Anyone from Charlottesville Virginia?
swimbikerun replied to wildflowergirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in Hampton Roads but I'll help if I can. -
Speaking as someone who had an issue with a surgeon who would fit the pattern of gaslighting and blacklisting, go for the other surgeon. I would also say, if you are willing, please please let others know of your experience. Not trying to discount others, but things might change depending on your circumstances. Some people did well where I was at (they had no problems, etc.) but one person who did summed it up: they want all the low hanging fruit. In other words, if it is easy and you do well, fine. Otherwise you are on your own and they don't do enough before writing you off. What happened to others, happened to them. What matters most is you getting the experience you need. Things may have changed and I have found out that there are those who have threatened things against people if they talk about their good or bad experiences. Don't be so sure that the people out there are not working for the group themselves. I've had that happen before also.

Three Weeks Post-Op -- Help!
swimbikerun replied to bearsmama3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ask the doctors' office. At 3 weeks out you need to be checking in with them. -
Severe left side pain 17 mnths out any ideas?
swimbikerun replied to bpfrummy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No but if this is not related to the surgery, I would find another surgeon if you can and are able to. Also, I suggest you rate your surgeon everywhere. Without the cons as well as pros, it doesn't help people going forward to get better and the surgeon to lose money on patients they don't get because of their manner. -
Starting out at age 45? How common?
swimbikerun replied to KS123's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was 45, 2 months from turning 46. -
Please do. If you would like prayer, please let me know. You can PM me. I'd even be happy to ask on my church prayer chain for you. They don't need full names or anything. They do keep stuff confidential, and I can attest to that. I'm so sorry this happened but at least it sounds like she has a decent doc. There are many who aren't.

Vitamin powdered supplements? Other advice ?
swimbikerun replied to lealor's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
There is a product on the market you can try. Its called Cal EZ. I don't know whether or not it would fit your criteria, but it is something you can mix in. You can always have your calcium levels measured to check on whether or not the product works for you. -

Wernicke Encephalopathy in Subjects Undergoing Restrictive Weight Loss Surgery
swimbikerun replied to Escape_Pod's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have several more that I sent in to be put in my records, but there are multiple references to nutritional issues and neurological issues. Its there, its just the doctors don't look for it and also think that because the "labs" are "ok", then everything is fine. Not everyone is a computer and some people may have higher levels than others. It is for this reason, that doctors do not use the labs together with symptoms/signs, that we have the incredible amount of delayed and missed diagnoses. -

What Are Your Best Recipe Makeovers?
swimbikerun replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
Hmm. I might eat potato salad once in 6 months or less. I would think fries and the like, even in smaller quantities would be no go's. I also prefer doing "pizza" with just some sauce on a plate and tiny bit of cheese. I don't do it that much though. Same for a tomato, nuke it with some cheese on it. -
What Questions Should I Ask My Surgeon?
swimbikerun replied to chazaplachta's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
All I know is at a number of people with non positive glowing outcomes all seem to have one thing in common at the practice I was at: they were told it was all in their heads and fobbed off, dropped, etc. when not all of them had something that needed surgical correction to fix (among other things). Delayed or missed diagnosis is the #1 cause of lawsuits. You would do good to check all sites for reviews. Forget the USA state medical boards, as they do nothing. Check out the courts, etc. Find local newspapers and see what they say and if they are paid advertisers of the paper or the TV stations. You really want to talk to other patients who didn't sail though. They always tout those, but lots of people can have success. Its when the surgeon and people are in hot Water that you want to find out how they react. They'll love you if it works out, and you'll love them. -
What Questions Should I Ask My Surgeon?
swimbikerun replied to chazaplachta's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
My big one: ask what his major complications have been and talk to the people involved. A doctor who is willing to say what his problems are how they dealt with them, how they deal with problems, is going to tell you a lot more about the character of the doctor and his office. Many can have good outcomes but if they don't know and look at their own progress to become better, they're in it for the money and will toss you when something bad happens. -
Anyone heard of it or tried it?

How Much Do/Did You Know About Nutrition?
swimbikerun replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
Did you get any after support from the doc? -
Try a google search for plus size bathing suit and you'll find everything. That way you can choose the style of what you want to wear. Speedo and many others put out larger suits.

In Virginia also. A little over 1/2 the backyard/sideyard are veggies & herbs. Fertilized by the bunnies, Starbucks, and hens and some Gardentone. Shroom and Moonure are available. I do pick your own farms. I'd kill to be where you are at gpmed.

Feel like Im going at this alone
swimbikerun replied to Notsolilmama49's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are actually many who have the issue. I'm not sure if there is a married forum that might be able to unite you with others. You can also do a search on the forum and see if someone else has had this problem. I'm sorry. -
I eat any sort of veggie I can. It might be soft but I do it.

Tools/Items for Portion Control
swimbikerun replied to Namaste6's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I use the mini plates, bowls, spoons, forks, etc. that are sold as appetizer items in the Bed Bath & Beyond & like stores. -
So they had you taking all that calcium knowing your levels were that high? Did they test urine calcium levels? 24 hour levels? How about iCalcium levels? What were your blood calcium levels when you went to 4? https://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/pth/tab/test/ These are the people who write (or get it from the people who create the tests) lab guidelines. Your calcium was in normal range, so I'm missing pieces here as to why you were tested. That indicates a possible parathyroid problem, more so than calcium? Did they also check your phosphorus levels?
-
Did you check to see that everything else was the same? What about your Vitamin D levels?

Any Real Research on Post Op Guidelines?
swimbikerun replied to sbacoleman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The reason why aftercare is such an issue is because they've got their money. The money is in the surgery. After that, maintenance is not a big thing. Many of us, especially sleeves, need help and its not in the insurance to do anything for us.
