How Much Do/Did You Know About Nutrition?
swimbikerun replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I knew some but after I learned a lot more because I was forced to. The nutritionist they had was asking on the web for help because she couldn't help. So I had to learn. Now I find some incredible ideas on food from all different surgeons' offices that people post. As long as you can recognize lean Proteins, veggies and then some fruit, an occasional small treat, that's the main thing. I see a lot of "ideas" put into peoples' heads that are really sad. Veggies, especially with Fiber, are good things. Yes they might have calories but the less fiber in your diet the greater the chance of colon cancer. Its already been hinted at in at least one study on us (if memory serves). There is little rational thought done to this area because the $$$$ are in the surgeries. -
Best of luck!

I am so glad for you. I really want to see people doing their homework. I never want to see someone in my situation again.

Really wanting to go Vegetarian (still eat eggs and cheese)
swimbikerun replied to CherokeeGirl's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Catwoman that's what I do. -
Same here. I had one. I used a cover over top of it. You could buy them for $30, at least mine was. It stunk but that was because I didn't want it in the first place. If the surgeon had fixed the problem, I wouldn't have needed it.

Numbness and neurological complications
swimbikerun replied to teecee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes. I requested a muscle biopsy and got overruled. This is on top of situation where the creatinine level dropped in half. -

I've had issues also. It has to do with allowing the bariatric surgeon community to get away with it. 40-45% is the profit margin I've seen for bariatrics. The aftercare, especially past a year, is horrid. Out of places like this, thanks to Alex Brecher, I owe a lot. This is where you get a lot of support. -
I'm looking for feedback on how your surgeon was chosen

Insurance and the office. I requested a different doctor and was told NO you have this one. -
Really wanting to go Vegetarian (still eat eggs and cheese)
swimbikerun replied to CherokeeGirl's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Check out people like Rich Roll. There are others who eat vegetarian. Hindus & Indians do. All don't have a problem with protein. They have a bigger issue with B12 than anything else. -
MoM is good too. Hmm. Iron pills (was mentioned before) can also do it.
-
How much water are you drinking? and extra veggies. Its the fiber that are going to move things along.
-
I had some pain with one of them. Just depends.
-
Have they discussed a PICC line? Or doing something to check the causes?
-
Yes. Both of them did not take up to 1.5 hours. My values were 12% & 11% so getting rid of the gallbladder (they used that to qualify me for surgery) and the pain was a blessing. I'm sorry, it was.

Dub you are not a jerk. I agree with you. Big difference between someone weaving a little and were out celebrating the kids' graduation from high school or college, compared to what he did.
-
What would work best is if we had something around the circumstances. The docs' only child got married or graduated from Harvard & were celebrating. Were they just .01 over the limit or .08? The problem with driving is that, gracious you should have enough sense by now not to drink and drive. That the medical community hides these things makes it worse. Cover ups. The "butt slapping" surgeon. Too many variables.

Unprepared for this complication
swimbikerun replied to tammygRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do steroids? That is one other thing that helps. I have kidney issues. Dehydration works some kidneys to the bone. What types of testing have they done? -
I had no idea it would be this bad

Have you talked to your surgeon? -
That surgery was easier than the sleeve. It was the anesthesia that threw me for loops and left me in the hospital. I had them say they never had someone come out like that. I have anesthesia problems, so if you don't, piece of cake.
-
If it is, for new people, then maybe we need to report it? If you help someone, that is data that is important. If someone is a month out vs. one year out I would give different advice. That's why I'm sort of looking at that one thing as a guide to what I tell someone.

Numbness and neurological complications
swimbikerun replied to teecee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've had problems. They were helped by banana bag/fluid infusions, and jacking up the EMG's power to the point where I felt the after effects in my muscles for hours. Steroids have helped tremendously. Btw, my surgeon said the same thing. He was not correct, as there is literature about neuro problems after surgery. They just don't read the research. -

I've had some problems like that. Vitamin B 12 & 1 deficiencies and water issues. I've got other things but getting fluid/banana bags helped. -
Almost 10 months after sleeve, I had my gallbladder out. Much better - not the pain and the like problems.
-
As they had you sign the document about complications and problems, sometimes things happen after surgery. My suggestion is to talk to your doctor again about your concerns. If it doesn't get better, get a second opinion. There are going to be many bumps in the road - this is a life long journey. Take one day at a time, don't rush things. Btw, your profile has you having surgery in Nov 99.
-
It is also possible because they don't know how to do it, not enough experience, or its not $$$$ as good as the RNY.
