  1. Hi all,

My daughter's insurance company doesn't cover WLS. I'm just wondering what the range of cost for the sleeve is if you're self-pay. If you know the average for all-in, surgeon, hospital, anesthesiologist that would be great. I know it will vary widely, but we're just trying to get an idea of what to expect. She's not interested in traveling out of country. Thanks!

Dr. Mark Pleatman, great surgeon located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan charges $11,200 which includes a two-year follow up. He's fantastic!!!

  2. Hello all,

My son had his surgery on June 6th and doing very well! He had a one night stay in the hospital was up walking around just a few hours after surgery. He came home the next day and off pain meds. I must say he's followed doctors & nut's advice to the "T", and heeling well so far. He's still on liquids until he sees his doctor tomorrow. He's had no problem getting his Protein, Water and Vitamins in each day. He's down almost 40 lbs. so far!

This site has been such a great help with the comments & advice sharing. I can't thank you all enough! We got more info here regarding pre & post VSG than anywhere else. Also, kudos and thanks to his surgeon, Dr. Mark Pleatman, he did an amazing job!

I'm next, getting my authorizations & appointments lined up.

Wishing you all the very best!!!

  3. Yes I remember you and your son..you both sat behind me at class...I'm glsd it was at st joesephs to..I heard alot of bad things sbout doctors hospital of michigan...when is your and son surgery?

His is coming up next week, and I'm in the process of getting a pre-authorization and looking forward to getting this over in mid August. Most of everything I need is done, with the exception of pysc eval. Please do keep in touch and let me know how you are coming along. Best always! :)

  4. Oh and no drain bag! He thought I would need one since my surgery was a revision from the lap band, but it went better than even Dr Pleatman expected :) he's definitely the right dr to go to for this. I couldn't be happier :)

That's great! I'm happy your doing so well, and very glad to know Dr. Pleatman is all that you expected and more. :D Please keep in touch and let me know how your coming along. Best always! :)

  5. Yes its a nice hospital..were you and son at dr pleatmans office for the nutrition class on may 18?

Yes, we were both there. His surgery got moved back, so glad it did. Another young lady who was also there had her surgery last week at the "Doctors Hospital" which she said was awful. Her husband could not get her out of there fast enough. I didn't get any details other than the fact that it was bad. I'm very happy that we will be at St. Joseph's.

Pls. Keep me posted on your progress, best always!

  6. Hello Tarabby & Malq, I hope your surgery went well, waiting to hear about your recovery. I really hope it was easy and breezy for you.

I am also going through Dr. Pleatman at St. Joseph's. Did either of you have a drain bag? I'm reading and hearing about it and not sure if everyone goes home with it.

Wishing you a speedy and successful recovery! :)

  7. Wow, very inspirational! I'm loving thIs! So happy to hear from everyone and to know all are doing so great!

I'm just starting my process now, but my son is already scheduled for his very soon. Can't wait till I have a date set for myself. My insurance does cover the procedure; although, I will be responsible for a co-pay. Also, I don't think I'll have to do much more than just a psych visit, everything else has been done and my doctor can forward that documentation and submit for pre-authorization soon.

You all have had great success, I hope I have the same. Looking forward to hearing from more 50+ VSG's. Thank you for the site link where all are hanging out! I'll be checking it out soon.

  8. Can't believe how this thread turned into a lecture, sorry I even asked about smoking! I thought this was an informative and supporting site, but clearly it's not.

Thank you to all those who answered my question regarding smoking, as this was initially directed to smokers only. As to those (non-smokers) who enjoy lecturing other smokers, find another thread to lecture on.

    Have a nice day:)

  9. Yes I smoke and I am 7 weeks out. Dr said not to smoke the first 21 days. Yes I am aware of the consequences. Its personal choice.

I'm a smoker too and want to know more about it. Doctor wants me to stop at least 2 weeks pre-op, it's hard but I'm going to at least give it a try. I don't understand why they will not perform surgery on smokers. They do it all the time on people who have to have some kind of surgery in hospitals.

Did you have any complications due to smoking? We're you still smoking before and after surgery? Thanks!

  10. If you look at my blog post' date=' all about the bougie sizes are explained, and the size of your stomach. I even have a link to a bariatric test to show what your capacity is post op. It is under the size of your new stomach. There are videos too to show how liquids pass through an actual sleeve, and a sleeve right after surgery and one a few years post op.[/quote']

HI KULITA, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE INFO ON THIS, COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE ME THE LINKS TO THE BARIATRIC TEST & YOUR BLOG POSTS? ALL SOUNDS VERY INTERESTING? I BELIEVE OUR SURGEON USES A 32, BUT WILL CERTAINLY ASK NEXT VISIT. THANKS!

  11. I wenth with Thomas Sonnastien at Riverside for mine. Thought he was an awesome doctor' date=' fantatic bedside manor. I had a few complications after the surgery that werent necessarily related to the sleeve, so i had a pretty long recovery time (Gout, infections, etc)

I lost about 50 pounds from the first until the last day of april. after that i actually put a pound back on. not sure how that happened since i cant be taking in more than 500 calories a day. Oh well. Still have mild nausea and i can only eat a few bites at the most. How is your progress going? when was your surgery.[/quote']

Thank God your doing better! That's an awesome weight loss - good for you!

My son is scheduled for next week and he's lost so far only 15 lbs, he should be at 20-25, but it's been very slow lose for him. He was a huge soda drinker, and has stopped pop & smoking now for 3 weeks, I'm very proud of his accomplishment & dedication so far. He is although very nervous of going under and having to stay on liquids, no chewing for a month or two. Did you also have some negative thoughts before surgery?

I appreciate any comments and your pre-op experiences you can share with us. Thanks!

  12. Good to know, and I'm glad you found the right doctor and that your comfortable with it. Will you be traveling for your surgery, how long will your stay be?

It is my son who is having the surgery and I have been on this site readings all I can about the surgery and Dr. Pleatman. His surgery is scheduled for next week, May 16th, he is a self-pay, and extremely nervous about the whole thing, especially the part of waking up after the surgery. His Pre-op diet is 2 weeks and so far he's lost 15lbs. Doctor wants him to lose 20-25 lbs, don't know if he can make that mark by next week - weight lose is very slow & he's so frustrated already. But he's sticking it out and doing the best he can - I'm so proud of him. God bless you all!!!
