How accurate is your calorie counting?
swimbikerun replied to Sara51692's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I don't use MFP but I'm pretty pleased with the one I chose. I think it does a good job most of the time. -
So why did we need surgery to do this?

Garden Of Life protein powder
swimbikerun replied to jess9395's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Yes I use several of the protein powders. I'm a Vega fan though. You can also get Lifetime that is cheaper than all of them. -
Gifts for Office/Doctor?
swimbikerun replied to jennyhurt3's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
food is useful but cards are nice. Letters to their bosses with details are good. Snoop. I sure did, I asked who is in charge and who would be in a position of power to know what myself (and others) thought of people. I went so far as to a few of them asking who can give these people raises. Believe it or not, in EVERY circumstance they told me and told me what would help at raise time. That's what they got. I rank/rate doctors and the like in the office. You can have good docs/bad staff, bad docs/good staff, good/good, bad/bad. Give specifics on the ratings. If I see some specifics, its going to help people best decide: is this an atmosphere I can deal with? That's what people really need to know. -
Nicked Bowels - Encouragement needed...
swimbikerun replied to cangudz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is always possible in any "key hole" surgery to knick things when inserting trocars. They don't do it on purpose. They just are putting them in somewhat blindly. Please don't feel bad, there was nothing you or her could do. If they're trying to fix the problem, that's what you can ask for. Keep focusing on the outcome 6 months or a year down the road. -

swimbikerun replied to Kindle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The surgery gives you the boost you need. It helps. -
Yes. Happens to me a lot.

Does your surgeon not have a support group? What about the psych exam? Have you contacted one for that? There are many ways already listed: exercise, eating better, sleeping better, do you spend time with family, friends, doing activities that aren't stressful? Prayer, meditation? All those things help.

Accepting The Perfectly Imperfect Me
swimbikerun replied to Pandora Williams's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Yes, this is one of the most honest and critical discussions at a topic that isn't always covered. I really think this is one of the best BariatricPal has put out. Glad it got posted. -
Very glad for you being on the mend. Hope it continues.

Gallbladder removal 5 months post sleeve
swimbikerun replied to sailor girl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes agreed, I was given Actigall but couldn't get it down. Even in applesauce or the like and oh I still remember the doggone fever/flushing I would get trying to get it down, standing at the sink, waiting to bring it up or spit it out (just like the liquid vitamins). By one month out I was already showing problems any way. Mine just couldn't deal with that amount of weight loss. -
I think one of the other problems is the lack of support from the bariatric community in terms of medical help. For some reason, I can't figure out why they are so against vegan/vegetarians without a shred of medical evidence (that is not biased or paid for by meat companies) that shows veg people can't get protein from non meat sources.

Things a Vegetarian should know before getting the sleeve?
swimbikerun replied to nolongerhere's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Its not just recommending it but I've seen all of them in this area be like NO. I'm like, how is it that people who eat vegan/vegetarian survive without meat? So how can you without any shred of evidence for (and lots of it against) claim that you have to eat meat? I can manage chicken at times and right now turkey. I'm still alive. Apparently some with healthcare degrees need to read. Dr. Garth Davis is the bomb. I have problems with meat, told to knock it off, so I did and found other ways to get Protein in. That includes other things making it hard on top of that. So the problem is in someones' head and it doggone sure isn't mine. I've seen more veg people and they're all doing fine. -
Opinion: Tess Holliday. How do you think she will help or hurt perceptions/opinions on size, discrimination, weight, and most of all, WLS? Good or bad or neither?

Feeling a Bit.....well....Unwelcome?
swimbikerun replied to livvsmum's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You make some very good points. I think after 1 year, people need MORE support, not less. The "easy" part of letting the surgery and resetting the system thru less eating, the newness, is now gone. The rest of your life, you have to live out. -
Feeling a Bit.....well....Unwelcome?
swimbikerun replied to livvsmum's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes. I try to stay away from saying my size or my weight for a very good reason. There is no reason to focus on that as it is in what can we do to help each other get better experiences. -
I was told that I had a mild case of hypothyroidism and they would not proceed with surgery if it was not under control. Your doctor may test before hand. If there are complications, the doctor is not going to want to trust you because you weren't honest about something. My question is why do you want to put your health in danger? Get it checked, get on top of it. A doctor is going to be more supportive and understanding of a person who did that than one who didn't. Btw, docs do check out forums.
