Is / was your nutritionist all that helpful?
swimbikerun replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I actually had the bariatric surgeon give an RD recommend to a previous PCP. This person even admitted she knew nothing about it, no one in that group did. Considering what I said about the previous one, this doesn't surprise me. Like I said, the $$$ aren't in that. -
Any Real Research on Post Op Guidelines?
swimbikerun replied to sbacoleman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No, whatever I have put out there, I would think I remembered some things. The problem is that trying to get the surgery covered is more of an issue. That's where all the money is: the procedure itself. They don't seem to care about us afterwards unless its showing less hypertension, diabetes, so pay us for the surgery type of thing. -

Hmmm. Sounds like we need to do some work on rating nuts, psychologists, and support staff with the surgeons? That would be more helpful to know because the surgeon you see less than the support staff. -

I had my first nut asking the people for suggestions. So you can imagine from there. I did my own research and its been a lot better than what I paid for. -
Will I be able to get in enough protein to bodybuild?

Thanks B-52. I have a similar issue possibly. -
Can't get enough calories to exercise...
swimbikerun replied to lorilove's topic in Fitness & Exercise
How much extra weight do you have to lose? 3500 calories = 1 pound. So 8 miles = 800 calories roughly. If you did that 1 time a day, that's 1 pound a week. Runners have more issues needing carbs than Protein. Getting in one extra shake is how many calories? That knocks down the rate above. I'm still not understanding why we aren't using the regular figures and seeing whether this is an issue more so than getting in fluids and then protein/veggies. Fat is going to be burned and that's what you want. -

If you jus tgot your surgery, why is there an issue? If you want to lose weight, just keep doing what you are doing. Get the protein in best you can. -

How about taking a look at the vegan and natural bodybuilders? They are able to do it without animal meat, so you should be able to also. -
Fruit, eggs.

I need an accountability partner/buddy/mentor
swimbikerun replied to lapier's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How far out are you from your surgery? VSG right? When you are under a year, is your surgeon offering anything? Quite honestly I wish you the best of luck to find someone who is going to check on you every day. It sounds like you already know what the problems are. Have you talked to the nutritionist? What about the psychologist? -
Just an FYI on swimming, if you do it right, you'll take the weight off. You might go lower than you expected.

No, I couldn't exercise like that before surgery. I dropped about 25-27% of the excess weight in one month. The reason why I was able to do a 10K 3 weeks and a day after surgery is because I had about 100 pds excess weight at surgery. I was also doing some things like walking, swimming, light weights before surgery. I could not exercise at the rate I did 1 month after that I did before. Big difference. Add to that I didn't have diabetes, mild hypertension only. Thyroid was being treated for several months before surgery. No sleep apnea. So many of the comorbidities others had I didn't have. Big difference there too.

Interesting. Thank you for sharing.

What advice did you get at 1 year or annual checkup?
swimbikerun replied to tiredmama's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I didn't get any real advice from the surgeon. At least you got that. -
Despicable thoughts
swimbikerun replied to WL WARRIOR's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Warning gang: just for the record, most do not leave the pool. You see a few do, but if you are working on techniques, like Ryan Lochte says, everyone does it. I will say this when you are swimming for several hours in sets and especially more than one in a lane, its that way. Btw, my pool is a UV filtered pool. I could barely tolerate the public pools: too many chemicals and too many shallow ends. Flip turning becomes unnerving because you are doing a summersault for all intents and purposes and if you dive in, there's a huge huge difference between 6-7 feet and 12 feet. The Water is WAY too hot. I swam a mile once when I was in competition shape and had to stop for breath. I think I lost more weight in that pool than any other. -
Despicable thoughts
swimbikerun replied to WL WARRIOR's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd say we probably all have the same thoughts. Maybe they are judgements and maybe they are just wondering what runs through others minds. Just like you asked here - how do others think/feel about x/y/z? and for the record, as a swimmer, if you go to the indoor pools and be there with other swimmers, not those who splash around but actually swim, you can be 95% naked and no one notice. Or they'll complain for you to not have ragged trunks or something, have some pride. No one cares. If you show a nice suit, we'll notice the suit. The rest of us know what we all look like, and we're over it. Sometimes an indoor pool (lap pool) is a better way to go. -
Yes. In 3 years, I've had 2 sets of iron infusions. Chronic problem.

Stupid pain that wont go away
swimbikerun replied to Darkplaces's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got told it was all in my head. Turns out it wasn't. I had some problems before the sleeve but a lot more after. -
Where have you looked so far? That way we don't duplicate anything. You can always google for bariatric and vegan or vegetarian. Dr. Garth Davis would be a good one to follow.

Stupid pain that wont go away
swimbikerun replied to Darkplaces's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a huge problem with my doctor not listening about my gallbladder. 2 other surgeons, 1 ER doc, and my PCP at the time, all said gallbladder. The insurance ended up calling my doctor and asking him why he wouldn't do the surgery, what medical reasons he had for it. I got tired of getting smoke blown up my skirt. It got done and not constant pain all the time. My weight loss settled down. The doctor went off on me about it but it was worth it to just say, give me common sense stuff, you just operated on me, know my history, all my stuff is here, what's the problem? Some days, egos and or mindsets can be an issue and I hope that isn't true in your case. I would not wish what I had on any one.
