  1. I was pretty fit before the surgery. It made things a lot easier after. I did have a slight blip that day but otherwise, getting rid of food sure helped me. I was swimming and walking and biking before the surgery, doing light cardio and exercise machines. I had to stop all but the walking the first 2 weeks. The incision didn't heal well. It sure bugged me during the 10k I did 3 weeks and a day after surgery. My knees were hurting from all the walking I did. I did that much more but lost 27 pds the first month. It helped to go swimming 2 days from a month out.

Totally agree on all the postings. So very excited for you. May you have the same luck and fun I did in my first triathlon.

    How to start losing before

Did you try talking with your surgeon's office? How about google? There are simple ways: cutting out sodas, calorie drinks, less trips to fast food and replacing with veggies & fruit that are fresh and not fried. Have you started walking?
  4. How about a group or place or forum for those who are looking to compete? This can be in any sport. This means timed 5K's, marathons, half, triathlons, you name it. This would be a group for support for those entering and those who want more information and want to enter. Get involved! Get out there and keep weight off, get off old habits, get used to a more active life and see yourself as the athlete you can be or are.

    Bariatric athletes/triathletes

I did a 10K 3 weeks and a day post op. Slowest I ever did but I completed it. I've done road/running races, triathlons, but more recently I've stuck to swimming. Any way I can help I will. There are also names of bariatric athletes we should pass around.
  8. Under http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/991-fitness-exercise/, do you think we could get a specific forum for those who are looking to compete? Running, biking, swimming, weight lifting, whatever. Is that something that is doable?

    UNC or Duke for surgery?

Find out who knows how to deal with complications, difficult patients and ask to talk to people who have stayed with their after care for 3 years or longer. You want to know how they deal with problems. Any one can deal with things when they go well, its the capability to deal with issues that shows who is going to be in your corner, if things go wrong. I learned that lesson well from what happened to me and others.

    Healthy Meal Planning Ideas

I'm not as much big on cooking as I am salads. I go to different places with a salad bar so its always a mix up. I can get spinach or dark greens vs. iceberg. Beans of all types. Sometimes lots of fruit.

    The transition to vegetarianism…

@@JupiterinVirgo Nothing wrong with appreciating yourself as someone worth the best food intake.
  16. Have to agree. I only read medical journal, stuff from credible sources, sources that aren't crapped. Even then you can get a snooker or two. There are several lists I check that debunk garbage. I do not watch TV, movies, etc. and that is to fill my mind with good things that will help me. Go to your doc or to credible sources. Medical research isn't that hard to read. You can do that and it will help you with any concerns.
  17. I would agree to going back and talking with your surgeon. I don't agree with only reading good stuff. You will get yourself into bigger trouble by only looking at the good stuff and not taking a *BALANCED* look at the problems to learn from them to get something better for your outcome (learn from others) or protecting yourself or knowing what to expect from bumps in the road and how to minimize them as best you can. I am wondering if most of this just isn't the normal "oh my" and that settles down. There are few birds that have problems like I do, but some of mine were already there, the surgery excerabated it. You can't tell before hand but problems are workable or solveable with the right team. That is why the effort is made into picking the RIGHT team, not the one closest, or you "like" the surgeon.

    Prepping for a 5k

I was in pretty good condition before my surgery. 3 weeks and 1 day later, I did a 10K. It was the slowest done but I got it done. Yeah I did hurt/ache (and maybe a little more) but it was survivable. I was in pretty good condition before my surgery. 3 weeks and 1 day later, I did a 10K. Pre-Surgery Questions

I didnt but I was exercising pretty well before the surgery. I was in good condition, no diabetes or anything, so that helped. I was back in the saddle quickly. Did a 10K 3 weeks and a day after surgery and was swimming at the 1 month review.

What Are Your Fast Food Faves?

Faves or Raves? If I could post some jpegs I'd show you what I mean.
  24. The biggest issue is whether or not the surgeon's office would accept it or not at this point in time.

    Feeding tube after vsg

I am sorry. I was ok at first and things went downhill. Ended up with a PICC line. I survived it! Sometimes it takes a bit for your system to get back up.
