    Personal trainer?

Definitely not too early. Your trainer will assess your level of fitness and help you meet your goals. I'd go for it!

Why do women have to be so competitive?

I once posted a joke about "skinny b*****s" on FB. I was stopped by an older coworker in the hall who told me she has anorexia and has developed osteoporosis because of it. She said, "It's not always easy to be a skinny b***h." Because we are human, we often judge ourselves based on others. I am constantly trying everyday to remember that I haven't walked in others' shoes, and I don't know their struggles. Trying to stop feeling sorry for myself!
  3. And remember, sugar free doesn't mean carb free. An important distinction for diabetics.
  4. The TMI part of your post made me think about Celiac (gluten intolerance). I was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago, and I NEVER EVER thought I would have it--I am a carb. addict, after all. Maybe the next time you are getting blood work done, you could ask them to check that for you too. It can cause weight gain/retention, for those of us "lucky" enough to have weight issues.

    My Rare Complication

Wow. An amazing story. So glad that it did not end tragically and that you fought for yourself! What measures can be taken to penalize the unbelievably horrible hospitals/doctors that misdiagnosed you?

    Coffee and hot chocolate

All right, i am convinced! I just went online and ordered the mint hot chocolate and the cappuccino. I am hoping to find a new morning drink ritual (and kick this caffeine habit) before surgery and my pre-op diet. Thanks all!

    My Story

    Best wishes!
  8. I am pre-surgery, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt! But I remember my NUT saying eat for 15 -20 minutes, and no longer, otherwise it might become "grazing". I am wondering if others have heard this? Also, I've been told that walking every day is the best exercise for post-surgery. I have an elliptical machine that I park in front of the TV! Works for me! Good luck! Amy

Not about surgery but cant help it

Congratulations! That's a pretty big deal! And as far as your jeans purchase goes, I have bought some Seven for all Mankind jeans and have my eyes on some others. (All on eBay, of course!) Can't wait to be able to fit into them!
  10. Finished all my pre-op appointments in June, met with the surgeon, scheduled surgery for July 31, then found out I had AFib. I spent the rest of July and August dealing with my heart instead of my belly. Now that is taken care of, so I have another couple of bariatric center appointments next week, and then another scheduled appointment with the surgeon. Planning/hoping for mid-December so I'll have 2 weeks off for recovery before I have to go back to work. Wish me luck! ( I need it!) Amy
  11. Ms. Skinniness~ Did you use the 5:2 diet to get over plateaus? DId you change your exercise on those 2 "fasting" days? You are so close to your goal! Just hoping for some tips to your success. Thanks! Amy
  12. I have Anthem BCBS (educator in ME). I also have 100% coverage. It didn't take long for approval, but my surgeon's office gets that info. and begins the approval process for its patients immediately, so by the time I was done with all the classes and pre-op. check-ups, I was all set. Good luck! I am hoping for a mid-Dec. surgery date too.
  13. Agreed--try at least 1200 calories. I know this sounds counter-productive, but maybe slow down the workouts for a while (30 min. per day instead of 90) to see if that helps. (Especially if 1200 calories is difficult for you.)

    Need encouragement

Is it mandatory for all of you to weigh yourself every week? I know myself too well, and I fear if I do that and see a stall, I will feel discouraged and upset. I plan to ask my NUT if I can just weigh in once a month at the center instead. I figure in the meantime I can just judge my progress by how I feel and how my clothes fit. At least, that's my hope.

    Cant poop!

I just added benefiber and flax seeds to my Amazon cart. I forgot it was recommended by my NUT program. Thanks for the reminder!

    Help

It does sound like hypoglycemia to me. Try 4 oz. of juice. (15 g. carbs) It may help. At this point, non-diabetics' bodies are very used to insulin resistance (therefore your body is probably producing too much insulin). It may take a little while for your body to adjust. It's worth a shot!

    Pre-Op Diet

I think it depends on your surgeon's version of the diet. I could have 1 piece of fruit, 1 yogurt, 3 protein shakes and 2 small meals (3 oz. meat with non-starch veggies), so I didn't find it that hard, but I know a lot of people are on liquids only, and I'm not sure how well I'd do on that!
  18. I am starting to be more and more thankful for having celiac. When people eat gluten in front of me--bread, crackers, donuts, pizza, pasta, I am thankful that I am not even tempted. Never. The pain of gluten is just not worth it. This week I am making a conscious effort NOT to buy the gluten-free versions of these foods, which are often laden in even more calories. SO the challenge is still there for me, but I am sure I'd weigh a hell of a lot more if I never developed Celiac.

    Need help 4 week out

Wondering about your blood sugar levels. Low levels can cause fatigue, confusion, sweating, shakiness, headaches, etc. I am diabetic, so I know the signs, but I am assuming for many people who aren't diabetic, but have been insulin-resistent due to weight, your body is used to pumping out large doses of insuin. Have you tried 4 oz. or more of juice? 4oz. has about 15 g. of carbs, and may be what you need. Give it a shot if you can. good luck! Amy

    Coffee and hot chocolate

Good question. I know my NUT said I'd be able to drink coffee after I heal, but I never thought about sugar-free hot chocolate. (Maybe with a little chocolate protein powder?) I bet that would be fine.

weight loss and exercise, not necessarily a partnership?

SleevahDiva~ I appreciate your insight. I too was an exercise/nutrition maniac and remained obese for years. I hope to get the sleeve in Dec., so I know it will be an adjustment to actually lose while I am doing less stressful exercise. It will be nice to see the results of actual weight loss for once!

Returning to the gym after a prolonged illness

I have been planning to get back into my 1 hr. long kettlebell class with no weights to start. (Down from a 15 pound bell) I had some health issues too, and haven't even been sleeved yet, but I feel like it's time to get back into workout mode. SLOWLY.
